Four Propeamussiidae species (Parvamussium lamellatum n. sp., bathyal, new species, Parvamussium scutulatum n. sp., Parvamussium vesiculosum n. sp., Cyclopecten new records. comptulus n. sp.) are new to science. RÉSUMÉ Pectinoidea (Bivalvia: Propeamussiidae, Entoliidae and Pectinidae) des Monts sous- marins Tarava, des Îles de la Société et de l’Archipel des Tuamotu (Polynésie française). Dix-huit espèces de Pectinoidea (six Propeamussiidae Abbott, 1954, un Ento- MOTS CLÉS Bivalvia, liidae Teppner, 1922, onze Pectinidae Rafinesque, 1815) ont été récoltées des Polynésie française, Monts sous-marins Tarava, des Îles de la Société, et de l’Archipel des Tuamotu, littoral, Polynésie française. Quatre espèces de Propeamussiidae (Parvamussium lamel- bathyal, espèces nouvelles, latum n. sp., Parvamussium scutulatum n. sp., Parvamussium vesiculosum n. sp., nouvelles occurences. -

During a field trip to the Peña-Corada Unit of the southernmost Esla region of the Cantabrian Moun- tains in 1927, the German stratigrapher Wilhelm Kegel sampled brachiopods and bivalves from a section in the Laoz valley near La Ercina. The stratigraphic position is believed to be part of the No- cedo Formation of Frasnian age. This fauna includes poorly preserved steinkerns of a near-shore bi- valve fauna that was prepared for publication including labels and proposed names, but never pub- lished. The fauna represents only a very small and random part of the former community. But as in- formation on Frasnian bivalves is scarce, the few specimens add important information on the distri- bution and palaeogeographic occurrence of near-shore, that is, Rhenish Facies bivalves within the south Laurussian – Rheic Ocean Realm. -

Lab 5: Mollusks
Geos 223 Introductory Paleontology Spring 2006 Lab 5: Mollusks Name: Section: AIMS: This lab will introduce you to the eutrochozoan protostome phylum Mollusca. You will become familiar with the basic anatomy of the three mollusk groups which are most abundant in the fossil record: gastropods, bivalves, and cephalopods. Emphasis is placed on the various modes of life adopted by different members of each group, and how the form of the organism has been evolutionarily modified to suit each mode. You will also use a computer database to identify “mystery fossils”. By the end of this lab, you should have a good knowledge of the anatomy of the three most diverse groups of mollusks, an appreciation for how organismal form reflects function, and an understanding of how innovations in ecology and anatomy resulted in the evolutionary radiation of each group. INTRODUCTION: Mollusks are unsegmented protostomes with a trochophore larval stage during early development, and are one of the most diverse metazoan phyla. The basic mollusk body plan consists of a muscular foot, a visceral mass (containing the digestive tract and associated organs), a mantle cavity containing gills, a radula for feeding, and a calcareous shell protecting the visceral mass. The shell has a high preservation potential, and mollusks are common in the fossil record. There may be as many as ten classes of mollusks (depending on which text book you read). Each class has modified the basic body plan to some degree, allowing the group to radiate into different ecological niches. We will here focus on just three classes, which are common as fossils and exemplify the evolutionary diversification of mollusks. -

Buenos Aires, 25-11-2007 Reptiles marinos jurásicos y cretácicos de la Patagonia argentina: su aporte al conocimiento de la herpetofauna mesozoica Zulma GASPARINI*, Marta FERNÁNDEZ, Marcelo de la FUENTE y Leonardo SALGADO Abstract. The history of the knowledge of the different groups of Mesozoic marine reptiles of Patagonia can be divided into two major periods: the first one from the end of the XIX century up to 1940, during which the findings were scarce and few taxa are currently valid. The second, from the 1940’s to date. The biogeographic patterns of the marine reptiles during most of the Mesozoic could be analysed on the basis of systematic studies of the Patagonian records. One of the most outstanding paleogeographic events of the Jurassic was the dismembering of Pangea, which gave place to the Caribbean Corridor connecting, probably intermittently, the Western Tethys with the Eastern Pacific. The close affinities between the Jurassic marine reptiles of Argentina and Chile with those of Europe suggest that such corridor would have been one of the routes used by the marine reptiles for their dispersion. Thus, the middle Jurassic forms of Patagonia and Chile belong to genera recorded also in Europe (Metriorhynchus, Stenopterygius, cf. Muraenosarus and cf. Cryptoclidus), or to taxa with close phylogenetic relationships (Maresaurus, Mollesaurus). This is also seen in most of the genera of the Late Jurassic (Ophthalmosaurus, Aegirosaurus, Metriorhynchus, Geosaurus, Dakosaurus, Liopleurodon, Pliosaurus). Likewise, the finding of plesiosaurs and mosasaurs of the end of the Cretaceous in Patagonia arose a new context for the discussion of the biogeo- graphic, distribution of these predators in Southern Gondwana. -
