Ctc Emi Palmor 050-621-6904 The aim of this session is to better understand the state of racism and criminal justice reform in Israel with a specific case study on the Ethiopian community. There are approximately 125,000 Ethiopian Jews in Israel that make up almost 2% of the Israeli populations. This community begun immigrating to Israel in 1984. 35 years later, how have they integrated into society? What efforts have been made to fight systemic racism, intolerance and hate within the Israeli society. Recently, there has been a few incidents with police that have raised questions of racial profiling and systematic racism. 4 Additionally, JCPA is working on criminal justice reform in the US. What is the situation in Israel and are there any best practices o share with us? This session we will hear both from governmental actors responsible for fighting racism in the governmental system and also have a case-study from an Ethiopian activist who is working to change the laws and culture on this concern. Emi Paloar: What is the current situation? Israeli government has studied and produced a report on racism in Israel (can we give people copies) and he prioritized its implementation from ministerial to on the ground actors. What is its status, impact, and what still needs to be achieved?
