Voice Vote: Ayes Nays Page 2 October 9, 2017 Board of Education Brighton Area Schools Regular Meeting Monday, October 9, 2017 7:00 PM – BECC Minutes I. Call to Order President Burchfield called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. II. Pledge of Allegiance President Burchfield led the board in reciting the pledge of allegiance. III. Roll Call Members present: Andy Burchfield, Dave Chesney, Ken Stahl, Roger Myers John Conely, Bill Trombley and Alicia Reid. Also present: Superintendent Gray, Assistant Superintendents Gistinger and Surrey, staff, press, and visitors. IV. Approval of Agenda Motion: To approve the agenda as presented. Moved by: Chesney Supported by: Stahl Voice vote: 7 ayes. Motion carried. V. Call to the Public Tim Hoy addressed the board regarding the Steinway bid. Mr. Hoy provided information on a new Steinway versus a used one for consideration on purchasing one for the district. Sue Ellen Ikens asked the board to follow up on the Steinway information presented by Mr. Hoy. VI. Superintendent Report A. BHS teacher, Mrs. Holowicki and students Madeline Minnick and Abby Zielinski gave a presentation on how Patriot Week was recognized throughout the district. Superintendent Gray communicated Pledge of Allegiance posters will be going out to all buildings to be hung in every classroom. B. Student Representative - Izzy Glaub provided an update on behalf of The Brighton High School. 1 Page 3 October 9, 2017 VII. Board of Education Bulletins Treasurer Stahl, Trustee Reid and Dr. Chesney commented on the homecoming festivities and thanked all the students and staff for making this event a success. VIII. For Action A. Motion: To approve the minutes of September 25, 2017 as presented. Moved by: Chesney Supported by: Reid Voice vote: 6 ayes, 1 abstention – Burchfield. Motion carried. B. Motion: To appoint Trustee Stahl as the delegate and Trustee Reid as the alternate to represent the Brighton Board of Education at the 2017 MASB Delegate Assembly on Thursday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lansing Center. Moved by: Myers Supported by: Chesney Voice vote: 7 ayes. Motion carried. C. Motion: That the board accept the certified staff resignations of Lisa McKeeby and Caitlin VanCleve as presented. Moved by: Chesney Supported by: Reid Voice vote: 7 ayes. Motion carried. D. Motion: That the board approve the request for disposal of Photography developing equipment presented. Board Committee Reports Dr. Chesney announced the financial committee meeting will be held on October 20 and Trustee Conely announced the Livingston County Community Alliance (LCCA) meeting will be held on October 10. XII. Second Call to the Public There were no public comments offered. XIII. President Burchfield noted that the next regular meeting is scheduled for October 23, 2017. XIV. Rationale: Facts/Statistics: Per Board Policy 7230 – All gifts, grants, or bequests having a value of more than $1,000 shall be accepted by the Board. District Goal Addressed: X Communication Fiscal Integrity Student Achievement Motion Moved by: Supported by: To accept with appreciation the donation of $3,500.00 from the Ditto family and the donation of $6,000.00 from Buckley Jolley for service dog. Voice Vote: Ayes Nays Page 6 BRIGHTON AREA SCHOOLS Board of Education October 23, 2017 Report #17-173 For Action Subject: Steinway Bid Acceptance Recommendation: That the board approve the purchase of the Steinway Model L 1927 year for $25,000. Rationale: As this piano is going to be used in the practice room, this rebuilt Steinway has been determined to fit the needs of the school district. Facts/Statistics: This piano had an original value of $71,000 and a store price tag of $54,000. Voice Vote: Ayes Nays Page 7 Page 8 BRIGHTON AREA SCHOOLS Board of Education October 23, 2017 Report #17-174 For Action Subject: BHS Request for Overseas Trip to Central Europe Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board approve the Social Studies trip to Central Europe in June of 2019 as proposed by high school AP Social Studies teacher, Colleen Buchanan. Rationale: The 14-day “Treasures of Central Europe” trip will include visits to numerous historical and cultural sites so that students may experience firsthand lessons from AP World History and AP European History. Points of interest will include Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, and Heidelberg) Facts/Statistics: Destinations: Major Central European cities Students will travel during summer of 2019 The cost of the self-funded trip is $3,785.00 per student.     Germany and the Coming of the French Wars of Religion: Confession, Identity, and Transnational Relations Jonas A. M. van Tol Doctor of Philosophy University of York History February 2016 Abstract From its inception, the French Wars of Religion was a European phenomenon. The internationality of the conflict is most clearly illustrated by the Protestant princes who engaged militarily in France between 1567 and 1569. Due to the historiographical convention of approaching the French Wars of Religion as a national event, studied almost entirely separate from the history of the German Reformation, its transnational dimension has largely been ignored or misinterpreted. Using ten German Protestant princes as a case study, this thesis investigates the variety of factors that shaped German understandings of the French Wars of Religion and by extension German involvement in France. The princes’ rich and international network of correspondence together with the many German-language pamphlets about the Wars in France provide an insight into the ways in which the conflict was explained, debated, and interpreted. Applying a transnational interpretive framework, this thesis unravels the complex interplay between the personal, local, national, and international influences that together formed an individual’s understanding of the Wars of Religion. These interpretations were rooted in the longstanding personal and cultural connections between France and the Rhineland and strongly influenced by French diplomacy and propaganda. Moreover, they were conditioned by one’s precise position in a number of key religious debates, most notably the question of Lutheran-Reformed relations. These understandings changed as a result of a number pivotal European events that took place in 1566 and 1567 and the conspiracy theories they inspired.

    Heidelberg Castle in Germany Illuminated Heidelberg Castle over the Old Town of Heidelberg The Heidelberg Castle in Germany is one of the foremost tourist attractions in Germany frequented by visitors from all across the world. It is believed that the first building of the Heidelberg Castle was built by Prince Elector Ruprecht III way back in the 15th century. This particular stone building has a very unassuming look. A lot of additions were made over a period of years. However, the castle was not well-maintained and that led to its ruined condition. The ruins of the Heidelberg Castle also had a mesmerizing effect on the minds of visitors. Poets and romantics found something very enamoring about the ruins of the castle. Even though a royal building was constructed opposite to the Ruprecht building by Prince Elector Philipp, the real credit for converting the fortress to a castle goes to Prince Electors of the 16th and 17th century. The palaces built by Ottheinrich and Friedrich IV occupy a very important position in German architectural history. They are indeed very impressive and so is the "English Building" built by Friedrich V. After lightning struck the Heidelberg Castle in 1764, it was damaged. The stones of the castle started being used by the commoners for construction of their own houses. Towards the beginning of the 19th century, Count Charles de Graimberg tried to preserve the castle. Much later in the year 1934, the King's Hall was added to it. Currently, the hall is used for hosting theatrical performances as well as banquets.

Woodcut, 25.3 × 70.2 cm. The view of Heidelberg (fig. 70) is a large, four-page foldout panorama of the city and Heidelberg Castle, on the banks of the river Neckar, a tributary of the Rhine. The view was not submitted by Heidelberg’s ruler, the Wittelsbach prince-elector Friedrich II of the Palatinate but by his nephew, Count Palatine of the Rhine Ottheinrich of Palatinate-Neuburg (1502–1559). Prince-elector of the Palatinate was the most prestigious office in the lineage of the counts palatine of the Rhine, held by the Wittelsbach family. Due to the division of territories among different branches of the family, by the sixteenth century younger branches held the less important office of count palatine in Simmern, Zweibrücken, Veldenz, and Neuburg. At the time of Ottheinrich’s submission, between 1547 and 1550, the re- bellious and bankrupt count lived in exile from his domains in Neuburg and could not make any territorial claims to Heidelberg. Nor did he attempt to do so in the intricate program of texts, genealogical trees, and illustrations that he submitted to the Cosmographia. Instead, Ottheinrich’s program served to advance and publicize his long-standing ancestral claim to the electorship.

As he explains below, he never regarded these two sides of his personality as contradictory but rather always saw them as inextricably linked, for German history has always been part of European history. Homeland Europe What incredible winds rush past a person over the course of time, especially in a period of transition like the one I have lived through. When I was born on April 3, 1930, a Thursday, in the Ludwigshafen municipal hospital, General Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg was the incumbent Reich President and Heinrich Brüning was Reich Chancellor in the Weimar Republic. My home region, the Palatinate, had been occupied by the French since the end of the First World War. Not until that summer of 1930 did the occupation forces leave the region west of the Rhine. The Palatines are a curious folk. This has to do with their history. They know how to celebrate and have fun. God provided the Palatinate with an abundance of wine and sun. Like the grapevine that digs itself into the ground, the people there are deeply rooted in their homeland; they are well acquainted with their history and with the tales of the Romans, who brought wine to the area, of the Speyer Cathedral, where the German kings and emperors of the Middle Ages were laid to rest in eternal peace, and of the diets of Speyer and Worms.
