Currently with nearly six month of audio and 5,000 tracks, organized into 97 Lots, and totaling over 200 GB, the main archive on Archive.org is an awesome permanent record, but a bit difficult to navigate. So, I set out to create a new, compact version of the archive, containing the exact same set of audio. The result is Pocket Overnightscape. Pocket Overnightscape uses a new “patch” format, which is 12 to 24 hours of audio in a single file, with 20 hours being the target length. It uses the lo-fi MP3 audio format, so each patch is around 200 MB. The set is organized into 8 channels, each channel containing between 21 and 41 patches, for a total of 225 patches. So, a listener need only choose a channel, and then choose a patch from that channel to listen to. Patches are similar in length to a longer audiobook. Each track has a computer voice intro and outro, to orient the listener by sound alone. Most audio players support a function of keeping track of where you last left off listening, to make it easier to listen to a patch over time. Pocket Overnightscape is 42.4 GB, and can easily fit on a 64 GB flash drive, which currently sell at retail for around $30. Like a book or a movie, Pocket Overnightscape is a static work. Any audio additions will be done as supplements or a completely new edition. It was a huge personal effort, taking a massive amount of time and energy, but in the end, I think it was worth it. Pocket Overnightscape can be downloaded from Archive.org (see below for details), or from pocket.overnightscape.com. Note: The name “Pocket Overnightscape” was previously used for the Lo-fi Archive - but now it is exclusively being used for this release. The code name for this project during development was “Overnightscape Tavern” LISTEN TO POCKET OVERNIGHTSCAPE You can listen to and download Pocket Overnightscape at: http://pocket.overnightscape.com Additionally, you can listen and download at Archive.org: http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_1_The_Overnightscape http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_2_The_Rampler http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_3_The_Frank_Nora_Show http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_4_The_Overnightscape_Returns http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_5_The_Underground http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_6_PQ_Ribber http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_7_Ramplers_1 http://archive.org/details/Pocket_Overnightscape_Channel_8_Ramplers_2 Also, for more information you can always visit: The Overnightscape: http://theovernightscape.com The Overnightscape Underground: http://onsug.com EXPLORING POCKET OVERNIGHTSCAPE Pocket Overnightscape is an amazing little universe of audio. ABOUT THE OVERNIGHTSCAPE Since 2003, Frank Nora has been broadcasting his unique brand of lively, messy, stream-of-consciousness monologues to a small (but dedicated) Internet listening audience. Each show is a pleasantly insane ramble through the mysteries and pleasures of life, pop culture, current events, weirdness, technology, New York City, food, beverages, conspiracy theories, nostalgia, and oh so much more. Come join the fun - it’s time for more people to tune in and discover The Overnightscape! The Overnightscape Underground transmission archive collects all of Frank’s shows so far (The Overnightscape, The Rampler, The Frank Nora Show, etc.) - along with shows by Frank’s many radio friends on The Overnightscape Underground. Exploring the archive is an adventure unto itself! The fun continues at TheOvernightscape.com and onsug.com, with many new shows each week - all Creative Commons licensed. So, Onsug Lot 98 (March 2013) and beyond will represent all the audio that is not included in Pocket Overnightscape. Future editions of Pocket Overnightscape are possible, but this current edition is complete and will not be updated. ENJOY!
