Steers to £1315 Heifers to £1140 Supply short and demand stronger than ever. A packed ring of buyers ensured all classes of stock were keenly sought after, with well fleshed animals in particular selling at premium price levels. A pair of well grown 25 month Simmental steers the property of EH Bragg & Son of Clyst St George realised the top price on the day of £1315. Other quality sorts close, with a matching pair of 27 month Charolais’ bullocks from Bill Hobbs of Moretonhampstead to £1295 apiece, while his 29 month South Devon made £1255 and Limousin heifers to £1140. A super run of 33 well-bred cattle from Rodney & Steven Squire of Ashreigney saw their best 24 month Charolais steers sell readily to £1165 with others to £1120, 21 month Limousin steers to £1095 and similar aged Blues to the same price, also 14 month Charolais steers to £860. Blue heifers from the same consignors sold in groups and realised £955 (x3), £920 (x4) and £865 (x3). A further entry of strong cattle from John Searle of Hollacombe created keen interest with his best 21 month Blue steers to £1215 (x4), Devons to £1095, well fed Blue heifers off the same holding saw groups of 2, 3 & 2 make £1080, £1055 & £1040 respectively and Aberdeen Angus’ to £1080. David Hawkins of Awliscombe sold his usual forward sorts with 27 month Blue steers to £1150 and 29 month South Devon’s to £1190. 24 month Blue steers from David Drew of Lapford sold well at £1145 (x3) and £1105, while Russell Retter of Cotleigh sold his 22 month Simmental & Angus steers to £1120 and slightly younger Herefords to £1060. A run of 21 quality bred Angus and Welsh Black steers from Courtney & Philip Heard of Meldon all around 14 months sold in groups at £980, £910, £905 etc. and a smart entry of yearling Charolais steers from Trevor & Martine Snell of Sidmouth returned £955 & £900 while their 21 month Charolais heifers sold to £1030. A group of seven well-bred 14 month Limousin bullocks from Simon Jervis of Ideford made £920 apiece. 131 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford 07789 980203 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A cracking entry of well over a hundred saw youngstock no dearer with a show of mainly dairy bred sorts which lacked any really outstanding suckler sorts. On saying that, £650 was achieved for a pair of super yearling Blue cross steers from Roger Adams of Cullompton with a trio of Angus steer stirks of a similar age to £590 and a mixed pen of five Limousin & Blue heifers reaching £535, again from Roger. A single young Hereford steer saw £600 for Keith Vincent, Grampound whilst a pair of very young (5m) shapely Blue steers fetched £580 apiece for Peter Jones of Bratton Clovelly and a group of three saw £570 a head for Phillip & Caroline Cox of Lifton. Limousin steers (7m) from Karen Pengelly, Blackawton rose to £560 and neat Angus Steer calves (7m) attained £500 for Andrew Taylor of Exford. Blue females from Andrew Dayment of Blackawton topped at £490 as a bunch of four with similar comments saw £460 for Phillip & Caroline Cox. Limousin heifers realised £470 for a pair from Karen Pengelly and more young sorts (5m) of that breed looked dear at £450 for a pen of six from Peter Jones. 122 CALVES – 10.15AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A super entry of calves saw quality throughout CALVES - 10.15 am which sold to an improved trade on the week! Top of the day was £370 for a group of seven weaned CALVES Bulls Heifers Aberdeen Angus calves from Messrs GP & J Gibbins Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE of Clyst Hydon. British Blue calves sold to £365 for British Blue 12 365 273 7 280 236 Keith & Jane Hulbert of Honiton who sold others to £310. Limousin bulls to £295 for Malcolm Shorthorn 1 50 50 Harris of Kingsbridge. Younger Aberdeen Angus bulls a super trade to £285, £275 & £270 for Andrew Parker of Totnes. Hereford bulls to £265 for Derek Burrough of Yarcombe. Heifers topped at £300 for two weaned Aberdeen Angus heifers from Messrs GP & J Gibbins who sold other Angus heifers at £200 (x7). British Blue heifers to £280 for Keith & Jane Hulbert (x3) and Limousin heifers to £265 for Kathryn Starr of Dunkeswell with others to £230 & £225 for Graham Kittow of Cullompton. 122 DAIRY – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Mark Bromell 07966 430001 A cracking entry of Cows and heifers forward for the first sale at Exeter Livestock Centre in 2017 saw a flying trade! A packed ring of buyers saw many farmers from all over the South West competing hard to secure fresh milk! Top of the day was £2000 for “Dartview Steffan Rosa 61” a heifer by Lynbrook Steffan from Messrs JJ Palfrey & Sons of Dartmouth, the same vendors sold another heifer at £1920. Other Holstein Heifers sold to £1720 "Chettiscombe Twist Quickstep 5” by Cogent Twist from Ian & Caroline Tapp of Tiverton who also sold another heifer at £1650, £1700 was achieved for the best of smart consignment from Keith & Jane Hulbert of Honiton who continue to disperse their “Janke” herd and a smart Heifer from David Snell & Family of Cullompton sold well at £1650 whilst her heifer calf made £130. British Friesian heifers sold exceptionally well to £1850 for Richard Harvey of Axminster who is dispersing his herd as they calve, others made £1700 and £1500. Holstein cows topped at £1820 for an outstanding fourth calver “Janke Penman Polly” by Oakroyal Penman from Keith & Jane Hulbert. The same vendor sold other second calvers to £1650 and two fourth calvers to £1550 & £1520! A cracking consignment of cows from Messrs GP & J Gibbins of Cullompton met a super trade and topped at £1750 for “Shethena Regal Julia” a second calver yielding 43Kgs by Moorshard Regal, the same vendor sold others to £1700, £1680, £1650 & £1620. British Friesian cows sold to £1400 for a fourth calver from Richard Harvey. An outstanding consignment of Pedigree Jerseys from the famous “Bluegrass” herd of Barry, Jenny & Claire Daw of Hertfordshire lit the ring alight when they came through and flew to £2000 for a smart second calver “Bluegrass Grandprixs Auburn VG86” a second calver by Rapid bay Grand prix and also at £2000 was “Bluegrass Excitations Flower VG85” a second calver by Bridon Excitation backed with 6 generations of VG & EX dams. The same vendor sold other second calvers to £1750 & £1600 and their consignment averaged £1837! Jersey Heifers topped at £1500 for “Sowden Timekeeper Miranda 3” by Potterswalls Timekeeper from Malcolm, Anne & Ian Huxtable of Crediton who sold others to £1100 and a second calver at £1000. Holstein In Calf Heifer sold to £1100 for Robert Page of West Sussex whilst “Hilltown” bred Ayrshire In Calf Heifers sold to £900 for John Vooght of Dunsford. Friesian yearling heifers sold to £410 for David Snell & Family and £400 x 3 for Ken & Cathie Cottey of Whimple. A British Friesian bull sold at £1100 for Messrs Ansdell Farms Ltd of Barnstaple. 1552 SHEEP - 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 12 ORPHAN LAMBS Still a big crowd of buyers and on-lookers but trade was less than this month’s previous sales and more on par with last year. Top price came from Mark Brown of Uplowman with a stronger lamb at £22, other young lambs at £20 for both Ivor & Rene Alexander of Tiverton and Richard Smaridge of East Allington who sold another at £18, a price matched by Brian Palfrey of Stoodleigh with three. Average £15.50. 1385 STORE HOGGS Fewer about were perhaps a shade easier, particularly the stronger and better end amidst uncertain prime returns. Medium and small hoggs just as dear as last week’s flyer with an abundance of purchasers confident in the March – May hogg trade. Top price of £73 & £69.50 went to John Canham of Hatherleigh for nice Suffolk crosses, £71.50 for both John Tucker & Sons of Dittisham with Texel x Mules and David & Linda Pellow of Sourton with Suffolk x Mules whilst a further five vendors reached £70. Being John Bond of East Allington, Paul Vanstone of Bratton Clovelly and Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell, while both Peter Jones of Bratton Clovelly and Graham Parker of Burrington sold their best two pens at £70 & £69.50. Also at £69.50 were two pens from John May of Bideford and no less than 11 vendors sold pens at £69. As stated medium hoggs very much in demand and more often than not mid to late £60’s while nicely bred long keep hoggs are creeping up towards the £60 mark.
