Matt, who is fascinated by Antarctica, is visiting the white continent and recalling his love affair with Lisa. In voice-over, he compares being in Antarctica to being ‘two people in a bed - claustrophobia and agoraphobia in the same place’. Images of ice and the never-ending Antarctic landscape are effectively cut in to shots of the crowded concerts.

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

  • River of Fire: Critiquing the Ideology of History (Student Paper)
River of Fire: Critiquing the Ideology of History (Student Paper) I T between the personal and the historical has always been a key theme attracting poets. However, Qurratulain Hyder, in her “historical novel” River of Fire, takes up this relatively common theme in such a way that her treatment of it produces a strong critique of the received notion of history. In other words, the author of River of Fire depicts the, at once, tragic and comic drama which takes place between the historical and the personal. Hyder’s artistic representation of that drama epistemologically questions what is known as history. This paper seeks to explore the ways in which this novel works against, parallel to and as a supplement to history. I use the term “history” here with two distinct meanings. Sudipta Kaviraj defines history as firstly meaning “the course of happenings in time, the seamless web of experiences of a people,” and secondly as meaning “the stories in which what had happened are recov- ered and explained.”1 In this discussion I will read River of Fire against both of these definitions. However, for greater clarity, I will use the term “history” to convey the first meaning and “historiography” to convey the second. II In the world of this novel, princes leave their thrones and their beautiful 1Sudipta Kaviraj, The Unhappy Consciousness (Delhi: Oxford University Pr., ), p. • T A U S women, preferring intellectual pursuits over ruling countries and waging wars. Introduction The filmography of Ingmar Bergman is often described in terms whose aptness is hard to deny, but whose connotations can be a bit hazier – “dark,” “serious,” and “melodramatic” are often used to describe his films, doubtless due to particular themes reoccurring throughout his works. Repeatedly expounded are ideas of life and death, God and Satan, light and darkness. These ideas sometimes manifest themselves literally, such as the character of Death in The Seventh Seal, and sometimes exist as struggles his characters face, such as a priest’s crisis of faith in Winter Light or Isak Borg’s struggle with living in Wild Strawberries. At other times these ideas are shown directly to the viewer on the screen: cinematographer Sven Nykvist, who worked with Bergman on many of his films, reportedly sat in the church where Winter Light was filmed for an entire winter day in order to observe how the light moved throughout the space.

LONG SYNOPSIS In Afghanistan in 2014, as the troop-withdrawal approaches, French Army Captain Antarès Bonassieu (Jérémie Renier) and his squad are assigned to monitor a remote valley of Wakhan, Afghanistan, on the border of Pakistan. You were involved in both of those films! In 1988, a year before Coming Out was released, you appeared in Axel Otten’s and Helmut Kissling’s documentary The Other Love. It was the first film about homosexuality ever made in East Germany; the DEFA Studios produced the short documentary on commission for the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden. The goal was to spread awareness about and campaign for tolerance and equal rights for homosexuals in the GDR. How did you get involved in this film? DK: It was a weird coincidence. I was already involved in many initiatives and events for the emancipation of gays and lesbians in East Berlin in the late 1980s. After Gorbachev came to power, there was a huge wave of open- mindedness and tolerance towards minorities. That is how The Other Love got made in the first place.

Spirited Away 1 From Ashes to Stone: Development of Chihiro in “Spirited Away” "You're called Chihiro? That name is too long and hard to pronounce From now on, you’ll be called Sen. You got that? You're Sen." - Yu-Baaba An insecure little girl is thrown in a world of wonders, magical and dangerous at the same time, and emerges a strong, assertive character. Chihiro is able to accomplish this because she does not lose her own identity to the name-stealer Yu-Baaba – and in turn does not lose her virtues. Her personal journey becomes even more valiant when compared to the other characters of the bathhouse, who have lost their soul with their name. The newest installment in Studio Ghibli’s unparalleled collection of animation movies, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away, “Sen or Chihiro in the Land of the Gods”) accomplishes everything its predecessors did – seamless animation, an engaging story, and a brilliant soundtrack. Spirited Away is a story about a girl who is stuck in a mythical world of gods, ghosts, and witches – Chihiro must overcome adversity and fear in order to save her parents and escape the world that has enslaved her. Director Miyazaki Hayao, head of Studio Ghibli, has managed to craft a cinematic masterpiece, one that will doubtless be considered a classic. Spirited Away takes on an extra level of significance, as Miyazaki has announced that it will be his last film. In retrospect, it can be seen that Spirited Away has amalgamated the best elements of previous Ghibli-Miyazaki movies into one spectacular film about a lost little girl named Chihiro.
