This newsletter aims to share with the reader all the information abort KCSS events, publications and implementation of projects during the period July - December 2016.

United against violent extremism Violent Extremism has been turned into a concern threat worldwide, even in . After three years of intensive research, the Kosovar Centre for Security Studies (KCSS), has identified the need of community involvement in preventing and combating these negative phenomena. Starting from September 2016, KCSS has started implementation of the project “United against violent extremism”, which aims to engage citizens and community members in countering and preventing violent extremism and radicalization in 11 .

KCSS Director, Florian Qehaja was part of inaugural meeting in Washington DC where he delivered a presentation on re-integration versus recidivism panel.

KCSS part of the international conference on countering violent extremism As part of the continuing activities in preventing radicalization and violent extremism that leads to terrorism, KCSS participated at the annual international conference against terrorism in Turkey. Researcher Skender Perteshi said that Kosovo is making concrete steps, not only in combating violent extremism, but also in designing of the programs for re-habilitation and re-integration of former foreign fighters who have returned or will return in Kosovo.

European Integration School KCSS has successfully completed two workshops of the Security and Rule of Law Module of the European Integration School which is supported by the Kosovo Foundation for Open Society (KFOS). The workshop on Intelligence Led Policing was held in August, in Durres of Albania. While the workshop on preventing and combating violent extremism was held in November, in Ohrid of Macedonia. Participants of the workshops were about 30 representatives of public institutions, namely those of security, justice, civil society, political parties and media.

Study visit to Nato Headquarters - Public Diplomacy Division KCSS with the support of the NATO Public Division Diplomacy has organized a study visit at NATO Headquarters in Brussels during 14-16 November. The aim of this visit was to gather representatives of civil society sector, media and academia and the key NATO representatives to discuss and share their insights on relevant issues related to Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Global Britain and contemporary defense challenges KCSS in cooperation with the British Embassy in Prishtina has held a conference on “Global Britain and contemporary defense challenges”. Invited as speaker, Mr. Nick Gurr, director for international security policy at the defense ministry of Great Britain held a presentation on the topic of British foreign policy, global and international security challenges. Speaking about Kosovo, he expressed the readiness of the Great Britain to continue supporting Kosovo in regional and international integration processes, especially in the security field. KCSS part of the George C. Marshall Center in Europe Mentor Vrajolli, senior researcher at KCSS has completed the program of security studies at the German George C. Marshall Center, on November 16, 2016. Vrajolli was one of 106 security professionals from 51 countries around the world that have been graduated from this program, while KCSS is the only non-governmental organization that has been invited to be part of this program.
