OUR OPINION What’s at stake with a merger here must be a better way of managing the public affairs of a community of T 70,000 than the one we have now. City and county officials squabble constantly and rarely seem to be pulling the same direction when a combined effort is what’s needed. Instead we have duplication of services and inefficiencies across the board. It is time to address these concerns. Despite all this, the economy here is picking up. In fact, it appears we may be on the cusp of a new boom, one that could rival those of the 1990s and early 2000s. Celebrating Grace Elizabeth When it happens, it will happen fast. Brothers Charlie and Craig Livingston, of Tampa, traveled to Lake City on Saturday to take part in the Florida Antique Bottle Collectors Fifth Annual Antique Bottle and Collectible Show and Sale, which got underway at 8 a.m., and was scheduled to run until 3 p.m., at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. “It’s a good show with good turnout,” Craig Livingston said at about 12:30 p.m., adding that childhood memories are a key reason people seek out antiques. “People are buying just a little bit of everything.” In addition to antique bottles of numerous shapes and colors, items on display and for sale included paintings, wood- carvings, vintage road signs, lamps and others. Event coordinator Brian Hoblick estimated that as of approximately 12:45 p.m. an estimated 200 people had attend- ed or taken part in the event, traveling from mid- dle Georgia, Key Largo, Pensacola and other plac- es to take part. “It’s a nationwide hobby,” he said. “We encourage dealers to be here with other antique collectibles.” To learn more about how you can take part in Photos by STEVE WILSON/Lake CIty Reporter this annual event, contact TOP: Charlie Livingston traveled from Tampa to take part Hoblick at 386-804-9635. in the Florida Antique Bottle Collectors Fifth Annual Antique Bottle and Collectible Show and Sale in Lake City on Saturday. Jobless rate down slightly in county

By STEVE WILSON [email protected]

More people in Columbia County have jobs and the county has more workers, according to statistics released by the State of Florida. According to the April employment figures released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Columbia County’s unemployment rate for the month of April was 3.5 percent, down from 3.9 percent in March. From the same report, the labor force increased slightly from 29,228 in March to 29,238 last month. Local employment numbers are doing slightly better than that of the state as a whole, as Florida’s jobless rate continues to stand at 3.9 percent, where it’s been since the end of 2017, according to preliminary numbers released Friday by the state Department of Economic Opportunity. An estimated 398,000 Floridians qualified as unemployed, 2,000 fewer than in March, from a workforce of 10.2 mil- lion. Locally, 1,021 people in Columbia County were unem- ployed last month, down from 1,145 in March.

Retired prosecutor, local author recieves award in Illinois

Three brothers accused of murder, a victim who wasn’t really dead and a man destined to be presi- dent — Abraham Lincoln had quite the career. Nobody is the subject of more books than Lincoln, except perhaps Jesus Christ, said Bob Dekle, 70, a retired Lake City prosecu- tor turned history scholar. But only a handful focus on Lincoln’s work as a lawyer, and most of those choose only a single case to examine. That’s why Dekle wrote “Prairie Defender,” a com- prehensive look at all of Lincoln’s murder cases, which recently won an accolade from the Illinois State Historical Society. “No other book does anything like that,” Dekle said. Each of the 18 chapters focuses on at least one case, sometimes more. Dekle researched the book through contempo- rary newspaper articles, letters and other docu- ments. He originally set out to write a book on the famous almanac trial, which took FILE place two years before George R. “Bob” Dekle Sr. holds the 1857 edition of an almanac that was used to help Abraham Lincoln win the famous Almanac Trial, in Lincoln won his bid for the which his client was falsely accused of killing another man with a slingshot. presidency.
