HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES TO 1877 This course is designed to introduce students to important themes in the history of the United States between the earliest history of European colonization in North America and the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction. An emphasis of the course will be on the cultural history of the colonial era, the American Revolution, and the first century of the new republic. The following comprise the principal objectives of this course: • Expose students to the art of critical reading and historical analysis of primary source documents. • Allow students to develop their own interpretative frameworks for understanding the significance of various developments in the United States' first century. • Provide students with a strong conceptual background to interpret conflict and change in American culture both in the past and in the present. • Exposing students to the geography and genealogy of cultural change in America REQUIRED READINGS: The following books are available to purchase at the College Bookstore: Bruce Dorsey and Woody Register, eds., Crosscurrents in American Culture. Theda Perdue and Michael Green, eds., The Cherokee Removal. Moodle: The vast majority of the required readings for this course, as well as supplemental readings for the writing assignments, are available on the course’s Moodle site. Students are responsible for bringing copies of Crosscurrents in American Culture to every class meeting, since class discussions will focus on the interpretation and discussion of the primary- source documents in that reader. -

The British invasion begins in New York and the Continental army faced lost battles and men who deserted. As Washington's army decreased in size and he lost or retreated from battle, he was becoming increasingly worried that he might not be able to train the army to defeat the British. The decisive battle that turned the tide of the war, in favor of the Continental army took place after Washington crossed the Delaware river in the middle of the night. The Crossing is an excellent historical retelling of the beginning of the American Revolution. It is full of maps, pictures, and even gives a description of the famous painting on the cover by Emmanuel Gottlieb Leutze. If you want to know the true story of the beginning of the American Revolution told in eloquent, simplified text you need to check out The Crossing. The American army was truly the underdog in this war with the British and it makes you understand the significant odds that Washington was up against. The Crossing contains an extensive travel guide to sites of the Revolution, an index, a timeline and a list of books to continue to feed your inquisitive mind. -

It's All in the Details: Making an early 19th Century Ball Gown By Hope Greenberg In 1775, the year of Jane Austen’s birth, women wore gowns with a fitted bodice, the waist at or below the natural waistline, and full skirts over a visible, often ornate, petticoat. They were made in a variety of heavy silks, cotton or wool. By the time she had reached her late teens the ornate gowns were being replaced by simple, lightweight, often sheer cotton or silk gowns that reflected the ideals of classicism. This guide provides images and details to consider when creating an early 19th century ballgown. The examples provide a general guide, not an exact historic timeline. Fashion is flexible: styles evolve and are adopted at a different pace depending on the wearer's age, location, and economic or social status. These examples focus on evening or ball gowns. Day dresses, walking dresses, and carriage dresses, while following the same basic silhouettes, have their own particular design details. Even evening gowns or opera gowns can usually be distinguished from ball gowns which, after all, must be designed for dancing! By focusing on the details we can see both the evolution of fashion for this period and how best to re-create it. What is the cut of the bodice, the sleeve length, or the height of the bustline? How full is the skirt, and where is that fullness? What colors are used? What type of fabric? Is there trim? If so, how much, what kind, and where is it placed? Based on the shape of the gown, what can we tell about the foundation garments? Paying attention to all these details will help you create a gown that is historically informed as well as beautiful. -

After a heated race Jefferson won the presidency by seventy-three electoral votes to sixty-five for the Federalist John Adams. The Republicans captured control of Congress as well. In subsequent elections, the Republicans would build their majority, as the Federalists faded. The Friends of the People had triumphed over the Fathers of the People. But their people were white: Jefferson’s new postmaster general fired all the free blacks working in his department. Because the election of 1800 swept the Federalists from power, Jefferson called his victory the “Revolution of 1800.” His victory vindicated the principle that the republic’s rulers should attend carefully to public opinion and should avoid preaching deference to the common people. -
