The RELICT HOMINOID INQUIRY 8:1-25 (2019) Research Article IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE ALMAS* Zhugdariyn Damdin EDITOR’S NOTE: Here is a translation of an abridged summary taken from an apparently substantial manuscript produced by Mongolian investigator Zhugdariyn Damdin, who conducted ethnographic and field research on the Mongolian almas over a period of several years (1962-1965). This was translated to Russian, arranged by the late Michael Trachtengerts, and posted on his webpage (alamas.ru). In his Afterword, Trachtengerts sheds some light on the manuscript’s provenience, while raising questions about its impact and ultimate fate. Jim Burgtorf arranged to have Trachtengerts’ on-line summary translated into English and recently brought it to my attention. I was unfamiliar with it but received further clarification from Igor Burtsev, to whom we are indebted for further historical context and editorial assistance. Burtsev came into possession of Damdin's book manuscript (in Mongolian, with photographs) in the 1970s, and had some excerpts translated into Russian. Later he conveyed the entire manuscript to Maya Bykova for translation into Russian. During 1976, Burtsev participated in an expedition to Mongolia, at which time he met Damdin. Preoccupied with other responsibilities and circumstances over the ensuing decades, Burtsev lost contact with Maya Bykova. She passed away in 1995, and the fate of her archives, including the Damdin manuscript is unknown. Therefore, we are all the more fortunate to be able to make available this early insight into the nature of an Asian relict hominoid – the Mongolian almas. For example, did anyone believe in the existence of Ethiopians before seeing any? Isn't anything seen for the first time astounding? How many things are thought possible only after they have been achieved?" (Pliny, Natural History of Animals, Vol. VII, 1) INTRODUCTION BERNARD HEUVELMANS Doctor in Zoological Sciences How did I come to study animals, and from the study of animals known to science, how did I go on to that of still undiscovered animals, and finally, more specifically to that of unknown humans? It's a long story. For me, everything started a long time ago, so long ago that I couldn't say exactly when. Of course it happened gradually. Actually – I have said this often – one is born a zoologist, one does not become one. However, for the discipline to which I finally ended up fully devoting myself, it's different: one becomes a cryptozoologist. Let's specify right now that while Cryptozoology is, etymologically, "the science of hidden animals", it is in practice the study and research of animal species whose existence, for lack of a specimen or of sufficient anatomical fragments, has not been officially recognized. I should clarify what I mean when I say "one is born a zoologist. Such a congenital vocation would imply some genetic process, such as that which leads to a lineage of musicians or mathematicians.

These included the five-volume BNMAU-yn shav’zh [In sects of the MPR] (1971-1977), BNMAU-yn khoit goviin tsol tal [Deserts and Plains of the Northern Gobi of the MPR] (1974), and BNMAU-yn oi [Forests of the MPR] (1978). This expedition also produced and published maps of the vegetation and soil of Mongol ia. The Joint expedition on history and culture carried out many aspects of the study of the Old and New Stone Age, and the Bronze Age and Iron Age on the territory of Mongolia. In 1978, Academician A.P. Okladnikov edited the single-subject publication entitled Arkheologiya i etnografiya Mongolii [Mongolian Archeology and Ethnogra phy].'' Some of the other Mongolian and Soviet scholars of the expedition also wrote books and other publications. The exchange of academic representatives between the two academies was es pecially significant for the far-reaching foundation courses of our academy, the planning and selection of critical decisions, and therefore the introduction into industry of scien tific leadership and gains, and the training ofskilled personnel to do this. In 1979, for example, each institute within our academy had links with between three and fifteen in stitutes of the USSR Academy of Sciences. This was a clear demonstration of the coop eration between the two academies. Over the course of twenty years 600 workers in the academy had done research at organizations ofthe USSR Academy of Sciences.

I also thank my advisor, Professor Gaby Bamana, who provided some much-needed guidance for this project. Historical Evidence for the Existence of Relict Hominoids 1:23-50

The RELICT HOMINOID INQUIRY 1:23-50 (2012) Essay HISTORICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF RELICT HOMINOIDS Dmitri Bayanov* International Center of Hominology, Moscow 121614, Russia ABSTRACT. Hominology is the study of evidence for the existence of wild bipedal primates, presumed to be relict hominoids or hominids. Investigation of the subject began simultaneously in Russia and America last century, beginning with the Himalayan expeditions in search of the yeti. The first international scientific organization that united academic and non-academic investigators was formed and functioned in Italy in the 1960s. Its Russian member was Dr. Boris Porshnev, founder of Russian hominology, whose unorthodox views regarding the origin of man and the nature of hominids are pointed out. Hominology is based on six main categories of evidence, of which two, pertaining to the historical aspect of the subject, are discussed in detail in this essay. They are the evidence of natural history, from Lucretius to Linnaeus, and the evidence of myth and folklore, from Babylonian mythos to folk proverbs and sayings in use today. The reinforcement of early natural historians’ descriptions by cultural literary traditions attests to the acceptance of wildmen, a.k.a demons, devils, goblins, as hair-covered creatures in human form. In the author’s view, present data testify that hominology deals with evidence of living pre-sapiens relict hominoids. Below are some of the most interesting "new species" discoveries that took place or were formally announced in 2013.
