Obviously all of Springsteens many hits couldnt fit in one book but it does contain a good selection across the board of his many albums such as Born in the USA, Born to Run, Thunder Road and Glory Days to name a few. Theyre such amazing songs. We would definitely recommend the book to one who is interested in getting started in playing Springsteen. Journal of Academic Perspectives Religion, Politics, and Public Discourse: Bruce Springsteen and the Public Church of Roll Frederick L. Downing, Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Valdosta State University and Jonathan W. Downing, Co-Director, Screaming Shih-Tzu Productions Abstract The thesis of this paper is that Bruce Springsteen’s art participates in a musical public square in which the outsider can come up close and overhear a dialogue that has been going on for centuries. Following the work of Robert Detweiler on religion and public life, this paper starts from the premise that the bard’s music, like literature, creates a type of public square or a form of public discourse where urgent matters of human survival, like the nature and nurture of a just state, are expressed, a call for social justice can be heard, and faith and hope for the future can be assimilated. Using the theory of Martin Marty on religion and civic life, the paper further describes Springsteen’s work as the creation of a “public church” beyond sectarian demand which is open to all and approximates, in his language, a true “land of hopes and dreams.” The paper uses the theory of Walter Brueggemann on the ancient church idea to demonstrate the nature and dimension of Springsteen’s “public church.” Using Brueggemann’s theory, Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball album is shown to have both a prophetic and priestly function. As a writer and performer, Springsteen demonstrates on this album and on the Wrecking Ball tour that he not only speaks truth to power, but attempts to create a sense of alternative vision and alternative community to the unjust status quo.

  • PHILADELPHIA in the 1850'S As Described by British Travelers
PHILADELPHIA IN THE 1850'S As Described by British Travelers By IVAN D. STEEN* D`URING the 1850's, Philadelphia, like most American cities, grew considerably in population. On the eve of the Civil War the Quaker City could boast of having well over half a million inhabitants, making it second only to New York among the cities of the United States.' But what kind of city was Phila- delphia, and what could it offer to its residents and its visitors? Some of the answers may be found in the accounts written by British visitors to the city during this decade. Travelers, then as now, were concerned about their accom- modations at the various stops in their tours. When visiting a large American city Englishmen usually took up residence at one of the spacious and magnificent hotels which they found there. These havens for weary travelers were more than just resting places; they were actually among the most interesting sights on the tour. American hotels, in their size and lavishness, and in the many services they offered to their guests, were completely un- like the type of hostelries that Englishmen had encountered in their own country. In Philadelphia the Girard House, a good-looking sandstone building, located on fashionable Chestnut Street, was the pre- ferred hotel among British visitors. It was here that William Makepeace Thackeray chose to reside while in Philadelphia in 1853.2 Most travelers thought highly of the Girard House. B. W. A. Sleigh, in 1852, called it "one of the most elegant estab- lishmernts in the States," and the next year William Chambers referred to it as being "of the first class."3 Similar comments were *Dr.

  • Meet Me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the Protest Song Tradition on the Recent Work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012)
Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the protest song tradition on the recent work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012) Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Dr. Debora Van Durme fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Nederlands- Engels” by Michiel Vaernewyck May 2014 Word of thanks The completion of this master dissertation would not have been possible without the help of several people that have accompanied me on this road. First of all, thank you to my loving parents for their support throughout the years. While my father encouraged me to listen to an obscure, dusty vinyl record called The River, he as well as my mother taught me the love for literature and music. Thanks for encouraging me to express myself through writing and my own music, which is a gift that money just cannot buy. Secondly, thanks to my great friends of the past few years at Ghent University, although they frequently – but not unfairly – questioned my profound passion for Bruce Springsteen. Also, thank you to my supervisor dr. Debora Van Durme who provided detailed and useful feedback to this dissertation and who had the faith to endorse this thesis topic. I hope faith will be rewarded. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who proofread sections of this paper and I hope that they will also be inspired by what words and music can do. As always, much love to Helena, number one Croatian Bruce fan. Thanks to Phantom Dan and the Big Man, for inspiring me over and over again.

  • Vision Zero Action Plan 2025 Lorem Ipsum November 2020
Vision Zero Action Plan 2025 Lorem ipsum November 2020 City of Philadelphia 1 Letter from the Mayor James F. Kenney Fellow Philadelphians, Over the past three years, the Vision Zero Task Force has brought state and local government officials side-by-side with community and advocacy groups to work towards a goal of zero traffic deaths. Building on that progress, the Task Force has outlined Philadelphia’s path forward to Vision Zero in this next Five-Year Action Plan. These efforts build on the establishment of the Office of Complete Streets, as well as the work of my colleagues in City Council and the State Legislature, who have championed efforts towards making the streets safer. Our accomplishments this past three years include the installation of automated speed cameras on Roosevelt Boulevard, the addition of over 37 miles of new and upgraded bike lanes, including over 10 miles of protected bike lanes, and over 58 miles of improved streets. This year, a combination of the global pandemic, an escalating economic recession, and unrest tied to systemic racism and police brutality have all taken a toll on Philadelphia. We have also seen a dramatic increase in traffic deaths. The month of July 2020 was the worst single month during my administration as 24 Philadelphians lost their lives in crashes. These deaths are unacceptable and preventable. When I took office in 2016, I pledged my commitment to making Philadelphia streets safe for everyone, regardless of age, physical ability, or choice of transportation. The path to achieving Vision Zero is not accomplished easily and Zero traffic deaths by 2030.

  • Podcast #44- a Psychologist Analyzes Bruce Springsteen I Want to Offer up Some Thoughts About the Psychology of Bruce
1 Podcast #44- A Psychologist Analyzes Bruce Springsteen I want to offer up some thoughts about the psychology of Bruce Springsteen today. Now, Springsteen’s psyche isn’t the easiest thing for me to analyze, I must admit. The reason is that he is also my musical hero. I’ve been a fan since 1969 when he ruled the musical scene on the Jersey Shore where I grew up. In fact, he lived in my neighborhood and played at my high school prom. So, I love his music and, well, frankly, I idealize him as a performer and songwriter. Just as shrinks aren’t supposed to treat anyone in their own family, so too it feels awkward wearing my therapist hat trying to understand Springsteen’s psyche. It’s hard to be objective. Fortunately, I’m greatly aided by his highly revealing and soul-searching autobiography, Born to Run, and, secondarily by his intimate storytelling in his one-man Broadway show, Springsteen on Broadway. Springsteen’s ruthless honesty and clear-eyed introspection no doubt derive, in part, from the fact that he has been in psychotherapy for over 30 years, much of it with 2 psychiatrist, Wayne Myers—therapeutic work that he says lay at the heart of the autobiography. For someone so prominent to talk about his mental illness—in Springsteen’s case it was a profound and long standing depression--has made it safe for others to do the same. Springsteen’s depression found its roots in a childhood filled with neglect, emotional cruelty, and unstable attachments. His father, Doug, was an explosive alcoholic tormented by persecutory and paranoid thoughts.

The stresses of climate catastrophe and the corresponding global rise in authoritarianism has made fascism a more present and pressing menace than it has been in decades with no clear end in sight. There has also been a corresponding uptick and interest in fighting against fascism and a new wave of antifascists have emerged from all different corners in an inspiring upswell of action and energy alongside growing worldwide unrest and revolt.

Others, by every measure, have bounty way beyond their needs—more money, more food, more cars, more clothes, more education, more services, more freedom, more opportunity, more of every- thing. Yet, surprisingly, in that world of over abundance, too, the conversation is dominated by what they don’t have and what they want to get. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an event that jumpstarted the gay-rights revolution, a movement with strong Philadelphia roots. The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection joins cities across the world by marking the milestone with a jam-packed weekend of Pride events in mid-June, including the annual Philly Dyke March, a floating dance party on the Delaware River and the weekend’s main event, the PrideDay LGBT Parade and Festival, debuting a Philadelphia Pioneers On The Road To Stonewall float. The extended summer season sees a slew of international stars coming through town for live stage shows. Glam rocker Adam Lambert joins Queen for a night of music in South Philly, and lesbian comedian Hannah Gadsby hits Philly on her first U.S. tour. Philadelphia also hosts the nation’s largest Trans Wellness Conference and Stonewall @ 50, a thoughtful exhibition of works by LGBTQ artists that recounts the Stonewall Riots and its impact a half century later.
