A variety of other funding sources are also contributing to projects within the Werribee Plains region, such as the Western Treatment Plant upgrade, the Werribee Technology Precinct strategy, and the restoration of the Werribee River.

In August 2002, the Premier of Victoria launched the Victorian WERRIBEE PLAINS CONSULTATIVE PANEL Government’s Vision for Werribee Plains. 9 5 The Werribee Plains region

The Werribee Plains region extends from the Maribyrnong River, west to Geelong and north to Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury. It includes the local government areas of Wyndham and Melton and parts of the surrounding municipalities of Greater Geelong, Moorabool, Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay.

13 7 Sustainable water management

Sustainable water management recognises all uses of our water resources – agricultural, industrial, residential, recreational and environmental – and the need to balance the competing demands for a limited water supply. Recycled water offers an additional resource that can relieve pressure on existing supplies and provide opportunities for future development.

In June 2004, the Victorian Government released the White Paper Our Water Our Future which sets out comprehensive long-term approach for the sustainable management of Victoria’s limited water resources.

24 Action Plan 2004 Werribee Technology Precinct Strategy The Werribee Technology Precinct is a leading centre for agri-food research and development. Current tenants include AgriFood Technology, the State Chemistry Laboratory, Victoria University, Food Sciences Australia, the Victorian Institute of Biotechnology, the Academy of Grain Technology, the Australian Starter Culture Research Institute, the Victorian Institute of Animal Science, the Melbourne University Veterinary School, CSIRO Animal Health Laboratories and the Gilbert Chandler Institute.

The government will commence a comprehensive strategy to develop the Werribee Technology Precinct as a world-class research and technology centre, specialising in agribusiness, animal biotechnology and environment technologies. The strategy will include governance arrangements, a program of infrastructure upgrades and a marketing and investment attraction plan.

City West Water is investigating the potential to service areas within the precinct with recycled water. It is anticipated that 270 megalitres per year of recycled water will initially be provided to the precinct by late 2005, with the view to increase this volume as new users come online.

The Office of Science and Technology within the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development will complete the strategy by early 2005.
