Much of this novel may not make sense if one didn't live through , when a third-rate burglary either took down a presidency or revealed a cancer on the honor of the nation. It appears that he adds a lot of fictional material to Hunt's story and his interaction with Magruder and LaRue, although he gets the major facts right: the Committee to Re-elect the President paid Hunt substantial amounts to pay for attorneys for himself and some of the Cubans arrested in the Watergate break-ins, and Hunt probably was the person who caused the White House connection to the break-in to become known. It took me back, behind the scenes, the turbulence, the acrimony, the finger pointing, and the very real and, at times, fearful national tension and angst, to the most historic event of my late teenage years. Mallon wastes no time on the familiar caricatures of a sloshed, foul-mouthed chief executive and his wooden wife. The reader did a great Richard Nixon as well as being able to differentiate his voice enough for all of the many characters. INTRODUCTION Shortly after I resigned my position as General Counsel of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department in 1971, I was startled to receive a two-page letter from Attorney General John Mitchell. I was not a Department of Justice employee, and Mitchell's acquaintance with me was largely second-hand. The contents were surprising. Mitchell generously lauded my rather modest role "in developing an effective and professional law enforcement program for the District of Columbia." Beyond this, he added, "Your thoughtful suggestions have been of considerable help to me and my colleagues at the Department of Justice." The salutation was, "Dear Jerry," and the signature, "John." I was elated. I framed the letter and hung it in my office.

    Remembering Martha Mitchell by Linda Goudsmit, October 20, 2020 Does anyone remember Martha Mitchell? I do. Martha Mitchell was the wife of John N. Mitchell, United States Attorney General under Richard Nixon. Martha had a habit of listening in on John's phone calls and meetings, and then phoning her media friends with political scoops. John Mitchell and Richard Nixon became acquainted through their professional careers when their law firms merged and became Nixon Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander and Mitchell. In 1968 Nixon appointed John Mitchell as his attorney general. The Mitchells moved from New York to Washington DC, and into the Watergate apartment complex. In 1972, John Mitchell resigned as attorney general and became the director of the Committee to Reelect the President (CREEP), and Martha became an outspoken DC socialite who regularly went on talk shows and frequently talked to the press. During the campaign, Martha began telling her media contacts that CREEP had begun resorting to dirty tricks to win the election. The dirty tricks Martha Mitchell referred to were the stealing of top-secret documents, and the bugging of phones at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) offices in the Watergate complex. The wiretaps failed to work properly the first time, so on June 17, 1972, five burglars broke into the Watergate offices to finish the job. Four of the burglars, James McCord, Frank Sturgis, Eugenio Martinez, and Bernard Barker, had CIA connections. The fifth, Virgilio Gonzales, was a locksmith in Miami who fled Cuba after the Castro takeover. A week before the break-in, the Mitchells traveled to Newport Beach, California to attend a series of fundraising events.
