P AGE 1 Q: Tell us about your background and your company, Connectivity Capital Partners. A: I started in investment banking after graduating from Harvard and focused on technology. I quickly realized I actually wanted to work inside the technology industry. So while still in my twenties, I found a role at Microsoft, where I had the opportunity to work directly with top executives including CFOs Greg Maffei and John Connors, and CEOs Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer among others. I was tasked with leading some strategic projects, ranging from Software as a Service to Open Source Software, which shape my thinking even today. I was also given the opportunity to lead internet infrastructure investments within a nascent corporate ventures effort. I led investments in Akamai (IPO), InterVU (sold to Akamai), and iBeam (IPO) among others. In 2004, Viacom recruited me to lead strategy and business development. -

Apollo Global Management Announces Conclusion and Release of Independent Review NEW YORK – January 25, 2021 – Apollo Global Management, Inc. (NYSE: APO) (together with its consolidated subsidiaries, “Apollo”) today announced that the Conflicts Committee of the Board of Directors has completed its previously announced independent review of Chairman and CEO Leon Black’s previous professional relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and publicly released the review’s findings. At a regularly scheduled Board meeting in October 2020, Mr. Black requested the Conflicts Committee, comprised of independent directors, retain outside counsel to conduct an independent and thorough review. The Committee subsequently retained Dechert LLP (“Dechert”), a leading global law firm. Michael Ducey, Chair of the Conflicts Committee said, “On behalf of the Board, we want to thank Dechert LLP for conducting a timely and thorough review. We are releasing the report and findings in its entirety in the interest of being fully transparent to all of our stakeholders.” Key findings of the Dechert report include: • Apollo never retained Epstein for any services and Epstein never invested in any Apollo- managed funds; • Epstein regularly advised Mr. Black on trust and estate planning, tax issues, philanthropic endeavors, and the operation of his Family Office; • All fees paid to Mr. Epstein by Mr. Black or his Family Office were for bona fide tax, estate planning and other related services, and the amounts were intended to be proportional to the value provided by Mr. Epstein; • Epstein’s advice was vetted by respected professional advisors; and • Dechert found no evidence that Mr. Black was involved in any way with Mr. -

Patients develop trust with doctors and hospitals, and he thought insurers should be the “glue” between them instead of creating friction. So Garipalli persuaded a couple of venture funds to pump $135 million into his own bid to build an insurer he describes as a technology-based clinical company, rather than “an actuarial engine” like the big legacy players. His company, Clover Health, sells only Medicare Advantage plans and has enrolled 16,000 members as of this month. It differs from UnitedHealth Group and other giants, Garipalli said, in the way it uses real-time patient data to connect seniors to the care they need. The plans also provide free primary-care visits, and notably, don't charge extra for seeing out-of-network providers. “The really large companies, like an Aetna or a United, they're really insurance companies at their core,” Garipalli said. “They spend a lot of money on technology, but we all know there's a big difference between spending a lot of money on technology and being a technology company.” Venture capitalists and entrepreneurs have been investing and building new health insurance and related companies at a torrid pace—which may seem odd, because the industry is highly regulated and has relatively low profit margins. -

EU4Digital: supporting digital economy and society in the Eastern Partnership Market Assessment for Digital Innovation and Scale-up Initiative in Eastern partner countries Final report June 2020 1 About this study In early 2020, EU4Digital Facility launched activity ‘Market Assessment for Digital Innovation and Scale-up Initiative (DISC) in Eastern Partner Countries’ (hereinafter – study / research) The goal is to analyse the investment landscape for digital high tech companies in these countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The activity was inspired by Digital Innovation and Scale-up initiative (DISC) in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe region (European Commission Factsheet). Based on the findings of this study, the European Commission will be able to adjust its plans to better serve the needs of the local markets, developing adapted financial support instruments. This research aims to: 1. Understand digital innovation and high-tech start-ups investment landscape and identify existing gaps on investment in Eastern partner countries. 2. Map the main private & corporate equity investors that provide financing to digital start-ups and fast growth companies in Eastern partner countries. 3. Map the main public sector investment programs in start-up / tech-oriented companies at the country-level. 4. Analyse micro-level data on private investments in start-up / tech-oriented companies in the region. 5. Provide recommendations to develop and use financial instruments for digital innovation and the scale-up of high-tech start-ups. The research focuses on start-ups at the creation and scale-up phases, rather than traditional SMEs on their path to digitalisation. -

BY BRUCE KOGUT * Introduction Uber Technologies, the privately held ride-sharing service and logistics platform, suffered a series of PR crises during 2017 that culminated in the resignation of Travis Kalanick, cofounder and longtime CEO. Kalanick was an acclaimed entrepreneur, building Uber from its local San Francisco roots to a worldwide enterprise in eight years, but he was also a habitual rule- breaker. 1 In an effort to put the recent past behind the company, the directors of Uber scheduled a board meeting for October 3, 2017, to vote on critical proposals from new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi that were focused essentially on one question: How should Uber be governed now that Kalanick had stepped down as CEO? Under Kalanick, Uber had grown to an estimated $69 billion in value by 2017, though plagued by scandal. The firm was accused of price gouging, false advertising, illegal operations, IP theft, sexual harassment cover-ups, and more.2 As Uber’s legal and PR turmoil increased, Kalanick was forced to resign as CEO, while retaining his directorship position on the nine- member board. His June 2017 resignation was hoped to calm the uproar, but it instead increased investor uncertainty. Some of the firm’s venture capital shareholders (VCs) marked down their Uber holdings by 15% (Vanguard, Principal Financial), while others raised the valuation by 10% (BlackRock).3 To restore Uber’s reputation and stabilize investor confidence, the board in August 2017 unanimously elected Dara Khosrowshahi as Uber’s next CEO.
