WASHINGTON | For Roger and Marguerite Sullivan of Washington, Christmas really is the most wonder- ful time of the year. Thanks to their travels throughout the world over the past 40 years — he for the World Bank, she for the State Department — the Catholic couple has collected 500 Nativity scenes. Every December, they spend a few days unpacking about 100 or so of the creches for display around their home. There is no doubt that visitors are captivated the moment they step inside the Spanish Renais- sance-style church with four crys- tal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling, visually stunning in- teriors and stained-glass windows telling Bible stories. One little-known fact about this gem is that it began as a mission church of St. Ann Parish in West Palm Beach. Jesuit Father Felix Clarkson, pastor, saw the need for a mission church to serve winter visitors and people working in the service industry at the hotels housing them. The territory was under the authority of the Diocese of St. Augustine back then, and the A beautiful rendition of the Crucifixion is displayed high above the The ceiling of St. Edward Church features hand-painted, hand-cast bishop was Bishop Patrick Barry. main altar at St. Edward Church in Palm Beach. pieces put in place one by one by skilled workers. Bishop Barry gave his consent for the establishment of St. Edward Mission and a groundbreaking for the church was held Easter 1926 on land purchased for $80,000. The construction of the $500,000 building took nine months and a dedication took place Feb. 13, 1927, with Bishop Barry. In 1941, St. Ed- ward Mission became a parish, standing on its own as the area’s population developed into a town with year-round residences. MIAMI’S NEWEST AUXILIARY ‘A bishop for the people’; a ‘servant of the Lord’ Peruvian-born Enrique Delgado ordained as Miami’s newest auxiliary bishop ANA RODRIGUEZ-SOTO of the Florida Catholic staff

Bishop Enrique Delgado’s ges- ture at his ordination ceremony — repeated also during his emotional remarks at the end — typified the humility and the attitude with which he assumes his new role.
