HOVERFLY NUMBER 41 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2006 Dipterists Forum ISSN 1358-5029 As a new season begins, no doubt we are all hoping for a more productive recording year than we have had in the last three or so. Despite the frustration of recent seasons it is clear that national and international study of hoverflies is in good health, as witnessed by the success of the Leiden symposium and the Recording Scheme’s report (though the conundrum of the decline in UK records of difficult species is mystifying). New readers may wonder why the list of literature references from page 15 onwards covers publications for the year 2000 only. The reason for this is that for several issues nobody was available to compile these lists. Roger Morris kindly agreed to take on this task and to catch up for the missing years. Each newsletter for the present will include a list covering one complete year of the backlog, and since there are two newsletters per year the backlog will gradually be eliminated. Once again I thank all contributors and I welcome articles for future newsletters; these may be sent as email attachments, typed hard copy, manuscript or even dictated by phone, if you wish. Please do not forget the “Interesting Recent Records” feature, which is rather sparse in this issue. Hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) provide crucial ecological services and are increasingly used as bioindicators in environ- mental assessment studies. Information is available for a wide range of life history traits at the species level for most Syrphidae but little is recorded about the environmental requirements of forest hoverflies at the stand scale. The aim of this study was to explore whether the structural heterogeneity of a stand influences species richness or abundance of hoverflies in a montane beech-fir forest. We used the catches of Malaise traps set in 2004 and 2007 in three stands in the French Pyrenees, selected to represent a wide range of structural heterogeneity in terms of their vertical structure, tree diversity, deadwood and tree-microhabitats. -

Based on field observations hints are given for detection of egg-laying females of the genus Cheilosia Meigen. The results of a number of observations are reported, including some previously unknown host relationships. Oviposition occurs on the larval host plant. Therefore observing egg-laying females is a powerful method to improve knowledge of the spectrum of potential larval hosts and habitat. Zusammenfassung Auf der Grundlage von Freiland-Beobachtungen werden Hinweise zum charak teristischen Verhalten eiablagebereiter Weibchen der Gattung Cheilosia Meigen ge geben. Einige Ergebnisse von teilweise bisher unbekannten Wirtsbeziehungen wer den mitgeteilt. Nach gegenwärtigem Kenntnisstand erfolgt die Eiablage an die Wirts pflanze der Larve. Daher bietet das Beobachten von Weibchen bei der Eiablage eine gute Möglichkeit, die Kenntnisse um das Wirtspflanzenspektrum und das Habitat der Larven zu erweitern. Introduction Cheilosia Meigen, 1822 is one of the largest genera of the Syrphidae worldwide. About 300 Palaearctic species are listed by Peck (1988). The larvae are endophyto- phagous in stems, roots or leaves of herbs, more rarely under the bark of conifers, or they live in fungal fruiting bodies. Concerning the fauna of western Europe, data on the larval biology of almost 40 species are available (Stuke 1995a). -

We report the first records to Denmark of the hoverfly Cheilosia fasciata Schiner & Eg- ger, 1853. The larvae live as leaf miners on Allium ursinum L. (ramsons). The mines are conspicuous and easily recorded. We first found larvae and mines in a forest on the island of Falster in south-eastern Denmark in 2014. Search for larvae and adults during the 2015 season across Denmark – assisted by numerous volunteers – resulted in a total of four inhabited forest sites, all on Falster and within a distance of 10 km. Thus, the species is most likely a recent immigrant from northern Germany. It will probably continue to spread in the years to come. This paper summarises distribution in Poland and provides notes on the biology of three species of the subgenus Pollinocheila Barkalov, 2002 of the genus Cheilosia Meigen, 1822, whose larvae specialize in leaf mining. Alpine species Cheilosia rhodiolae Schmid, 2000 is provided for the first time from Poland and Central Europe based on specimens collected in the highest parts of the Tatra Mountains in the year 1956. Thirteen new localities of C. semifasciata Becker, 1894, and thirteen of C. fasciata Schiner et Egger, 1853 in Poland are provided and drawn on the distribution maps. During the revision of old data, two records published previously as “semifasciata” from Poland and Bulgaria have been corrected. Authors confirm stable populations of C. semifasciata in the urban areas of the city of Krakow, which supports observations of its synanthropic behavior in recent years. These data, although rather unevenly spread in space and time, will alloui to compile a first survey of the faunistics of the Syrphidae of this région. An up-to-date check-list names 31A species, including some of doubtful status. About 25 species are feared to be (virtually) extinct or seriously threatened, at least in part of their range here. Two others, Helophilus hybridus and Platycheirus ovalis, have probably arrived here only in recent times. The occurrence of each species has been put in map; a number of characteristic distri¬ bution patterns can be recognised. More than 50 % of the species were found to be rare and/or quite local; some may only be occasional strays. -

HOVERFLY NUMBER 39 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2005 Dipterists Forum ISSN 1358-5029 In their opening article in Hoverfly Newsletter No. 38, Stuart Ball and Roger Morris commented on the dearth of hoverflies (and other Diptera) during 2004, probably as a result of the previous year’s drought, a phenomenon of which most of us were only too well aware. However, not long after the newsletter had been sent for publication, the media began to feature reports of a plague of Episyrphus balteatus as what appears to have been an especially large migration from the continent was taking place. My own experience was that, round about the time of this upsurge in E. balteatus, numbers for other species also improved, though not for very long, and the end of the season was as disappointing as the early part. The same article predicted that, for the same reason, 2005 might also be a poor year for hoverflies; however let us hope for some improvement. I express my gratitude to all contributors to the current and previous newsletters. Please keep the contributions flowing. HOVERFLY NUMBER 38 NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2004 ISSN 1358-5029 Firstly I must apologise to forum members who are receiving the previous issue of the newsletter (no. 37) at the same time as this one rather than six months ago; it should have been published with the Bulletin of the Dipterists Forum No. 57 in the spring, but as it was explained on page 4 of that bulletin, there were good reasons why the deadlines for copy had to be adhered to strictly, and I failed to get the newsletter to the bulletin editor by his deadline. Some members were given hard copies shortly afterwards, and those whose email addresses are known to the Forum have, I understand, received it electronically, but there are still a number who will be seeing it for the first time. In order to avoid a repetition of this situation I shall in future be similarly strict with the deadlines for newsletter copy; to be certain of having your notes included in the next newsletter, please ensure that they reach me by the deadline specified at the end of the editorial section; entries that are a few days late may still be included, but I cannot guarantee that they will not have to be held over until the subsequent newsletter. If any reader still has not had a copy of Newsletter No. 37 please contact me. I should like to thank Roger Morris for taking on the task of providing a list of hoverfly literature.
