Used as a noun in English, it designates someone who as easily emanates cachet as pre- tension, of the sort often associated with style items or fashion habits imported from France. As an adjective, however, “cinéphile” describes a state of mind and an emotion that, one the whole, has been seductive to a happy few while proving beneficial to film culture in general. The term “cinephilia,” finally, re- verberates with nostalgia and dedication, with longings and discrimination, and it evokes, at least to my generation, more than a passion for going to the movies, and only a little less than an entire attitude toward life. -

14 DARK VISIONS OF JAPANESE FILM NOIR Suzuki Seijun’s Branded to Kill (1967) Daisuke Miyao I think that motion pictures should create events by themselves . They should not restrict themselves to merely recreating what has actually happened . Once such events created on the screen occur in reality, motion pictures begin to have a relationship with the society for the first time. (Suzuki Seijun quoted in Ueno 1991: 114) Suzuki Seijun’s 1967 film Branded to Kill (Koroshi no rakuin – hereafter Branded) – the story of a contract killer being dismissed by a gangster organization – created a controversial real life incident when Nikkatsu, one of Japan’s oldest film studios, dismissed Suzuki, then one if its contract directors, ten months after its release. On April 25, 1968, Suzuki was directing the television series Aisai-kun konbanwa: aru ketto¯ [Good Evening, Mr Devoted Husband: A Duel]. He received a telephone call from the secretary of Hori Kyu¯saku, the president of Nikkatsu, and was told that the studio would not pay his salary for April. Just like that, Suzuki Seijun was fired from Nikkatsu. To be sure, Branded had not been a financial and critical success. The film journal Kinema Junpo¯ reported that the release of Branded on a double feature with A Bug That Eats Flowers (Hana wo ku¯ mushi, Nishimura Sho¯goro¯, 1967) ‘resulted in less than 2,000 viewers at Asakusa and Shinjuku and about 500 in Yu¯rakucho¯ on the second day’ (quoted in Ueno 1986: 336). Indeed, Yamatoya Atsushi (1994: 38), one of Branded’s screenwriters, recalls that the Nikkatsu theater in Shinjuku where the film was originally screened was more or less empty on its opening day. -

CONTENT Jean-Luc Godard, one of modern cinema's most influential artists, is equally important in the development of video. JEAN-LUC GODARD: SON+IMAGE traces the relationship between Godard's films and videos since 1974, from the films Ici et ailleurs (1974) and Numero Deux (1975) to episodes from his video series Histoire(s) du Cinema (1989) and the film Nouvelle Vague (1990). Godard's work is as visually and verbally dense with meaning during this period as it was in his revolutionary films of the 1960s. Using deconstruction and reassemblage in works such as Puissance de la Parole (video, 1988) and Allemagne annee 90 neuf zero (film, 1991), Godard invests the sound/moving image with a fresh aesthetic that is at once mysterious and resonant. Film highlights of the series include Sauve qui peut (la vie) (1979), First Name: Carmen (1983), Hail Mary (1985), Soigne ta droite (1987), and King Lear (1987), among others. Also in the exhibition are Scenario du film Passion (1982), the video essay about the making of the film Passion (1982), which is also included, and the videos he created in collaboration with Anne-Marie Mieville, Soft and Hard (1986) and the series made for television, Six fois deux/Sur et sous la communication (1976). -

In an era that largely avoids over-arching narratives, what are the grounds for, and aims of, setting the aesthetic, economic or technological histories of a given national cinema alongside those of other nations? In this essay, Prof. Richard Peña (Columbia University) examines the experiences of three distinct national cinemas̶those of France, Japan and Brazil̶that each witnessed the emer- gence of new movements within their cinemas that challenged both the aesthetic direction and industrial formats of their existing film traditions. For each national cinema, three essential factors for these “new move” move- ments are discussed: (1) a sense of crisis in the then-existing structure of relationships within their established film industries; (2) the presence of a new generation of film artists aware of both classic and international trends in cinema which sought to challenge the dominant aesthetic practices of each national cinema; and (3) the erup- tion of some social political events that marked not only turning points in each nation’s history but which often set an older generation then in power against a defiant opposition led by the young. Thus, despite the important and real differences among nations as different as France, Japan and Brazil, one can find structural similarities related to both the causes and consequences of their respective cinematic new waves. Like waves, academic approaches to various dis- personal media archives resembling small ciné- ciplines seem to have a certain tidal structure: mathèques, the idea of creating new histories based on sometimes an approach is “in,” fashionable, and com- linkages between works previously thought to have monly used or cited, while soon after that same little or no connection indeed becomes tempting. -

58 PRINT 70.3 FALL 2016 PRINTMAG.COM 59 HAT DID YOU DO during the Legibility Wars?” asked one of my more inquisitive design history students. “Well, it wasn’t actually a war,” I said, recalling the period during the mid-’80s through the mid- to late-’90s when there were stark divisions “Wbetween new and old design generations—the young anti- Modernists, and the established followers of Modernism. “It was rather a skirmish between a bunch of young designers, like your age now, who were called New Wave, Postmodern, Swiss Punk, whatever, and believed it necessary to reject the status quo for something freer and more contemporary. Doing that meant criticizing old-guard designers, who believed design should be simple—clean on tight grids and Helveticized.” “Do you mean bland?” he quizzed further. “Maybe some of it was bland!” I conceded. “But it was more like a new generation was feeling its oats and it was inevitable.” New technology was making unprecedented options possible. Aesthetic standards were changing because young designers wanted to try everything, while the older, especially the devout Modern ones, believed everything had already been tried. “I read that Massimo Vignelli called a lot of the new digital and retro stuff ‘garbage,’” he said. “What did you say or do about it back then?” “I was more or less on the Modernist side and wrote about it in a 1993 Eye magazine essay called ‘Cult of the Ugly.’” I wasn’t against illegibility per se, just the stuff that seemed to be done badly. I justified biased distinctions not between beauty and ugly, but between good ugly and bad ugly, or what was done with an experimental rationale and with merely style and fashion as the motive.
