Introduction 1 Introduction Creator’s Letter Princess Francois, CC’11 Dear Charles Drew Members, Pulse was created specifically for you! The idea for creating this came after reading a similar book I received from my participation in the University of Pittsburgh’s Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SPAEP) in Summer 2009. I found the book incredibly resourceful and it served as a pre-med bible to me. My only criticism was that it was not entirely written by students. I later discovered a mini premed booklet written by students of the Harvard Pre-Med Society. An overachieving Columbian, I decided I would create one written by Columbia premeds, for Columbia premeds, combining the best aspects—depth and student perspective—of Pitt’s book and Harvard’s. In this endeavor, I have aspired to build upon Charles Drew’s diverse activities while complementing the usual guidance of Columbia’s Office of Pre-Professional Advising. The purpose of this book is to offer honest advice about how to survive (and conquer!) the intense pre-med curriculum at Columbia. The content of this book is broad but detailed in its presentation. In these pages, you will find topics such as how to pick a major, studying abroad, extracurriculars, summer research opportunities, the “gap year”, and much more. Here, students share personal stories, talking openly about mistakes they feel they made and what they might have done differently. Our motivations in sharing these stories are to pass on knowledge we hope might help you achieve the same success we want for ourselves – to become physicians with a purpose, to become physicians that pay it forward, with the first step of getting into medical school. -

It shows diversity by telling stories. The stories are those of teachers and students, woven together into a single narrative to give some expression to the diversity, variety, and richness that exists in most teaching envirorunents, inside and outside of schools, in teachers and in students. The stories are woven together to illustrate a central theme, a teacher and his students working to come to terms with themselves, with their uniqueness and with each other. It is about moving from fear to acceptance, from ignorance to imderstanding, from hiding to tmth, from mourning about who and what we are to accepting ourselves with joy. It is about finding the integrity to be, the integrity to let be, and the integrity to teach. Topics addressed or illustrated in these stories include addiction, suicide, physical and emotional abuse, sexual orientation, narrative writing (therapy), poetry therapy, joumal writing, healing and faith. Using activities makes developing this behaviour more fun for both children and educators. In this handbook you will find a compilation of ready-to-use activities (activities), flexible enough to suit your own needs. The ideas behind the activities are: Developing social competences is a direct approach to the prevention of violence. Emotionally stronger children are less vulnerable to violence. The earlier children start developing social competences the better, as these may take long time to be acquired. The activities have been developed with pre-school educators and primary school teachers in mind to support their daily work with children. All activities have been tested over two periods and adapted following the comments and suggestions of practitioners working both in pre-schools and primary schools in six different countries. -

This study investigates the musical lives of children experiencing homelessness through the lens of the ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). Children encounter music in a variety of ways and develop their own lexicon of meaning that depicts the relationships they have in, through, and around music. Relationship connections in this study were depicted through a system of relationship networks (Neal & Neal, 2013). In this study I present and analyze the cases of nine participants who attended an after-school care program at a homeless shelter for families in the southwestern United States. Participants were 8 to 12 years old and represented diverse ethnicities and genders. Data were gathered over a period of two to eight months, depending on participant, via interviews, music and art making, and observations. Research questions in this study included: What are the relationships, as experienced in, through, and around music, in the lives of children experiencing homelessness; and, What do music experiences tell us about the lives of children experiencing homelessness? Some children experienced fractured music relationships and could not continue to engage with music in comparison to their lives before homelessness. Some children continued to make music regularly before and during their shelter stay. -

HANDBOOK TO HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS Ken Keyes Jr. Foreword Millions of years ago when our animal ancestors had to survive in the jungle, it was necessary to have an instantly effective fight or flight mechanism. When a tiger was about to spring, an automatic emotional response was a life saver. A nervous shock was needed to squirt adrenalin into the blood so that muscles became jet powered. Emotional alarms were needed to command full attention. When a tiger was ready to jump, there was no time to admire the beautiful sunset. As a jungle survival mechanism, our animal ancestors were programmed for automatic duality -- automatic feelings of otherness, threat, and paranoia. Survival required instant domination of consciousness to meet the perils of the jungle. We are the pioneers in the evolution of human consciousness. It was only about 10,000 years ago that our ancestors built the first cities. As civilization grew, survival no longer depended on the instant fight or flight of the jungle. Survival and happiness now depend on tuning in to the overall situation involving ourselves, the people around us, and the total environment of the here and now. Perceptiveness, wisdom, and oneness are now the ingredients of effective and happy living. But our biocomputers are still programmed for jungle fight or flight -- for a fast release of adrenalin into the blood stream, and for rapid heartbeat -- for automatic anger and fear. In our social interactions, our consciousness magnifies molehills and makes them into mountains -- and this constant distortion destroys our energy, our insight, and our ability to love. -
