Avatar: The Legend of Korra + Monster Hunter = Korra the Barbarian Basically, it’s more or less the modern Avatar world with a little more absurdly silly technology, a few extra races, and the Avatar serving to protect people in a more literal sense instead of a spiritual one. Species/Nationality + Adding in Monster Hunter adds Dwarves and Dragonkin to the world. So Earth Kingdom ends up being Dwarves and Fire Kingdom ends up being Dragonkin, while Water and Air are Human. Though Air is still nearly extinct. + A note: This means that Mako and Bolin have both Dwarf and Dragonkin blood, though Mako takes after the latter and Bolin the former. Which probably has a funny story behind it. Drawbacks: + She’s the Avatar! and you gotta deal with it! (+0 CP) - Arrive shortly after Korra is discovered, at the age of four. The White and Red Lotus will both approach me, likely because of the following Legend of the Red Mage, and each offer to let me teach the Avatar with a few conditions. Obviously the Red Lotus want me to mold her into an engine of pure destruction, while the White Lotus want to make her a stalwart defender. [Simplifying their relationship as simply two sides of the same coin of the issue of how to deal with the monsters of this world might be for the best.] Have to stay a total of 23 years (13 extra on top of the normal 10) + Wounded/Crippled (+400 CP) - Loss of non-dominant arm. Prosthetics in this world are only cosmetic so far. People will tend to pity you. + And The Adventure Continues (+0) - But I haven’t been here yet… have I? The hub of this world. A capital city where all four races and cultures came together to blend into a roiling, cohesive, arguing whole. Skyscrapers of stone and steel and glass rose like glittering crystals from the center of the city, the buildings slowly getting smaller the further away one travelled from it. The paved streets ran like wide arteries between the buildings. Steam and gasoline powered cars fought for space alongside the large pack animals used by those from the outskirts. I drank it all in as I watched it slowly slip away from me as the steam ship I was on pulled further out towards sea. I suppressed the sigh I desperately wanted to unleash. Barely three days here and I was already shipping out for the wilds of the frozen north. Leaving behind the lovely comforts of modern society to live in a hut and eat whale blubber. But despite my complaints, I didn’t regret my choice. The White and Red Lotus Societies had made my options very clear. They both knew what I was, that I was a legendary warrior called the Crimson Mage, and not just the Air Nomad that I appeared to be. I hadn’t bothered to ask exactly how they knew. It didn’t really seem to matter. So I had accepted their charge to go and teach the greatest hero of this generation. A once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon known as an Avatar had been born several years ago and only recently discovered. The White Lotus faction wanted her groomed into a stalwart defender of the people of this world, ready to stand against the massive monsters that occasionally cropped up to threaten towns. While the Red Lotus faction demanded I train her as an exquisite weapon to hunt down rare and powerful monsters to aid in the march of modern progress. Given no choice but to pick one of them, as both had intimated that they could make my life extremely uncomfortable if I refused both, I threw my lot in with the White Lotus. I doubted that would be the end of the matter but the Red Lotus representative was polite enough to wish me luck in my corruption of the Avatar. I could have ignored both of them and gone about my time in this world. I surely had enough power to do it at this point. I could likely have leveled the entirety of Republic City if I had a mind to. But I had been travelling long enough to read the signs. This was the reason I had been brought to this world. So I played along and decided not to fully trust either the White or the Red. Katia, Bea, Hrist, and Peridot had chosen to come along with me. I had argued that there was no reason for them to come. That they would get bored, cold, and there wouldn’t be much excitement at the Northern Water Tribe. But they were curious and intended to at least start their wandering of this world by taking a peek at this legendary warrior. Bea, of course, would be sticking with me regardless. So we had been ushered aboard this steamship, named the Lotus Maneuver, given every respect and comfort, and mostly been left alone by the crew. Our trunks of winter clothes were secured down below, save the few outfits we would need as the trip progressed and the air became colder. And that brings us up to now, standing on the aft of the ship watching Republic City drift away. Katia slipped up beside me, her massive bow strapped to her back with a complicated series of leather straps and snaps. It looked more like a small siege weapon than a true bow. But then a lot of the weapons of this world were oversized and overengineered to deal with the massive beasts that lived here. “Worried about training another apprentice?” Her tone was light and casual. Happy. I wondered why until the wind shifted and I caught a familiar scent. I just chuckled and shook my head. “No. I trained you after all. How much worse could a monster hunter be?” “So that’s the way it is? See if I offer to guest lecture for you.” She smirked and nudged me in the ribs. “I’ll let you know if I decide to hold a class on setting my hair on fire. You used to be good at that.” “I still am, you know. I even got a whole load of new fire tricks from this world. I can set your hair on fire in a dozen new ways.” “See? Where am I going to find a master hair burner in this world if you don’t guest lecture?” The joking, teasing banter died away. For a few moments only the thwap-thwap of steam paddles on water filled the air. “This is going to be a long stay.” She tossed out, less casually. “Mmhmm…” I murmured. “Fourteen years, at least. We haven’t stayed in a world that long since Bea’s. And even that was only eight.” “I rather think this will be good for everyone. The last few worlds we barely stayed on the ground long enough to touch down.” Her positive attitude returned with a decidedly catlike stretch. It did lovely things to the folds of her shirt. “As long as I don’t have to stay at the north pole the whole time. If I have to eat seal and seafood for fourteen years I’ll go insane.” I complained without real vehemence in my voice. “You’ll have to travel at some point. After all, between the five of us we don’t have an Earthbender. And those Lotus guys said the Avatar would have to learn all four elements.” “I still wonder why that was. I know why Peridot wasn’t picked, but Hrist would have made a great Earthbender.” “I’m sure there’s a reason.” Katia answered vaguely. “There always is. Now quit moping and come below deck. They’ve got a whole fridge full of food none of us have even seen before. The natives are getting restless without their master chef.” So I smiled and turned away from the glittering gem that was Republic City to do as she asked. ============================================================== “I’m the Avatar! Deal with it!” The chubby, dark-skinned little girl screamed in my direction before launching a pair of small pebbles in my direction. I caught them easily and turned to the White Lotus overseer. He was a thin rail of a man, middle-aged and possessing a face of sharp angles that made him look decidedly unpleasant. His constant scowling did not help matters. “You can’t be serious.” “She’s four. What did you expect? A disciplined soldier?” Lao scoffed back at me. “I expected not to be attacked two seconds after introducing myself.” “Korra is a handful.” He admitted, the scowl turning into a wry smirk and back again.
