Here at Seton Hall, I am a part of Seton Hall United Nations Association (SHUNA), our Model United Nations team, I am a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi fraternity, and I am part of the Italian Student Union. I plan to finish my degree at Seton Hall, join the Peace Corps after graduation, and then work for a non-profit organization abroad. Eventually, I want to start my own non-profit organization abroad that helps with community development in communities that are often devastated by conflict and destruction. This committee takes place in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, one month after the end of the Hundred Year War.

  • Hey Arnold, Avatar: the Last
Subversive Masculinity in Children’s Animation: Hey Arnold, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Loud House by Kristen L. Sales A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Media and Communication Middle Tennessee State University February 2019 Thesis Committee: Chair Dr. Jane Marcellus Dr. Jennifer Woodard Dr. Mark Jackson Abstract Many existing studies of gender and gender representation in children’s animated media focus on women. These studies tend to focus on breaking down and analyzing the strict binaries of the representation of female characters. Studies of masculinity are often limited to a discussion of toxic male behaviors, with masculinity relegated to a point of contention instead of a basis of study. Using hegemonic masculinity as a theoretical framework, this thesis examines the representation of masculinity in three characters in children’s animated media—Arnold from Hey Arnold, Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Lincoln from The Loud House. Each of these characters subverts hegemonic or toxic masculinity. This thesis examines how each character does so. Using frame theory, the thesis will examine both what is said and what is not said within each character’s narrative. This thesis also analyzes what is seen within the narrative of the series that makes the characters’ depictions of masculinity subversive or not, including what the characters don’t do as well as what they do. ii Table of Contents I. • Avatar: the Last Airbender As a Moral Educator by Dara Poizner
Avatar: The Last Airbender as a Moral Educator By Dara Poizner Note on the Author: Dara Poizner is in her third year at the University of Guelph, pursuing a major in English. She hopes to spend her life talking to and learning from people, and writing about the issues close to her heart. Among other things, Dara is passionate about intersectional feminism, mental health advocacy, critical TV watching, and the belief that pineapples do belong on pizza. Avatar: The Last Airbender as a Moral Educator Introduction Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated American television series that aired from 2005 until 2008, and its young target audience is as deceptive to potential viewers as it is important. Created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the show’s many virtues include compelling characters, clever writing, an attractive design, and an engaging storyline; it is beloved to viewers of all ages. But within the framework of a beautifully made television series is a morally complex educational system that uses its target audience – children – as a model for which to employ its socially progressive values. Avatar takes advantage of children’s potential receptiveness to effectively introduce liberal attitudes, and the show itself becomes a vessel for humanism. This essay will discuss how Avatar: The Last Airbender successfully instills a sense of liberal morality among its viewers. It will conduct a comprehensive sectional analysis of the institutions and aspects of society discussed within the show, demonstrating how it dismantles oppressive systems and advocates for social justice. Background: Series Premise and Key Characters This essay will first provide some background outlining Avatar: The Last Airbender, to allow for a full understanding of the moral mechanisms at work within the show.

  • Avatar: the Legend of Korra + Monster Hunter = Korra The
Avatar: The Legend of Korra + Monster Hunter = Korra the Barbarian Basically, it’s more or less the modern Avatar world with a little more absurdly silly technology, a few extra races, and the Avatar serving to protect people in a more literal sense instead of a spiritual one. Species/Nationality + Adding in Monster Hunter adds Dwarves and Dragonkin to the world. So Earth Kingdom ends up being Dwarves and Fire Kingdom ends up being Dragonkin, while Water and Air are Human. Though Air is still nearly extinct. + A note: This means that Mako and Bolin have both Dwarf and Dragonkin blood, though Mako takes after the latter and Bolin the former. Which probably has a funny story behind it. Drawbacks: + She’s the Avatar! and you gotta deal with it! (+0 CP) - Arrive shortly after Korra is discovered, at the age of four. The White and Red Lotus will both approach me, likely because of the following Legend of the Red Mage, and each offer to let me teach the Avatar with a few conditions. Obviously the Red Lotus want me to mold her into an engine of pure destruction, while the White Lotus want to make her a stalwart defender. [Simplifying their relationship as simply two sides of the same coin of the issue of how to deal with the monsters of this world might be for the best.] Have to stay a total of 23 years (13 extra on top of the normal 10) + Wounded/Crippled (+400 CP) - Loss of non-dominant arm. Prosthetics in this world are only cosmetic so far.

However, no information presented in the following questions will directly contradict any other canonical information. For the purposes of this packet, all events will be spoken of in the present tense unless the events occurred prior to the beginning of the series. For example: “Princess Yue gives her life during this battle. (Siege of the North)” but “The Fire Nation massacred these people to begin the Hundred Year War. (Air Nomads)”. Packet Author: Justin Millman Packet Editor: Justin Millman 1. The penultimate scene in this episode is of Fire Lord Ozai’s coronation, and a recurring object in this episode is a pearl dagger retrieved from the initial Siege of Ba Sing Se. The line “A man’s past is his business” is spoken by the patriarch of one family in this episode; that man is Gansu, and his family is harassed by a group of four thugs at whom Gansu’s son throws an egg when this episode begins. Several flashbacks in this episode center on the royal family, including one of (*) Ursa’s last contact with her son. While one character sleeps in a barn, that character’s dual swords are stolen; those dual swords are later used to enhance that character’s firebending in a battle against a man who earthbends using a pair of hammers.

1 Avatar: The Last Airbender When my math teacher asked me what my favorite TV show was, I immediately thought of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was the cartoon that took me through my childhood and taught me endless life philosophies. I’ve finished through all 61 episodes more times than I can count and am able to clearly recall details of each episode. When realizing the hidden mathematics Avatar: The Last Airbender1 behind every second of it all, I had to delve deeper. In short, Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world where there are four nations (Earth, Water, Fire, and Air).2 In these nations, respectively, there are benders of that element.3 A bender is someone who has the ability to control an element of life from the four listed above. 1 Konietzko, Bryan, et al. Avatar, the Last Airbender. Dark Horse Books, 2011. 2 “The Last Airbender.” IMDb, IMDb.com, 2010. 3 Ibid. 2 You’d find water-benders in the Water nation, earth-benders in the Earth nation, and so on. While being a bender is useful in everyday life---like moving rocks to save people stuck or controlling ocean waters to move a boat---benders also use their abilities when fighting. In season 2 episode 6 of Avatar, the main characters (Aang, Katara, and Sokka) go to a tournament in the Earth nation where earth-benders fight each other for a cash prize.4 While most fighters seem like amateurs, Aang notices one particular earth-bender... The Blind Bandit. The Blind Bandit, or Toph, is a small, blind girl who uses her advanced earth-bending skills to listen closely and feel the movements around her, in order to know where, when, and how to attack.
