Living in Limeira: Here you will find important information to assist you plan for your stay in Limeira HOUSING (OFF CAMPUS) Unicamp does not provide university dorms for Exchange Students, but we, here at the International Office (VRERI), can help students find accommodation, especially in the Campinas Campus. We cannot, however, be held responsible for any arrangements or contracts signed by the student. You should discuss the details with the real estate agency or landlord. Unicamp’s main Campus is located in the district of Barão Geraldo, 5 miles from downtown Campinas. However, many students take classes in Limeira, at the Faculdade de Ciências Aplicadas (FCA). There are buses serving this itinerary, but tickets cost R$3,40 each way. For this reason, we suggest that you look for housing near FCA Campus if you plan to study there. Listed below are the many kinds of housing available around Campus: Rooms Rented shared rooms for girls, boys or mixed, in a house administered by a landlord. It costs around R$ 300 to R$600. Kitinetes (Studio Apartments) Small apartments with 2 or 3 rooms (bathroom, bedroom and kitchen, integrated or not), usually furnished. Rent is high, between R$700 and R$1400. It might be difficult for a foreign student to sign a lease because contracts are usually established for a year and require a guarantor or a deposit. “Repúblicas” (shared houses) Rented houses administered by the students themselves, autonomous and independent. There are enormous possibilities of prices, location and styles. Hotel (Short term accommodation) Carlton Plaza Limeira – http://www.carltonhoteis.com.br/site/o_hotel/Carlton-Plaza-Hotel----Limeira-- /11 Here are a few sites with housing offers: http://www.internationaloffice.unicamp.br/housing/ http://morarunicamp.com.br/ http://sistemas.ft.unicamp.br/moradia/index2.php Also, please contact Ms. Lucineia Moraes if you have any questions: [email protected] MONEY – AVERAGE EXPENSES The Brazilian currency is the REAL and we suggest that you bring some cash with you because change offices are not available everywhere and rates are higher at airports. Students with scholarship We strongly recommend that students on scholarships bring R$1.000 to cover the expenses until the scholarship is paid. FOOD The University Cafeteria costs R$ 2,00 and you will have access to it as soon as your admission process is concluded (usually the day after class registration). Besides the Cafeteria, there are many snack bars serving meals (from R$10,00 to R$ 20,00), snacks (R$5,00 a R$10,00) and juices (R$4,00 to R$6,00). TRANSPORTATION There is no subway in town. However, Limeira has an integrated bus system and the single trip ticket costs R$3,40. After making a registration on SIT, you are able to get a card called Passe that allows you to take two buses within a 1-hour period paying only R$3,00 or R$1,00 to be student. http://sitlimeira.com.br/ Inside the FCA Campus you will be able to get around by bike or walking. Buses to other Brazilian cities – including Campinas and Piracicaba, where Unicamp’s other Campuses are located – leave from Terminal Rodoviário de Limeira. Bus schedules are available here: http://www.vbtransportes.com.br/vb/ From Unicamp (Limeira) to Unicamp (Campinas) – within campuses You can take a free bus offered by the university. For further information and registration: http://www.ft.unicamp.br/intercampi There are also paid buses and vans that make the trip regularly. Received 23 August, 2014; Accepted 17 December, 2014 The State of São Paulo, Brazil is the major orange producer in the world. The “Valência” orange is one of the most important cultivars for industry with a high efficiency of processed juice. Climate is the main factor of influence for citrus yield and quality and its study is fundamental for understanding the climatic requirements of the crop. The estimation of yield and quality by agrometeorological models helps to understand the effects of climate on crop cycle, besides being an option for orchards planning activities. Understanding the relationships between water deficiencies (DEF), phenological phases, yield (fruits per box (FRBOX) and quality of “Valência” orange grafted on rangpur lime (VACR) are important to improve the water use in the production areas and to provide information about water stress for plants during its cycle. The present study aimed to investigate the influence of monthly DEF on yield and quality parameters of VACR, in order to develop agrometeorological models for the main four producers regions of State of São Paulo, Brazil. Data of 13 years were used for analysis, being the period from 2001 to 2009 used for calibration and from 2010 to 2012 for validation.

This report includes the findings of a study done by a team of graduate researchers from American University’s School of International Service in June 2014. It addresses the impacts of rural exodus on livelihoods, community, and the environment in the Rosário da Limeira region with a focus on youth migration. Over a three week period, the team used semi-structured and informal interviews with members of the community including municipal leaders, farmers, and youth to collect relevant data on the perceived causes of rural exodus, the threats it presents to the region, and potential measures that could be taken to mitigate the trend. Based on a review of secondary sources and the interviews, the report provides a brief overview of the current context in and surrounding Rosário da Limeira and juxtaposes this with possible future scenarios for the study area depending on whether efforts will be made to prevent rural exodus. To conclude, several recommendations are offered based on observations from the study, and the feedback received from interviewees.

(May 2010) Kellie Joan Wilcox-Moore, B.A., Austin College Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Christian Brannstrom Fuelwood is an important source of domestic energy in rural regions of Brazil. In the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, native species from the Atlantic Forest are an important source of fuelwood, supplemented by wood from eucalyptus and coffee plantations. The use of native species is complicated by their increasing scarcity and the recent enforcement of forest policies that prohibit the felling of even dead natives trees without a permit. In this study, the factors contributing to the use of fuelwood in this region, despite the simultaneous use of liquid petroleum gas in most households, are explored by examining fuelwood use patterns in four small rural communities in the Zona da Mata Mineira using household surveys and semi-structured interviews.

1 University of Oxford Centre for Brazilian Studies Working Paper Series Working Paper CBS-13-00 (E) Industrial Clustering in the State of Sao Paulo By Wilson Suzigan State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) Industrial Clustering in the State of Sao Paulo Wilson Suzigan Institute of Economics, State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) Flemings Visiting Fellow in Economics (Trinity Term 2000) Centre for Brazilian Studies, University of Oxford 2 Abstract This paper argues that, contrary to the trend in the State of Sao Paulo as a whole, the interior of the State is managing to increase its share of the country’s manufacturing output and employment because of successful industrial clustering. On the basis of an index of specialisation, the paper identifies a number of clusters and selects a few of them for comments in the light of existing theoretical approaches and empirical evidence. Some policy implications are also discussed. 3 Foreword This paper derives from an ongoing joint UNICAMP (Universidade Estadual de Campinas) and UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista) research project co-ordinated by myself in collaboration with Joao Furtado, from the Department of Economics, UNESP. The research project team includes Renato de Castro Garcia, graduate student and researcher, NEIT – Nucleo de Economia Industrial e da Tecnologia, Institute of Economics, UNICAMP, and Sergio E. Ketelhute Sampaio, undergraduate student, IE/UNICAMP. I greatly acknowledge their support, project discussion and help with the database, the latter especially for computing an index of specialisation by micro-regions and municipalities of the state of Sao Paulo. Dr. Luis A. Paulino, from the Secretary of Employment, State Government of Sao Paulo, has encouraged the project since its inception.
