From your friends at Jackson Auto Worx JULY 2019 Summer’s Literal Ups and Downs It is said that life is a rollercoaster. It is also true that rollercoasters are, uh… rollercoasters. As summer is firmly here, we at Braking News are taking the plunge into one of America’s beloved summer pastimes; amusement parks. And specifically the thrilling feel of danger and excitement engineered for safety and mass consumption, the rollercoaster. • There are more amusement and theme parks in the United States than in any other country in the world. • According to the Roller Coaster DataBase, there were 4,639 coasters in operation around the world in 2018 — 4,455 of them steel, 184 wooden (3 of the woodies have loops in them! Take that, preconceived childhood notions!) • Of those 4,639 rollercoasters in the world, 19 of them are found in Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia California, the largest number of rollercoasters in any one park anywhere in the world. • California may host the park with the greatest number of coasters, but in order to experience the fastest roller coaster in the world, you’ll need to travel to the other side of the world. The fastest roller coaster, “Formula Rossa” ride, is located in Abu Dhabi’s Formula One theme park and launches its riders to a top speed of 149 miles per hour. • According to Guinness World Records, Bakken, located in Klampenborg, Denmark, opened in 1583 and is currently the oldest operating amusement park in the world. • The worlds fastest coaster may be in Abu Dhabi, but he tallest roller coaster is in the Six Flags Great Adventure Park in New Jersey.

DOWNLOADABLE EXTRAS Forces and Energy 3 Roller Coasters It is thought that the oldest roller coaster type rides have their origin in Russia and date back to the 1800s. They were sleds supported with wooden struts that ran down steep slopes made of ice. These 'Russian Mountains' weren’t really able to be used in many other countries as they needed a very cold climate to make and keep the ice frozen. In France they attempted to make these ice slopes but it was too warm, so instead they developed wooden rails that a waxed bottomed sled slid down (similar to a bobsled). In 1885, LaMarcus Adna Thompson was granted a patent for the fi rst wooden roller coaster. The basic design hasn’t changed hugely since the fi rst coaster opened in New York in 1884, where a specially designed car full of safety features such as harnesses and safety bars travels along a specialised rail track made of many twists, turns, loops and drops. Thompson based his design on a gravity powered railway that delivered coal down a hill. The railway was designed for coal but became a tourist attraction when the owners started charging people to have a ride. His roller coaster was a 180 m long one way track, where passengers boarded rolling benches at the top of a slope and travelled down then up the other side where they stopped got off and boarded a different car on a return set of tracks. This was not a very effi cient model and so it was quickly changed to a full circuit oval track.

Higher. Longer. More twists and turns. Amusement parks are in competition to create the next thrill ride. They hope to satisfy even the toughest coaster critics. But how do amusement parks design and build these massive monsters they hope will draw thousands of thrill seekers? Designing a Coaster Like most of the things around you, roller coasters start out as an idea in someone’s head. Usually that someone is a roller coaster designer. Before designers start, they must consider many different things. For example, if the coaster is designed for children, the hills will most likely be gentle. The cars’ speed might be slow. Designers might use tall hills and maximum speeds for those ultimate thrill seekers. However, there is one thing that is true for most coasters—the first hill is the tallest. Why is this? A roller coaster’s cars do not have engines. So as a coaster’s cars are pulled up the hill, they gain potential energy. After the cars round the top of the hill and begin their descent, the potential energy is changed into kinetic energy. Some roller coasters have loops and turns that take riders upside down! Designers must determine how to get the cars to go fast enough to complete the loop, while keeping the passengers safe.

  • Roller Coasters: Evolution of Screaming Machines
March 16, 2020 Roller coasters: evolution of screaming machines The roller coaster has long become a symbol of life itself with all its ups and downs, breathtaking emotions, fear and joy. These iron monsters evoke a primitive desire to feel truly alive, enjoy a dose of adrenaline, leave one’s comfort zone and experience the whole gamut of emotions. The history of the roller coaster It’s hard to believe that roller coasters, or as they are also called, “Russian mountains” or “screaming machines,” trace their history to about 300 years ago in Russia. Initially, the slides were artificial ice hills in winter. Their slope’s angle was approximately 50 degrees. Next to the hills, towers were erected where thrill-seekers climbed with their sleighs, and then descended the ice hills. The towers reached 20m high; the length of an ice slope was about 180m. Having taken such amusement rides in St. Petersburg, Catherine the Great became their ardent admirer and even ordered a summer version of the slides to be built for her in the royal residence. Instead of their ice version, a wooden slope was installed, and instead of a sleigh, carts on wheels were used, which moved along special grooves. Tourist entrepreneurs from France who visited Russia in the 19th century were so excited by the idea of these attractions that upon returning home they created their own version of a roller coaster (Les Montagnes Russes) with carts that moved along a trackway. Over time, the slides changed and improved, gaining more and more fans. While in Europe such slides served as entertainment, in the United States their use was more pragmatic.
