Jan 04, Estelle rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels-manga-bdclassics. Just great, old fun! I enjoyed every story and laughed out loud many times. And forget Zorro, Sergeant Garcia is the true star! Aug 28, Sebastien rated it liked it Shelves: comics. The art by Alex Toth: brilliant. Beautiful compositions and drawing style. I'm amazed this was done in I thinkthe style is very much ahead of its time. That said, the stories? To be fair, the stories target a young demographic, but still, I've read plenty of things geared for younger audience that were written with great skill and interesting cleverness. And I do think the stories could have benefitted from more "bite" but being The art by Alex Toth: brilliant. And I do think the stories could have benefitted from more "bite" but being a Disney property at the time the depiction of violence and zippo romance make sense. A few of the stories longer ones were a bit more interesting but overall meh. And story-wise I do think it can still possibly be entertaining for younger readers. Apr Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth, Michael P. Alex Toth was one Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth the finest cartoonists of our time. His art on the Zorro character is near legendary in graphic storytelling circles. This book shows how fine his work is; reading the stories is another matter. If the writing were as fine as the art, this would be a 5 star book. This was kind of fun to read since I have never taken in the classic Zorro story. But it was much slower than the material I normally read and hard to stay engaged with. Apr 30, Michael rated it really liked it Shelves: westernsgraphic-novels. Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth artwork is amazing, of course. It's thrilling and deceptively simple. The Complete Classic Adventures of Zorro is worth having just to flip through and marvel over the drawings. The stories are good, too, but they're mostly adaptations of episodes from the Disney TV series in the '50s. That's not a problem for readers unfamiliar with the show, but fans of it may wish for something new. There are some short tales included that weren't adapted from TV and they ended up being Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth favorites. Oct 13, Dan Blackley rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. These are the adventures Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth Zorro in the comics. Il fumetto riprende le avventure della serie tv Disney su Zorro. Che dire Jan 07, Travis rated it really liked it Shelves: comic- booksclassicsmanly-literature. Done during the Disney TV show, these comic stories are very light weight, but very pretty to look at. Fun, pulp- swashbuckling reads, which work best when they stop talking and have Zorro running, jumping and fighting. Mar 10, Aaron rated it really liked it. Mostly dull to mundane advneture stories, but the art is fantastic and the storytelling skills of Toth shine through as always. Recommended for study for cartoonists, or for very light reading. This was a wonderful trip down memory lane. I was excited to find the issue -- the exact Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth -- that started my year-journey of loving, learning, teaching Spanish. Sep 21, Sara Kreps rated it really liked it Shelves: reading-challenge. Pretty good. A little spoiled by the author's introduction; I wouldn't read that until you finish the collection. Jun 28, Kevin rated it it was Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth Recommends it for: Zorro Fans. Shelves: zorro. One of the best collection of comic book Zorro stories available. It is my only hope that Dynamite retains this realistic storytelling with their Zorro lineup this fall. The Complete Classic Adventures of Zorro by Alex Toth Alex Toth has one of the most distinctive art and Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth styles in American comics, but his talent is often overlooked because he is not closely associated with a famous title or character. InEclipse Comics pulled these stories together in two graphic novel editions so Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth contemporary readers could see for themselves what the fuss was about. The Zorro books later reprinted in a single volume feature the swashbuckling vigilante of Old California, known for carving his initial into his enemies with a flourish of his rapier. A staple of old Western pulps in the s and 30s, Zorro experienced a revival in the late 50s and early 60s thanks to a lighthearted television show produced by Walt Disney. By this point in his career, Toth was simply a master of the comics page. Every angle, every spot of black, every background detail included or omitted has a compositional and storytelling purpose. With architectural precision, Toth renders even the most predictable script into a series of exciting and unexpected shots, playing light against shadow, figure against ground, and one portion of the page against the other Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth perfect pace and balance. His Zorro bears a striking resemblance to Errol Flynn an altogether appropriate model which remains Zorro: The Complete Alex Toth panel after panel. In Image Comics reprinted the two-volume collection previously printed by Dark Horse. For this black and white reprint edition, Toth did the tone indications for the dotscreen overlays that replaced the original color in addition to two covers and a tip-in plate. Jump to issue: 1.

  • The Graphic Novel and the Age of Transition: a Survey and Analysis
The Graphic Novel and the Age of Transition: A Survey and Analysis STEPHEN E. TABACHNICK University of Memphis OWING TO A LARGE NUMBER of excellent adaptations, it is now possible to read and to teach a good deal ot the Transition period litera- ture with the aid of graphic, or comic book, novels. The graphic novei is an extended comic book, written by adults for adults, which treats important content in a serious artistic way and makes use of high- quality paper and production techniques not available to the creators of the Sunday comics and traditional comic books. This flourishing new genre can be traced to Belgian artist Frans Masereel's wordless wood- cut novel. Passionate Journey (1919), but the form really took off in the 1960s and 1970s when creators in a number of countries began to employ both words and pictures. Despite the fictional implication of graphic "novel," the genre does not limit itself to fiction and includes numerous works of autobiography, biography, travel, history, reportage and even poetry, including a brilliant parody of T. S. Eliot's Waste Land by Martin Rowson (New York: Harper and Row, 1990) which perfectly captures the spirit of the original. However, most of the adaptations of 1880-1920 British literature that have been published to date (and of which I am aware) have been limited to fiction, and because of space considerations, only some of them can be examined bere. In addition to works now in print, I will include a few out-of-print graphic novel adap- tations of 1880-1920 literature hecause they are particularly interest- ing and hopefully may return to print one day, since graphic novels, like traditional comics, go in and out of print with alarming frequency.
