Specific references will be made to the cinematic portrayal of female boxers and wrestlers in Bollywood to argue that female boxers and wrestlers are portrayed as ‘masculine’. However, the sportswoman’s assertion of her femininity in a space exclusively occupied by men leads to ‘gender trouble’. To enunciate this argument two biopics, Mary Kom (2014) and Dangal (2016), will be analyzed. It would be observed that when a female boxer/wrestler tries to reinforce her identity, she is either subjected to criticism or faces failure. However, the argument that sportswomen are termed as ‘masculine’ does not necessarily imply that female athletes aren’t objects of the male gaze.

  • Religious, Caste, Gender Inequalities and the Making of Akhāṛās
Religious, Caste, Gender Inequalities and the Making of Akhāṛās (Wrestling Gymnasiums) as a Social Space in North India REKHA YADAV Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences Jawaharlal Nehru University Abstract Religion, caste and gender are the fundamental axes of social inequality in India. These three categories can be defined in Bourdieuan terms as “structuralist constructivism,” which establishes notions of social categories and dynamics of power relation in social spaces through a symbolic system organised on the basis of “logic of difference.” The akhāṛā (wrestling gymnasium), a social and spatial congregation organised for the practice of a specific Indian martial art of wrestling popularly known as khusti, is one such symbolic social space. Despite having a shared “moral universe” whose attitudes, practices, and orientations overlap significantly, akhāṛās are beset with tendencies of social divisions that manifest themselves along religious, caste and gender lines. Most akhāṛās have a strong Hindu element in both their membership and their symbols. The sanctity of the akhāṛās heavily relies on the Hindu notions of “purity” and “pollution.” The notion of akhāṛās has also been shaped with the articulation of concepts like brahmacharya (abstinence), masculinity and physical prowess. The strength invigorated in akhāṛās through wrestling epitomises “virility” and “ideal masculinity,” qualities ascribed to men. These notions reinforce the exclusion of women and low castes from akhāṛās. However, “massage,” “dangals” (wrestling bouts) and “inter-dining” practised among wrestlers in akhāṛās act as an agency for transcending the bounds of caste hierarchy based on “purity” and “pollution.” Secondly, the last decades of the twentieth century saw female wrestlers from north India turning gender equations upside down by entering the “male-sacred” space of akhāṛās and taking part in this supposedly “all-male” sport of wrestling.

  • Glocalization of Place, Body and Narrative in Dangal: Analyzing the Blockbuster Phenomenon in Popular Hindi Cinema Chanchal Phalswal
1 Glocalization of Place, Body and Narrative in Dangal: Analyzing the Blockbuster Phenomenon in Popular Hindi Cinema Chanchal Phalswal Abstract: The study of popular culture has deservedly gained predominance in the domain of cultural studies. There is a snowballing recognition of the force that popular culture exerts through popular literature, cinema, and social media on a majority of people around the world, their day-to-day lives, opinions, and decision making processes, while also being an indicator of the same. Like all cultural forces, popular culture is dynamic and forever evolving. This change can often be recorded in the change in popular art forms like cinema and literature. In the domain of popular Hindi cinema, such a change can be noticed in the change in the composition of the ‘blockbuster’ film in the 21st century.i For a film to be qualified as a ‘blockbuster’, the conditions of being ‘popular’ and ‘financially successful’ have to be met. The blockbuster film in Indian cinema has been discussed at length by academicians as a chiefly reductive and formulaic film concoction, often being specifically attributed to its epicenter in the Bollywood film industry situated in Mumbai.ii Yet, in the 21st century Indian cinema, a new phenomenon is raising its head across the horizon, making its thunderous presence felt on the blockbuster charts. This phenomenon which plays out both globally and locally, and socio-critically and commercially, is born of a hybridity that has changed the very chemistry of what comprises ‘Popular Indian cinema in the 21st century’. This article aims to study this ‘blockbuster phenomenon’ through a detailed analysis of the film Dangal(2016), a film that achieved record-breaking commercial success and critical appreciation, both locally and globally, while balancing popular entertainment with socio- critical responsibility, thereby retaining a unique sense of hybridism.

Auranagabad, MS, India Email : [email protected] Abstract In Dangal, the dialogue like ―tum jo bolegi ham wo sab karenge, bas hame is pailwani se bacha le‖ shows a tremendous psychological pressure of a father upon daughters and a male-dominated society. The dialogue like ―sal bhar ke liye bhul ja ki tumari koi maa hai‖ shows patriarchal hegemony and socio-cultural status of a woman who got stuck within the four walls, Another dialogue ―aaj se tum dono pehelwani ki zindagi jiyo‖ show gender equity, the dialogue ―rukna nahi hai‖ demonstrate male domination. The famous song ―bapu sehad ke liye, tu to hanikarak hai; ham pe thodi daya karo, ham to nanha balak hai‖ show patriarchal hegemony in this film. But the film rises above all such criticism and proves itself to be the best in terms of generating gender sensitizations and equity. Different perspectives reaching the core of the film can interpret it thoroughly. It is a real story about women‘s wrestling and consequences thereafter in India in a socio-cultural context. This film demonstrates the man who is maddened by his male ego with stubborn temperament and gladdened by victory.
