Je voudrais donc vivement les remercier à travers ces quelques mots (parfois humoristiques), en espérant n’oublier personne… Si c’est le cas je m’en excuse d’avance. Cette aventure desmaniaque (et non pas démoniaque… quoique…) a commencée par une conversation avec Johan Michaux, mon co-directeur de thèse. Après un bref harcèlement moral de ma part pour savoir s’il avait un sujet de mémoire de master à éventuellement me proposer, il me répondit qu’il avait un sujet sur les mulots. Après quelques explications sur ce sujet, il me dit alors qu’il y aurait peut-être aussi un sujet sur le desman des Pyrénées… Intrigué, je lui répondis naturellement : « le quoi ?! » (deux mots que j’ai à mon tour entendu un nombre de fois incalculable par la suite). Finalement il ajouta « c’est un petit mammifère qui vit dans les Pyrénées et quand tu le prends dans la main, il meurt ». J’étais conquis. Cette aventure aurait pu se terminer après ce mémoire mais, après plusieurs péripéties et autres rebondissements, elle a finalement (et heureusement!) continuée par une thèse de doctorat. Donc merci Johan de m’avoir fait confiance; de t’être démené pour me trouver le financement pour réaliser cette thèse; de m’avoir toujours soutenu et encouragé que ce soit de près ou de loin, en début ou en fin de thèse; d’avoir toujours été aussi disponible; d’être resté toujours aussi positif et optimiste (mais ça c’est les gènes belges…); de m’avoir accueilli chez toi à plusieurs reprises (et de m’avoir laissé boire quelques-unes de tes bières lorsque j’étais loin de la Belgique, je sais que ça n’a pas été facile pour toi…); bref, merci pour tout! Je voudrais également remercier Stéphane Aulagnier, qui a bien voulu accepter d’être mon autre co-directeur de thèse (sans harcèlement moral cette fois-ci). Merci de m’avoir aidé pour toutes les réinscriptions à l’université de Toulouse (pas toujours évidentes pour un belge) et d’avoir toujours été très disponible malgré la distance (en espérant ne pas avoir saturée votre boîte mails...). Notes are provided on the deletion, correction or status of 63 species, and a revised check-list of 710 species is provided with a generic index. Species listed, or not listed, as Irish in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (2nd edition), in comparison with this list, are discussed. The Irish status of Gabrius sexualis Smetana, 1954 is questioned, although it is retained on the list awaiting further investgation. Key words: Staphylinidae, check-list, Irish Coleoptera, Gabrius sexualis. Introduction The Staphylinidae (rove-beetles) comprise the largest family of beetles in Ireland (with 621 species originally recorded by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor (1997)) and in the world (with 55,440 species cited by Grebennikov and Newton (2009)). Since the publication in 1997 of Irish Coleoptera - a revised and annotated list by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor, there have been a large number of additions (59 species), confirmation of the presence of several species based on doubtful old records, a number of deletions and corrections, and significant nomenclatural and taxonomic changes to the list of Irish Staphylinidae.

    BLACKMOORFOOT BEETLES Blackmoorfoot Reservoir is situated at the base of the Pennines c. 5.6 km SW of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire (GR: SE098127) at an elevation of 256 m a.s.l. Construction began on 1 May 1871 and the reservoir was filled to overflowing by 20 December 1876. As with most Victorian reservoirs, Blackmoorfoot was formed by damming a valley, but due to the topography, it was necessary to build two dam walls. The total cost of the reservoir was £260,549. The surface area of the reservoir is relatively large (c. 41 ha) but being situated at the base of the Pennines, and having a maximum depth of 12 m, there are no marginal or submerged plant communities (with the exception of small outcrops of Amphibious Bistort Persicaria amphibia along the west bank). Plantations of deciduous woodland (in which Rhododendron is dominant) fringe the west and east banks and there is a more extensive wooded area on the western half of the south bank. A small oak woodland (Orange Wood) lies immediately to the south of the reservoir and is included in the recording area. The bird life of the area has been documented since the 1950s, but it was not until the mid-1970s that other life-forms began to be scrutinised with any seriousness. Since this time a number of specialists have been invited to the reservoir with a view to identifying organisms within their specialisation. With the advent of the Recorder database it became possible to maintain records that were easily accessible and workable. It was therefore decided that a subsite approach would be the best way forward: 16 subsites were erected.

Longfellow (1856), Hiawatha, Pt 2, XVIII, The Death of Kwasind From every point of view, ‘bugs’ – the insects and other invertebrates – represent the most diverse group of organisms both locally on Alderley Edge and nationally in the British Isles. The total number of bugs recorded from the Edge by the Alderley Edge Landscape Project (AELP) is 1,732 species: they are listed in Appendix 13.1. The total numbers of the eight groups of bugs recorded on the Edge is summarised in Table 13.1. The best-represented are the harvestmen, with their total accounting for 44 per cent of the British species; the least represented are the Hymenoptera, at 1.7 per cent. As a whole, the groups given in Table 13.1 make up about 7 per cent of the British list of invertebrate species. The total of 1,732 species for Alderley Edge is by no means exhaustive because for many practical reasons only selected groups were surveyed and identi- fied. For instance, the soil fauna remains totally unknown.
