To all members O'fi the Christiar¡ faith He is the Messiah, the Saviour. However, àccording to the Roman Catholic Church, the Virgin Mary is also Coredemptrix and Mediatrix. In the eighth century, John of Damascus composed four homilies in her honor. Saint Anselm, ât the end. of the el-eventh centuryr prayed fer-- vently to Mary. In the twelfth century, Amadeus of Lausanne composed eight honilies in her honor. In all three' Mary has the power to intercede for sins, to grant grace a¡d protec- tion, by her divine maternity to approach very close to God' a¡d. to serve as Queen of Heaven, next in power after her Son. This basic understanding of her power has not changed significantly since the eleventh century. -

Week 2: Intercessory Prayer and Praying with the Saints Intercessory Prayer Catechism of the Catholic Church says: “Intercession is a prayer of petition which leads us to pray as Jesus did. He is the one intercessor with the Father on behalf of all men, especially sinners. " (CCC par.2634) What is Intercessory Prayer: • Intercession is the act of intervening on another person’s behalf. Intercessory prayer is a prayer said on behalf of someone else. • It can be a prayer for a friend, a family member or just a person in need. • One of the earliest examples of intercessory prayers comes from the Book of Genesis when Abraham pleaded with God for the deliverance of the people of Sodom. • The scriptures describe Intercessory prayers as building bridges between God and those we are praying for. Praying with the Saints The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: The witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom, especially those whom the Church recognizes as saints, share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives, the transmission of their writings, and their prayer today…Their intercession is their most exalted service to God's plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world. (CCC par. 2683) What is Praying with the Saints: • The practice dates to the earliest days of Christianity and is shared by Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, the other Eastern Christians, and even some Anglicans—meaning that it is shared by more than three quarters of the Christians on earth. • The word "saint" comes from the Latin word sanctus, which translates to "consecrated" or "holy." These saints, living exemplary lives, provide for us examples to follow so that we may, in turn, follow them to Heaven. -

Early Veneration of the Saints Regarding the veneration of the saints, there aren’t many pieces of evidence from the first century. However, there is evidence from the very early period, possibly as early as the first century. It is important to keep in mind that the Apostolic Tradition, while it has roots going back to the first century, developed over time taking on a more elaborated form from its simpler precedents. It is also important to keep in mind that we are talking about a grass roots devotional practice that did not leave much paper trail. Still there are multiple sources that support the Orthodox understanding of the veneration the saints. Philip Schaff in History of the Christian Church Vol. II §27 noted that the early catacombs contained inscriptions where the departed are asked to pray for their living relatives (p. 83). What is interesting is a letter from St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Church of Smyrna dated AD 155. It briefly says, “Him indeed we adore (worship) as the Son of God; but the martyrs we love as they deserve (veneration), for their surpassing love to their King and Master, as we wish also to be their companions and fellow-disciples” (pp. 82-83). The distinction between the worship of Christ and the veneration of the saints is very much the same distinction the Catholic Church and Orthodox Christians use today. This shows the remarkable continuity of tradition with early Christianity. It can also be taken as evidence that the distinction between adoration and veneration was not concocted by the Seventh Ecumenical Council but has very early roots. -

Pepin shown standing Pepin le Bref Baldwin II, Margrave of Flanders 2 Continental Ancestors Before Hastings Saints, nuns, bishops, brewers, dukes and even kings among them David Anderson March 12, 2016 Abstract Early on, our motivation for studying the ancestors of the Chicago Rodger’s was to determine if, according to rumor, they are descendants of any of the Scottish Earls of Bothwell. We relied mostly on two resources on the Internet: Ancestry.com and Scotlandspeople.gov.uk. We have been subscribers of both. Finding the ancestral lines connecting the Chicago Rodger’s to one or more of the Scottish Earls of Bothwell was the most time consuming and difficult undertaking in generating the results shown in a later book of this series of three books. It shouldn’t be very surprising that once we found Earls in Scotland we would also find Kings and Queens, which we did. The ancestral line that connects to the Earls of Bothwell goes through Helen Heath (1831-1902) who was the mother and/or grandmother of the Chicago Rodger’s She was the paternal grandmother of my grandfather, Alfred Heath Rodger. Within this Heath ancestral tree we found four lines of ancestry without any evident errors or ambiguities. Three of those four lines reach just one Earl of Bothwell, the 1st, and the fourth line reaches the 1st, 2nd and 3rd. -

Smith Centre for Islamic Culture and Society, University of Mataram, Mataram 83125, Indonesia; [email protected] Abstract: This article is a feminist ethnographic exploration of how ‘indigenous’ notions of a ‘sacred feminine’ shape Sufi praxis on the island of Lombok in the eastern part of Indonesia in Southeast Asia. I demonstrate through long-term immersive anthropological fieldwork how in her indigenous form as Dewi Anjani ‘Spirit Queen of Jinn’ and as ‘Holy Saint of Allah’ who rules Lombok from Mount Rinjani, together with a living female saint and Murshida with whom she shares sacred kinship, these feminine beings shape the kind of Sufi praxis that has formed in the largest local Islamic organization in Lombok, Nahdlatul Wathan, and its Sufi order, Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan. Arguments are situated in a Sufi feminist standpoint, revealing how an active integration of indigeneity into understandings of mystical experience gives meaning to the sacred feminine in aspects of Sufi praxis in both complementary and hierarchical ways without challenging Islamic gender constructs that reproduce patriarchal expressions of Sufism and Islam. 9 OCTOBER SAINTS CYRIL, JAMES AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Martyrs (1934) Memoria In 1934 Turón, a coal-mining town in the Asturias Province in Northwestern Spain, was the center of anti- government and anticlerical hostility in the years prior to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The Brothers school was an irritant to the radicals in charge of the town because of the religious influence it exerted on the young. The Brothers were known to defy the ban on teaching religion and they openly escorted their students to Sunday Mass. On the First Friday of October, the authorities broke into the Brothers' house on the pretext that arms had been hidden there. Father Inocencio, a Passionist, who had come the night before, was preparing to say Mass for the Brothers. They and their chaplain were arrested, detained over the weekend without trial, and then in the middle of the night were marched out to the cemetery where they were summarily shot. It was October 9th. They were: Br. Cirilo Bertrán (José Sanz Tejedor) the Director, 46 years old. Br. Marciano José (Filomeno López López) the cook, was 34. Br. Julián Alfredo (Vilfrido Fernández Zapico) was 31. Br. Aniceto Adolfo (Manuel Seco Gutiérrez), the youngest, was 22 and still in triennial vows. Br. Victoriano Pío (Claudio Bernabé Cano), was 29. Br. Benjamín Julian (Vicente Alonso Andrés), was 26. Br. Augusto Andrés (Román Martin Fernández), 24. Br. Benito de Jesús (Héctor Valdivieso Sáez), was 24, born in Buenos Aires and is the 1st Argentinean saint. Inocencio de la Inmaculada (Manuel Canoure Arnau) too was killed with them. -

Cycle of Services in the Eastern Orthodox Church Compiled By Archimandrite Nektarios Serfes Introduction by Father Nektarios Serfes: Nothing is so spiritually uplifting, and so rewarding then prayer before God in the Church. The Orthodox Church has a cycle of services, and all of us should make every means to attend these services. It’s not really how long are these services, but what we put into them that is spiritually rewarding. When the Church calls us to prayer, we should rush with great Christian love to go to these services, and give our Lord God due honor and worship, at the same time we should think about our spiritual relationship with our God, and our path to our salvation. During these cycle of services we begin to realize how much our Lord God loves us, and wants us to be a part of His Kingdom. We can participate in His Kingdom in prayer, and we can behold His great spiritual beauty as we gaze around the Church and behold Him, as well as the opening arms of the Mother of God, the saints, the prophets, the apostles, and the martyrs all surrounding us with their prayers and intercession on our behalf, what a blessing! Then again preparations before the Divine Liturgy are spiritually necessary, and that is if when we will go to Holy Communion, we should consider speaking to our priest about going to Holy Confession. We also should fast from certain foods anticipation of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, i.e. at the least, fast from meats on Wednesday and Friday, and all foods and liquids the morning of the liturgy unless these are deemed necessary for medical reasons. -
Intercession of Saints
INTERCESSION OF SAINTS What is Intercession? It is a “supplication to God on behalf of another person”. Thus, we are not praying to the saints; we are asking their prayers and their support for us. Isn’t Jesus our only Intercessor? (One Mediator.. Many Intercessors) The Protestants refuse the intercession of saints, claiming that we only have one Advocate before God, Jesus Christ. They base their claim on the verse: ”For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all" (1Tim 2:5-6). However, according to this verse, there is a great difference between the mediation of our Lord Jesus Christ and the intercession of the saints. Meditation of Lord Jesus: The mediation of Jesus Christ is expiatory. He mediates as an Atoner and a Redeemer who sacrificed Himself and paid the wages of our sins. In His mediation, He is saying to the Father: "Do not count for them their iniquity for I have laid on Me the iniquity of all of them" (Is 53:6). Our Lord Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and man. He gave the Father His right-fulfilling and divine justice and gave us forgiveness by dying for us as atonement for our sins. "And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world" (1Jn 2:1-2). Intercession of Saints: The intercession of the saints for humans has nothing to do with atonement or redemption. -
