Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

On Being a Jewish Author: The Trace of the Messiah in Elie Wiesel’s Novels David Patterson University of Texas at Dallas n Somewhere a Master (1982), Elie Wiesel invokes a teaching from Pinchas of Koretz, a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, founder Iof Hasidism: “To be Jewish is to link one’s fate to that of the Messiah—to that of all who are waiting for the Messiah” (23). To link one’s fate to that of the Messiah is not only to await but also to work for the coming of the Messiah, even though he may tarry— even though, if one may speak such words, he may never come. To be sure: the Messiah is the one who has forever yet to come , so that to be Jewish is to forever be engaged with an eternal yet to be . To live is to live on the edge of the yet to be . Or, for Wiesel, to live is to live in the midst of the and yet . There abides the Messiah: in the and yet . For Wiesel, to link one’s fate to that of the Messiah is to link one’s fate to the and yet , particularly after the Shoah. The Shoah al - tered forever the meaning of the Twelfth of Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles of Faith, the belief in the coming of the Messiah, even though he may tarry—a belief that would recur throughout the works and the life of Elie Wiesel. Bearing witness to the truth and the wisdom of the Jewish mes - sianic tradition was, for Wiesel, the tie that most profoundly bound L&B 38.1 2018 2 / Literature and Belief him to the Jewish tradition and therefore to Jewish life: for Wiesel the tie to Jewish tradition was his post-Holocaust connection to life, and that bond lay most profoundly in his link to the Messiah. -

Ferdinand Hitzig, eminent Biblical critic and Hebraist, used to say to his class. "If not, sell all you have, and buy a Septuagint." Current Biblical studies reflect the accuracy of his judgment. This and the next installment are therefore dedicated to the task of helping the Septuagint come alive for Biblical students who may be neglecting its contributions to the total theological picture, for clergymen who have forgotten its interpretive possibilities, and for all who have just begun to see how new things can be brought out of old. THE LETTER OF ARISTEAS The Letter of Aristeas, written to one Philocrates, presents the oldest, as well as most romantic, account of the origin of the Septuagint.1 According to the letter, Aristeas is a person of con siderable station in the court of Ptolemy Philadelphus (285-247 B. C.). Ptolemy was sympathetic to the Jews. One day he asked his librarian Demetrius (in the presence of Aristeas, of course) about the progress of the royal library. Demetrius assured the king that more than 200,000 volumes had been catalogued and that he soon hoped to have a half million. He pointed out that there was a gap ing lacuna in the legal section and that a copy of the Jewish law would be a welcome addition. But since Hebrew letters were as difficult to read as hieroglyphics, a translation was a desideratum. 1 The letter is printed, together with a detailed introduction, in the Appendix to H. -

JOHN’S UNIVERSITY COLLEGEVILLE, MINNESOTA ABSTRACT Among the scholia of an Arabic catena to Genesis published by P. de Lagarde in 1867 is an explanation of Gen 9:18–21 attributed to Philoxenos of Mabbug. This short passage is the subject of the present study. After a brief survey of the biblical text in question according to various Arabic versions, it will be shown that there is very little to commend its Philoxenian authenticity, while it clearly echoes an interpretation found in Ephrem’s Commentary on Genesis. In addition, two other related passages (one with a new interpretation) in Ephrem are brought to the discussion, and the scholion’s similarity and difference to Jewish traditions recorded in the Targums, Bereshit Rabba, and Midrash Tanhuma (Buber) are also pointed out. 125 126 Adam C. McCollum In his monumental and weighty work on Christian literature existing in Arabic, Georg Graf, when speaking of the exegetical literature of Philoxenos that was translated and survives in Arabic, remarks: “Minor [or tenuous] loans from the exegetical work of Philoxenos are found as scholia in the Arabic Pentateuch catena together with Ephrem at Gen 1:21 (on the extraordinary pairing of the dragons), independently at Gen 9:18–20...”1 This brief note will take a closer look at the scholion on Gen 9 in question, but before turning there, it is worth asking why Graf connects Philoxenos here with Gen 1:21 and Ephrem’s interpretation of it. -

Indeed, the quest of which Schweitzer wrote has continued unabated, and is in many respects more diffuse and nuanced than ever before.1 Of approaches and angles to evaluating the great Galilean there is no end, and understanding his place, not only in the culture of his day, but as an image-bearer of hope and humanistic values in contemporary society is eternally challenging. What fresh perspectives can yet another short volume of scholarly reflections add to the already dense collection of tomes on Jesus the Jew? However fashionable to consider Jesus in terms of his own piously religious, Jewish culture, this subject by itself is no particular guarantor of academic merit. It has after all been the habit of a good many scholars and critics to produce commentary regarding the “Jewish Jesus,” as if such a moniker were in some way insightful. -

The Hebraic perspective - Who the Messiah? Since the days of Moses, what were the people expecting from the Prophet that Moses foretold would appear (Deut 18). Were they expecting a King, a Prophet, or a Priest. Were they expecting 1, 2 or even 3 Messiahs? Today there is a common Jewish understanding that there will be two ‘end-times’ Messiah’s: “A Kabbalistic tradition within Judaism is that the commonly-discussed messiah who will usher in a period of freedom and peace (Messiah ben David) will be preceded by Messiah ben Joseph, who will die sacrificing himself while uniting all of Israel in preparing the world for the arrival of Messiah ben David.” – see http://www.aish.com/tp/i/moha/48909612.html The Qumran scrolls, the Book of Jubilees and the Testaments of the Tribes—all of which are close to the Essene1 worldview and written prior to the first century of the Common Era, reflected the belief in three messiahs: an eschatological messiah, along with the messiahs of Aaron and Israel. So what were the characteristics of this eschatological (end-times) Messiah? Messiah is the English transliteration from the Hebrew ‘Mashiach’ meaning ‘anointed one’ i.e. someone chosen specially by God for some purpose. This term is translated into ‘Christos’ in Greek and then to ‘Christ’ in English. The term occurs some 37 times in the Hebrew Scriptures (KJV OT version - Strong’s #H4886) and is not always a prophetic reference to the eschatological Messiah. It is used to refer to the kings of Israel, the high priest, the patriarchs, as well as the Assyrian Cyrus (see Isaiah 45). -

Foreword. —Although the Cabala belongs to the past, it nevertheless demands our attention on account of the interest taken in it by men like Raymond Lully, the "Doctor Illuminatus" as he was styled (died 1315) : John Picus di Miran- dola (1463-1494); John Reuchlin (1455-1522); Cornelius Henry Agrippa von Nettesheim ( 1486- 1535) ; John Baptist von Helmont (1577-1644) ; the English scholars Robert Fludd (1574-1637) and Henry More (1614-1687). How much The- ophrastus Paracelsus (1493-1541) and Jacob Boehme (1575-1624), called "Philosophus Teu- tonicus," were influenced by cabalistic doctrines, is difficult to state. Sep. 2021 Chapter 1 After the Messianic Idea An anonymous seventh-century CE Jewish writer tells the story of a mythical woman named Hephzibah, the mother of the messiah ben David, who fights alongside the messiah ben David and the messiah ben Joseph in the final eschatological battle against Armilus. Hephzibah slays wicked gentile kings with a rod of almond wood that had belonged to Adam, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, and David in turn and was hidden away until the last day to be wielded by the mother of the messiah. -

Mitchell I have recently addressed common misunderstandings about Messiah ben Ephraim ben Joseph, the eschatological Ephraimite king who is slain before the coming of Messiah ben David.1 I have proposed that, contrary to current opinion, his essential characteristics derive from Deut. 33:17 and so predate the turn of the era.2 Here, I chal- lenge another popular misconception, the widespread claim that Messiah ben Joseph’s death has no atoning power. Thus, for instance, Strack and Billerbeck state: However all the sources that we possess about Messiah ben Ephraim agree on this, that they ascribe no atoning power to his death. It is indicative in this respect that never a word from Isaiah 53 is applied to Messiah ben Ephraim.3 1 See particularly D.C.
