According to the blogger, the cars are safe, patient, and they drive like your grandma. The cars are, in the estimation of many of the folks in Mountain View, superior to human drivers, as they don’t allow themselves to get annoyed with traffic on the road. They are especially safe for pedestrians, patiently waiting at cross-walks, providing plenty of needed space. The autonomous vehicles make lane changes slowly and follow the rules of the road flawlessly. While this is great news for pedestrians, it’s not such great news for drivers behind it-- the slow speed and cautiousness at lights en- sures that drivers who throw caution to the wind when they start the ignition will never want to be stuck behind a Google car. However, cutting off a Google car is apparently not difficult-- simply accelerate as usual and cut off the vehicle. Often the Google car will actually slow down to facilitate the task. Since the cars maintain a definite speed rigorously, it’s very easy to get frustrated with the vehicles as a fellow driver. The recent success of autonomous vehicles is leading to the question of whether one day autonomous vehicles will eventually replace user-driven cars altogether. Admittedly, Google’s driving record is far better than most, however is it possible that one day people won’t be able to drive their own cars? It’s a possibility. And with 100 Google cars already hitting the streets of Mountain View in regular driving conditions, the future may in fact be far, far closer than we assume. VERDICT: With Google’s safe, autonomous cars hitting California roads now, a nationwide roll-out may not be far be- hind. 4 | Apps World Mag | June 2015 MICROSOFT: Free Windows 10 Upgrades from 29 July! The Move is Calculated to Attract Windows 7 Users Windows 10’s Home Edition, ready to be released later this summer, will be available as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users. The new operating system features a fully integrated Start Menu, where the button interface rests on the side of the menu. While those with valid Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 copies will be able to upgrade for free, the latest Windows is priced at $199 without an upgrade. The new operating system will be available on ma- chines for sale starting from July 29 and on smartphones later this year. Windows 10 Pro can be upgraded from the Home Edition if users feel that they need the larger features that come with Pro. The new Windows will throwback to the Aero Windows theme that Windows 7 had, while maintaining a number of other cosmetic features. One of the most interesting features under the hood is codenamed “Continuum”, which allows a user to move seamlessly from desktop to mobile or other device. A user could start a word processing document on their desktop, for example, and can continue working on their tablet or phone. Multiple overhauls have taken place in some of the more popular Windows apps. One example is in Windows’ auto- mated assistant, Cortana. The feature is now embedded into the Start Menu, capable of helping users with their device. Similarly, the music and video apps will have substantial upgrades, and the XBox app will have many new features such as game DVR. VERDICT: Windows 10 is a big upgrade for its users, and it makes sense that Microsoft is going to try to get as many users to migrate over to the new system quickly, especially for users who are still on Windows 7. Apps World Mag | June 2015 | 5 BUZZ GOOGLE PLAY: Upgrades its APK with Welcome Upgrades and Bug Fixes A Worthwhile Upgrade for Users of Android 4.0 and Above Users of Google Play who’ve upgraded to its new APK, Google Play 5.4.12, are in for a pleasant surprise. While primarily a maintenance upgrade (Google Play 5.3.5 and 5.3.6 were only released recently), it incorporates more elements of Google’s Material Design concept that was introduced in robust fashion with Android 5.0 Lolipop. While many of those changes were introduced in 5.3.5, the new update, currently only available from the Google Play store, furthers the general design elements and fixes a number of bugs. The newest versions of the Google Play APK’s have been largely focused on de-cluttering the user interface and making it easier and more intuitive to use. Material Design relies heavily on color-coding, and this is increasingly ob- vious in the way the Google Play store is organized. One major change is the change of bar color on the app, which now adjusts to the particular item in Google Play that the users look for. Another major change in the appearance of Google Play app is the action bar, which has becomes less prominent on the screen except while scrolling. Changes in the way listing cards are handled have also solved problems in the movie listings and information in landscape mode. These, and a variety of other minor changes, have made the Google Play app far easier to navigate and work with. To boot, a number of updates have been made for smooth ani- mations, thus creating a better overall experience. VERDICT: Since the coming of Android 5.0, many standard Google apps are changing and Google Play is no different, as the user experience continues to improve. Downloading the latest Google Play app from the Google Play store is a smart idea. 6 | Apps World Mag | June 2015 YOUTUBE: Discontinuing Support For Older iOS Devices and Smart TV’s If You Can’t Upgrade, You Might Not Be Able To YouTube Users of older iOS devices and Google devices discovered this week that the native YouTube Apps aren’t working. The reason for this is an upgrade to YouTube’s API, which has deprecated features that made the older YouTube Apps workable. Because of this, workarounds as well as upgrades are being suggested. For users with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, there is no real problem so long as your device has been upgraded to iOS 7, which will still have working native apps. Devices that have not been upgraded, however, will “break” YouTube, which will not work. Devices which have topped off with iOS 6, however, will have to work with YouTube’s mobile site through the Safari Browser.
