Douglas Yates (Interfaith Co-ordinator, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Interfaith Scotland): “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me”. “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” The Saviour knew what it was and what it felt like to be a refugee—he was one. As a child, Jesus’s family fled to Egypt to escape the murderous King Herod. At various points in his ministry, Jesus found himself threatened and his life placed in danger. Ultimately he would lay down his life for each one of us. Perhaps, then, it is all the more remarkable that he repeatedly taught us to love one another and to love our neighbour. Truly, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction” and to “look to the poor and the needy, and administer to their relief that they shall not suffer”. There are highly charged arguments in Government and across society regarding what should be done to assist refugees. My remarks today are not intended in any way to form part of that discussion, but rather to invite us to focus on the people who have been driven from their homes and their countries. In “The Book of Mormon” we read of the people of Alma who, “in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had not been nourished ... therefore they were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need.” Being a refugee might be a defining moment in the lives of those who are refugees, but being a 3 20 SEPTEMBER 2016 4 Topical Question Time Those are emotional words. They are joined by Ian McKee who is the Managing Director, GLM Chartered Building Surveyor and Past Chairman of Royal Incorporation of Chartered Surveyors, Scotland. Finalists will be announced in the near future and the awards will be presented by John Beattie on 10 November at The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. Membership levels in Scotland are at record levels and there is a high interest in Scotland from contractors wanting to join the NFRC. We had a Regional Committee meeting in September which received a presentation from Matthew Fry from Independent Roof Training. IRT is a member of the Roofing Industry Alliance and provides training specifically for the roofing industry. IRT has a number of training grants which NFRC members can benefit from to offset the cost of training. [redacted] wishes to express her frustration and disappointment with the current Scottish Government policies for Higher Education that are limiting access to Scottish university places for young people. In her son's case this has resulted in no offers from university in his final year at school. To add to this initial disappointment, she has discovered that she has been misled by UCAS who report on their website that applicants can apply for 'extra' and then through 'clearing' should their initial applications be rejected. The options that appear as 'extra' are not available to Scottish applicants and Scottish universities do not offer 'clearing' for Scottish students. Had her son been aware of this he would have submitted a wider array of applications and perhaps had an improved chance of success. Her son achieved 8 A's at National 5 level, with hard work. In S5 he had a serious sports injury that resulted in hospitalisation, surgery and a significant recovery period. He decided to defer his exams on advice from his teachers. He has subsequently applied to university with no higher results from his 6th and final year at school and is currently taking his higher exams for the first time this year.

    MAY 2020 A Letter from the President Dear all, I hope you are doing well during these strange and ever-changing times. On Shavuot we commemorate receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai. Despite having to continue to observe social distancing, we can still enjoy this holiday and make it meaningful by joining one of the many online events being organised, having a Zoom – and hopefully enjoying some cheesecake! I am proud to see so many organisations in our community host online events and work tirelessly to ensure we can still feel connected to our community and Jewish traditions. This continues to be a difficult time with many people struggling with different challenges, from financial, to mental health and loneliness. We hope that people continue to reach out and ask for help. If you or anyone that you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can point you in the right direction for help. As I mentioned in the Jewish Telegraph last week, I realise that not everyone is online and able to connect to Zoom events or social media. We are working on reaching as many people in our community as possible, but if you have any ideas on how to widen our reach, or know of anyone who hasn’t been able to connect, please give us a call or drop us an email. Lastly, I’d like to thank our professional staff for all their hard work on this, our first newsletter, and I hope you will find it enjoyable and helpful at a time of uncertainty.

    AGENDA ITEM 9 Paper: AC.2020.7.6 MEETING: 13 AUGUST 2020 REPORT BY: SECRETARY TO THE COMMISSION UPDATE REPORT Introduction 1. The purpose of this report is to provide an update to the Commission on significant recent activity relating to local government, focussing particularly on the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. 2. The regular Controller of Audit report to the Commission which updates the Commission on his activity complements this report. The Commission’s Financial Audit and Assurance Committee also receives a more detailed update on issues relating to local government. This report also complements the weekly briefing provided by Audit Scotland’s Communication Team made available on the extranet site, which provides more detailed news coverage in certain areas. 3. The information featured is also available on the Accounts Commission member portal. Hyperlinks are provided in the electronic version of this report for ease of reference. Commission business Publications 4. Audit Scotland collects media coverage on all the reports published by the Accounts Commission. Audit Scotland also provides a weekly summary of the key media stories regarding local government. Both are available through Audit Scotland SharePoint, on the Accounts Commission Members’ Extranet. The usual Appendix on download statistics for published reports will be reintroduced in a future report. 5. On 23 June the Commission published the latest annual overview of local government in Scotland. The report was compiled before the pandemic, but the Commission suggests its findings remain relevant as Covid-19 “multiplies” the challenges of local government. Scottish Government funding to councils was found to have reduced in real terms by 3.3% between 2013-14 and 2020-21.
