Philip Oyewale 2 Abstract Marriage, as understood from the Christian, Nigerian Baptist Convention‟s, perspective, is a mutual relationship endorsed by holy matrimony between a consenting man and a woman. Similarly, within the Nigerian socio-cultural setting, particularly among the Yoruba, marriage is recognized and endorsed as sacred and accorded great priority. To the Yoruba, it signifies a crucial rite of passage, a transition to adulthood and immense responsibilities within the community. However, despite the sanctity and lofty views of marriage, a number of Diaspora Yoruba Christians couples living in the North West of England (NWE) are increasingly experiencing serious marital instability and conflict. This thesis, therefore, critically examines Yoruba couples „understanding of marriage and how their various contacts with social realities in the NWE impact upon spousal relations. Particular attention is paid to cross-cultural factors, power structures among the Yoruba and social structures that promote Yoruba women‟s empowerment in the NWE. The study employs semi-structured qualitative interviews. It notes that: (1) Yoruba couples, having been married in a traditional way and setting are intensely confronted with social realities in the NWE which often calls for a renegotiation of marital relations. (2) Issues of spousal power relations, male dominance and hierarchy, financial /resources management, identity crisis/social status and gender- role reversal are crucial factors that currently affect the level of marriage satisfaction among Yoruba Christian couples. However, in spite of the academic underpinnings of this work, the use of devotional language is justified given the religious commitment and background of the research 3 population. Against this backdrop, therefore, the relevance of the proposed marriage enhancement initiative, Prayer Intervention Programmes (PIP), as a viable approach for marital harmony, is significant. 4 Dedication I dedicate this dissertation to Mrs Abigail Oyewale (my stepmother), the first prophet of my life; and Ruth Oyewale (my wife), who believe in my vision and stands with me. 5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It will be impossible to list all the people whom God used in accomplishing his purpose for my life in writing this dissertation.     “YORUBA’S DON’T DO GENDER”: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF OYERONKE OYEWUMI’s The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourses By Bibi Bakare-Yusuf Discourses on Africa, especially those refracted through the prism of developmentalism, promote gender analysis as indispensable to the economic and political development of the African future. Conferences, books, policies, capital, energy and careers have been made in its name. Despite this, there has been very little interrogation of the concept in terms of its relevance and applicability to the African situation. Instead, gender functions as a given: it is taken to be a cross-cultural organising principle. Recently, some African scholars have begun to question the explanatory power of gender in African societies.1 This challenge came out of the desire to produce concepts grounded in African thought and everyday lived realities. These scholars hope that by focusing on an African episteme they will avoid any dependency on European theoretical paradigms and therefore eschew what Babalola Olabiyi Yai (1999) has called “dubious universals” and “intransitive discourses”. Some of the key questions that have been raised include: can gender, or indeed patriarchy, be applied to non- Euro-American cultures? Can we assume that social relations in all societies are organised around biological sex difference? Is the male body in African societies seen as normative and therefore a conduit for the exercise of power? Is the female body inherently subordinate to the male body? What are

Understanding these terms as they interrelate gives birth to this discourse. We hereby adopt the World Health Organization (WHO) operational definition of ‘sexuality’ also adopted by the Africa Regional Sexuality Resource Centre (ARSRC). It runs thus: Sexuality is a central aspect of being human throughout life and encompasses sex, gender, identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. Sexuality is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviours, practices, roles and relationships. While sexuality can include all of these dimensions, not all of them are always experienced or expressed. Sexuality is influenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, ethical, logical, historical 1 and religious and spiritual factors . The Yoruba culture, for the present purpose, can be defined as follows: The aggregate of the ways of life of the Yoruba-speaking peoples of southwestern Nigeria and their kiths and kins elsewhere in the world. It is a continuum beginning from their subsistence, communal, agrarian life of the pre-literate and pre-colonial times to the capitalist, individualistic, free- enterprise life of the literate, colonial and post-colonial, modern times. In other words, a continuum of the traditional and modern aspects of the Yoruba culture provides a true picture of this concept.

There are rural and urban cultures. However, arising from rapid urbanization and historic transformation of human social roots on a global scale, the predominantly rural cultures are being replaced by urban culture day by day. This article provides an explanation on the effects of the Yoruba culture on a houseform that dominated the traditional rural culture of a typical Yoruba settlement, using a Yoruba city of Ogbomoso on the south west zone of Nigeria, as a case study. Multi-habitation which is a concept and form of housing whereby residents live with multiple families and share living space together was common in the rural culture of the Yoruba people and has been transposed into urban culture in cities of developing countries, Nigeria inclusive. As a result of multi-habitation, rental accommodations are being provided for the large population in the rapidly expanding cities in the developing countries. A study of multi-habitation in Ogbomoso, Nigeria revealed that majority of multihabited houses in Ogbomoso (60.8%) were rooming houses. It also revealed that three (3 ) households living together under the same roof across the residential area (44.2%) was a common scene. The study further revealed that multihabited house is a type of single or multiple room occupancy where most washing, kitchen and toilet facilities are shared among residents.

Adekola* Abstract The north central Yorubaland homeland of the Igbomina Yoruba, in the modern Kwara State of Nigeria, is endowed with abundant natural and cultural resources. The cultural landscape of the area is indeed very rich. However, the vast majority of these significant elements of cultural heritage remain unexamined. In fact, most of these resources are hardly known. For about seven decades since the first and best known elements of cultural heritage in the area were unearthed in the town of Esie, we have yet to substantially expand the repertoire of knowledge concerning the cultural history of the region. For several decades, a number of scholars have decried the inadequacy of information on the ancient political, social, economic and religious structures that existed in this region (Aremu 1991, 2006; Folorunso, 2006; Obayemi, 1982; Onabajo, 1988, 1994; Pogoson, 1990; Aribidesi et al. 2005; Aleru, 2006). Yet, little research has been conducted to improve the situation. This article reports on the potential elements of natural and cultural heritage in the homeland of the Igbomina people, and of recent archaeological work undertaken by the authors within the region. Introduction Among the most prominent of known elements of cultural heritage in the homeland region of the Igbomina are 800 representational statues carved in steatite (or “soapstone”) found in the landscape surrounding the town of Esie in the modern Kwara State of Nigeria (Figs. 1-3). These figurines, ranging in size from 14 centimeters to over one meter in height, represent both men and women, often in positions seated on stools, kneeling, playing musical instruments, holding machetes, or with their hands placed upon their knees.

[email protected] Abstract This study seeks to examine what way of life distinctively defines who a Yoruba Muslim is. Is he one whose practice of Islam separates him from Yoruba cultural practices, or one whose Islam accommodates elements of indigenous tradition? Taking cognizance of the attitude of Islam to non-Islamic culture, this study aims at examining the role of indigenous culture in the formation of the Yoruba Muslim identity. Apart from the introductory section, the study is divided into four parts. The first examines cultural compatibility and harmony of identity traditions focusing on the institution of marriage. The second section deals with syncretic practices and the dilemma of the Yoruba Muslim in cultural identity formation. The third part examines inculturation of Islam among the Yorubas while the fourth part treats Islamic identity signifiers and Yoruba Muslim. The study concludes by stressing the need for correlates between the Islamic identity maker and the Yoruba Muslim behavioural pattern. Introduction The Yorùbá estimated to be about 28 million people according to the 2006 census unquestionably constitute one of the major Nigerian ethnic nationalities among whom Islam receives wide acceptance.1 They live in the country‟s southwest states of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo as well as the north central states of Kogi and Kwara. Outside Nigeria, the Yorùbá are found in Benin and Togo Republics.
