“My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

Written and produced by the Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, the song became the Temptations' first U.S. number-one single, and is today their signature song. Robinson's inspiration for writing this song was his wife, Miracles member Claudette Rogers Robinson. The song was included on the Temptations 1965 album The Temptations Sing Smokey.

RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY NEW BRUNSWICK AN INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT REDFIELD FOR THE RUTGERS ORAL HISTORY ARCHIVES INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY MOLLY GRAHAM EAST BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY FEBRUARY 19, 2015 TRANSCRIPT BY JESSE BRADDELL Molly Graham: This is an interview with Robert Redfield, our second session. The interview is taking place on 102 Ryder’s Lane in East Brunswick. The date is February 19, 2015 and the interviewer is Molly Graham. If you could talk me about the years between finishing at NYU and forming the Redfield Agency. Robert Redfield: Even before that, I was so involved with some of the clubs, doing a lot of lounge work. MG: How did you start working in these lounges? How would you make the connections? RR: This was even before the Stone Pony opened in Asbury Park. I was pretty well connected because I had always been connected in the entertainment business. A lot of musicians, they got to know me and they’d come to me because I knew all the clubs. I got to know the club owners as well. Every week, The Newark Star Ledger would have two full pages advertising all the lounges, clubs and entertainment. I didn’t trust anybody else to do what I would do. I was more or less confined to the clubs, the lounges, the local groups because it consumed most of my time. But the groups I worked with would go all over--Las Vegas, Canada, and all over the country. But when the drinking and driving laws became more strict, this business seemed to stop overnight.

  • Arena Free Concert Line-Up Announced
Arena free concert line‐up announced Following the success of Seaside Soul in 2016 the soul theme returns to Rhyl Events Arena on Sunday 18th August for the annual Free Arena Concert . This year’s event will feature live entertainment from Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, The Edwin Starr Band ‘The Team’ featuring Angelo Starr , Precious Wilson, Midnight Soul Supremes and guest DJ’s Jimmy James started his musical career, composing and singing, at the early age of 16. In 1964 he was asked to join as the lead singer with one of Jamaica’s leading bands ‘The Vagabonds’ and together they left Jamaica for what was to be a six month tour of the UK. In 1966 The Vagabonds recorded their now legendary album, ‘The New Religion’ which really established the outfit as the most sought after working band in the UK. Jimmy’s recording of Neil Diamond’s ‘Red Red wine’ in 1969, taken from the Vagabonds’ second album ‘Open up your soul’, gave them their first commercial hit record. In 1970 he signed up to Biddu of the Subbidu Music Corporation and together they produced hits such as ‘Now is the Time’ and the timeless ‘I’ll Go Where The Music Takes Me’. Angelo Starr is an American singer, musician and record producer. He is also the younger brother of the late soul singer Edwin Starr. The Team was Edwin Starr’s touring band and upon the death of his brother in 2003, he felt that he had reached an impasse and didn’t know if he still wanted to be involved with music Angelo eventually stepped in to front his brother’s touring band, The Team.

Hodges plays the memorable organ stabs that punctuate "Take Me to the River" and the sweeping swells that bring together "Love and Happiness." He plays soul music like he's in church, and he plays church music from his soul. That's him on Little Milton hits (e.g., "Walking the Backstreets and Crying") and on all the classic Ann Peebles and Syl Johnson songs. He once traded licks with Stevie Wonder on an unreleased Al Green track. "I have no conflicts about secular music," Rev. Hodges says. "I put me in that work. I'm doing what God has given me the ability to do: 'Whatsoever you do, if you put me first, I am with you.' So I know God is with me when I play that music." In the 1960s, Hodges moved from the stage of Beale Street's Flamingo Club to the road band for O.V.

  • The Temptations
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 6, 2009 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS THE TEMPTATIONS LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 Richmond, BC – For more than forty years, the Temptations have prospered propelling popular music with a series of smash hits and sold out performances throughout the world. The history of the Temptations is the history of contemporary pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine – that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy – the Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early 60’s. The original line-up was Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. It wasn’t until 1964 that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed including “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “Cloud Nine” and “I Can’t Get Next to You.” Their hits continued throughout the 70’s … many featuring Dennis Edwards who had replaced Ruffin … and included “Psychedelic Shack,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” Other stellar singers – Richard Street and Ali Ollie- Woodson – joined adding their luster to the group’s fame. No matter the change in personnel, the group always remained true to the Temptations tradition. During the 80’s, they prevailed with smashes such as “Treat Her Like a Lady.” Then in the 90’s, there was yet another Temptations explosion with several acclaimed albums and a two-part miniseries that aired on NBC in 1998 which chronicled the group’s history.
