3 The Rector Writes This edition of the magazine gives prominence to the launch of the new Jeremy Irons film Trashed directed by Candida Brady. Unlike Jeremy’s other films, Trashed is a hard-hitting documentary dealing with waste and the appalling human and environmental consequences of pollution. Christians believe that human beings have a responsibility to be good stewards of God’s creation and Trashed is a wake up call to all of us who share this planet that the need to be its good stewards has never been greater. A polluted environment seems a long way away living in this part of and being able to walk in the beautiful bluebell woods at this time of the year. But even here dumping takes place and we owe a debt of gratitude both to the local authority and to keen volunteers who do what they can to alleviate the problem. However Trashed graphically confronts us with evidence of the huge damage that our life- styles are causing both to the physical environment and to some of the poorest people on earth. Trashed encourages us all to urgently engage with the issues of waste and sustainability and not to think that it’s a problem for others to sort out. In challenging us all to review our life-styles, Trashed has brought it home to me that Christians really do have a responsibility to engage with the problems that this film illustrates. This responsibility is shared with people the world over – people of different faiths and beliefs, people of good will. Are there readers of The Parish News who would be interested in organising a Watlington showing of Trashed and instigating conversations about it? If so please get in touch and let’s see if we can make it happen. Christopher Idris Evans (Revd) Rector We’re looking for a New Editor Please get in touch with me if you would like to know more

7 Churchwarden’s bit What have I learned today? NEVER to put God ‘on hold’ ! Yesterday He gave me a wonderful idea for our Parish magazine, and I thought “Hold that thought Lord, I want to go to our Church Service”! Well now its all gone, and I am struggling with vague ends of thoughts, BUT I know He is a loving and forgiving Lord, so if I start, I am hoping He will fill in the holes on this!

It was about our Lord being relevant and with us daily. Not just in a dusty old Victorian Church on a Sunday. I don’t know about you, but as good and all as Christopher, or Lucie, or Angie or Tony’s Sermons are, I can easily find myself slipping during the week. All those wonderful Christian ethics fall away and I can get irritated by the least thing, grumpy even. I need another hit with the Holy Spirit!

Well never say our Lord doesn’t embrace technology, because nowadays He has discovered the internet, and that ‘Word’ that was promised to us in Ezekial Chapter 47, the river that starts gushing, then is ankle deep, then knee deep and so on until the water is gushing with such a pace that you cant ignore it, its here !

Everyday the Lords words are rushing around the internet. Words of encouragement, from other Christians all over the world. Readings from the Bible, and for me, more helpfully, explanations on those Readings.

There is even a Christian Radio station. You can find it on the Internet or on a DAB radio or on the television if you have Sky. Its called UCB. There are various options, I prefer the UCB Inspirational channel with its lovely songs of Worship. Every so often though, my aging religious rock chick tendencies surface and I go for UCB UK with its Rock worship. However the vision of my startled Granddaughter diving behind the sofa at the sight of her Grandmother and her air guitar has hampered my enthusiasm somewhat, and I am settling for ‘age appropriate’.

I am absolutely sure that this is affirmation that our Lord not only supports us in a vision of a relevant Church in our town today, but is at the forefront and saying ‘about time’. We really do need a newspaper in one hand and a Bible Reading in the other to make sense of today, and the will and love to help each other, as we are all pilgrims on a journey !

I have put a few of the ‘river’ of resources below in case any of you feel you need topping up during the week! And for those older beloveds not on the internet, I do apologise, but would love the chance to have a cup of tea and a chat with you about whatever has touched me on the internet today. Just call me! Val Kearney

10 WATLINGTON AND DISTRICT CARE HOME GARDENING CLUB Welcomes Raymond Blanc Having asked to be put in touch with the local Britain in Bloom group after launching the competition’s 2013 Edible Britain theme, celebrity chef Raymond Blanc visited Watlington on Wednesday 15th May. As part of Raymond’s visit, Tim Horton, Chairman of Watlington in Bloom (a finalist in this year’s competition) brought him to see the gardening activities at Watlington and District Care Home. Despite it being a gloomy overcast day Raymond Blanc brought his own special ray of sunshine which was reflected in the resident’s faces as he chatted to them. The Gardening Club formed in March 2011 by volunteers (the late Anna Thomas) & Pauline Verbe is one of the popular activities run by the home’s Activities Leader Liza Simon, whose role is to develop a year-round range of activities for the residents to enjoy. Vegetables are grown from seed and transferred to raised beds. Potatoes grown in bags for easy harvesting; strawberry container; flowers and herbs all adding fragrance and colour. Anyone can enjoy this outdoor activity despite any physical disabilities, either participating or just enjoying the fresh air and camaraderie. On his visit to the home, Raymond said: “I am delighted to be part of a campaign that adds so much value to local communities, particularly when it benefits places such as this lovely care home. The team have put From the left:Pauline Verbe & Cheryl Barnes time and energy into the gardens, (Garden club volunteers) with Janet; Raymond encouraging residents to spend time in and Claire (Claire & Janet are residents & keen the greenhouse and helping make their participants) back: Pete Hemmins responsible for grounds so beautiful.” Main Gardens

12 DYING 4LIFE Clarity is the most important thing about death. Sue Ryder don’t look through you, they see you. My partner, Robin Samson, stayed at the Sue Ryder in for five weeks, before dying of cancer in July 2012. The Sue Ryder community gave me and our family the strength to keep going because someone was always beside us, sometimes nothing was said but we felt the care and compassion. Nothing was too much trouble. There was humour and laughter, no taboos, everything was ok. I felt there was love around us, Robin called them, ‘his angels’. It was as if he was at home because he wasn’t afraid to die there. They go ‘the extra mile’ and they care deeply that families feel comfortable. It is such a special place because of the skill in communication, on every level, which eases the vulnerability that families feel at this time. Everything is shared and explained and the staff really listen to what everyone needs. We felt cared for as a family and offered a sanctuary which lessened our pain and isolation. THIS LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE HAS INSPIRED ME TO CHAMPION THE PHENOMENAL WORK THAT IS DONE WITHIN THE Sue Ryder movement and I would like to do this in two ways: By raising money to help them continue this work By filming a documentary to raise awareness of the work of Sue Ryder If my experience can capture and highlight the essence of their care then perhaps other families who face this challenge can become aware of the comfort and support on offer.

Dying 4 life helps us - we need to be surrounded by love to enable us to die We need to be surrounded by love to enable us to go on living If you would like to attend our fundraising event - see p2 for details, can offer guidance, expertise, time or money I would love to hear from you – please get in touch with Karen Hilton tel: 01491 613645 mob: 07547 710633 12 Beech Close Watlington OX49 5LL

Blessed with good weather, the ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for Wonderland in Bloom’ stall at the St George’s Day celebrations was a great success, raising £150 for Watlington in Bloom by selling plants in teacups and cakes and cup cakes. With many thanks to all those who made cakes, planted the cups and manned the stall.

15 News from Pyrton April and May have proven to be very busy and interesting months for Pyrton. On April 2nd we were invited to take part in Radio Oxford’s ‘Breakfast Show’. Roving reporter, Jo Thoenes, joined Philip Pinney, Kath Gomm, the Rector and myself to talk about the late arrival of the daffodils and history of the village. Although a somewhat ‘nerve racking’ experience, we did enjoy putting Pyrton ‘on the Oxfordshire map’. The daffodils did finally put in an appearance in mid April and our visitors’ book showed people had come to see them from all over the local area. In April we also launched our website for St. Mary’s. You can find out details of forthcoming services and events as well as background historical information. The website can be found on www.st-marys-pyrton. We are still learning how to manage the updates so please bear with us till we become more proficient. We would like to encourage as many people to access the website as possible so that it becomes easier to find when using search engines. As I write we are making last minute preparations for the Fete and praying for good weather – ideally the weather we have just enjoyed over the Bank Holiday weekend. It may be possible to include a report on how things went before the Parish News goes to print but if not, more next time. We are now looking forward to starting the second stage of renovations on June 3rd. We have been very fortunate to receive a generous grant from English Heritage and Diocesan approval for the work – we are just waiting for the Faculty to arrive! The contractors are Norman & Underwood, who will carry out the work during June to August, under the watchful eye of our architect, John Radice. Please note that the church and churchyard will remain open as usual during this time but visitors will need to be aware of the scaffolding etc. At our Annual Parochial Meeting in April, we were sorry to say ‘Goodbye’ to Sally Rawstron. She has done so much valuable work for the church whilst on the PCC, for which we are extremely grateful. We are pleased to welcome Betty Raymond in her place. We were all very sad to hear the news that Dr Ken Hugh-Jones died suddenly on May 2nd and send our heartfelt condolences to all his family. Ken has been a stalwart supporter of St Mary’s church ever since he moved in to the village. As a member of the PCC and Church warden for several years, Ken has quietly and efficiently organised most of the repair and maintenance work as well as the day to day running of the church – no mean task as I have found out since bad health forced him to cut down. We cannot thank Ken and Ruth enough

16 for hosting the annual Fete in their beautiful garden for several years and they have always supported every village event. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to know Ken – such a wonderful gentleman – he will be sorely missed by everyone. June and July are looking to be much quieter months. The Village Hall Committee will be holding their AGM on June 20th at 8pm in the Village Hall. Do come along and give us your views? Pub Nights have continued to be popular but we would like to explore alternative ideas to involve a greater number of villagers – we need your suggestions. Jenny Lockwood Dates for your diary: Friday June 7th – Pub Night with food from 7pm Thursday June 20th – Village Hall AGM at 8pm Friday July 5th – Village BBQ at Kath& Tom’s from 7pm Can you help? Are there any residents of Pyrton/Watlington who remember Ellen Wright? She was born in Kite Cottage, Pyrton on the 29th October 1921. She was the only child of William and Ellen Wright.

Her daughters, Alison Jones and Penny Butler, would welcome the opportunity to share a coffee and conversation regarding Ellen.

If you remember Ellen and would like to share your memories you can email Alison on: [email protected]

17 A LOCAL DIMENSION TO AN INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM

Blenheim Films based in Shirburn, Oxfordshire has teamed up with Academy award winning actor Jeremy Irons who lives in Watlington to produce the highly acclaimed documentary feature film Trashed that deals graphically with the pressing issues surrounding waste and sustainability.

Candida Brady who founded Blenheim Films in 1996 undertook two years of research and filming before Trashed was premiered at Cannes in 2012.

Since then it has been seen at important events and festivals in many different parts of the world. It won Special Jury Prize at Tokyo International Film Festival and Best Documentary at FIFE in Paris.

Trashed is a global conversation led by Jeremy Irons, which details the issues of waste. Jeremy looks at the problems we are creating by burning, burying and dumping our plastic waste.

He talks to scientists, campaigners, farmers and more to find out what is happening and what is being done to improve the situation. From individuals who have changed their lives and produce almost no waste, to increasing anti-waste legislation, to an entire city which is now virtually waste-free,

Jeremy discovers that change is not only essential, but happening.

As Jeremy travels the world on a voyage of discovery the film captures him in some of the ghastliest polluted sites that one could possibly imagine, and the shock of what he sees and witnesses shows clearly in his face, in his observations and in the questions he asks.

18 The brilliant filming and Jeremy’s superb articulation of the damage being done to our world – on land and in the sea - by the dumping of huge amounts of waste leaves the viewer shocked and almost stunned with disbelief. The film successfully communicates the message that all of us need to take ownership of this problem and in a special appeal to the readers of this parish magazine Jeremy Irons has written: “I beg people to download it and watch it and see how they can change their lifestyles to make a difference”.

The trailer of the film can be viewed at www.trashedfilm.com www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UM73CEvwMY www.vimeo.com/ondemand/trashed/41514228 The film’s website, amongst other things also gives practical steps that we can all take to lessen the problem. These can be viewed at www.trashedfilm.com/tenthings.php

20 This the latest Watlington Policing Neighbourhood Crime Advice Update from PCSO Diane Greenwood

With summer fast approaching Neighbourhood team are reminding residents and those visiting the area to protect their homes and cars from opportunist thieves. With the warmer weather residents are more likely to leave windows and doors open giving the thieves plenty of opportunities, even a small window is not safe to leave as thieves can wriggle through any gap larger than the size of a human head.

Remember also sheds and garages lock tools and ladders away so that thieves cannot use them to break in to their home.

We are also urging motorists to ensure their cars are secure when they leave them and that nothing is left on display.

Car crime nationally is decreasing, but there is still a need to be vigilant and take precautions. Make these precautions part of your routine and you will decrease your risk of becoming a victim:

• Remove all items of value from your vehicle when you park • Lock doors and close windows

Over the past couple of years sat Nav’s have been a favourite for car criminals, who can sell them on to handlers very easily and get a good price for them. If you have a Sat Nav and plan to use it officers make the following suggestions:

• Remove your Sat Nav from the vehicle when it is being left unattended • Remove the cradle/Sat Nav holder from the windscreen and use a duster to wipe away the tell tale marks from the windscreen

21 Friends of St Leonard’s Church News Lych Gate Restoration Project

We were delighted a very generous £1600 was given in donations at last year’s Christmas Tree Festival towards the restoration of the historic Lych Gates and the finial on the roof. Following thorough investigation it was found the repair of the gates would be a false economy and therefore new replacement gates and finial are needed. The restoration will entail making new oak gates and a finial replicating the original design. It is hoped the exsisting ironwork will be refurbished and used with the new gates. The work has been put out to tender and we are currently awaiting detailed quotes. We are indebted to Raymond Jackson for his invaluable advice and work progressing this very important project and we look forward to the start of the restoration which will greatly enhance the entrance to St Leonard’s Church.

Christmas Tree Festival 2013 December 7th - December 21st It is hard to believe that 2013 is our fifth annual Christmas Tree Festival and we are so pleased that with the enormous support of our community the Festival has gone from strength to strength and become a greatly enjoyed festive event for all age groups, families and friends. We hope the Grand Opening on Saturday December 7th will finish with a special lantern parade, the inspiration of Emily Cooling, a local talented artist. The lantern parade will go through Watlington with lanterns made by children and students from Watlington Primary School and Icknield Community College together with residents from the Sanctuary Care Home.

Our theme this year is “Tell me a Story”. Well loved stories from here and around the world can be chosen. We provide the Christmas trees and put them up in church for you to decorate so all you have do is design and make the decorations and provide the tree lights! If you or your family would like to decorate a Christmas tree please get in touch by September at the latest by email at [email protected] or tel 01491 612788

This was an increase of over 5% from 2012, a great result considering the economic situation. Barbara Williamson and I would like to thank all the collectors who braved the bad weather, and all who contributed to the excellent total.

Running; walking; keep fit; yoga; aerobics; pilates; judo; Tai chi; Gym workouts

Because all our bodies are different we are physically not all suited to the same exercise regimes. People with problem backs may need to exercise standing up. People in wheel chairs need ‘sitting’ exercises, and so on and so on. Over the next few editions therefore, we will explore the many different kinds of exercise classes available in Watlington and will start with Tai Chi. I understand Balance and co-ordination soon start to improve for those whose bodies feel more comfortable doing a gentle, relaxing Standing exercise. - Editor The Health Benefits of Tai Chi -China’s ancient internal system of moving meditation- Ever wondered what is the single biggest cause of sickness in the UK? Stress! Which can manifest itself... in many ways --depression-chronic anxiety states -high blood pressure - heart disease-addictive disorders -cardiovascular disease - some cancers - increased rate of ageing -migraine headaches How do we go about reducing stress in our everyday lives? One simple way is to learn how to RELAX! Relaxation = no tension = no stress = no anxiety. It’s a simple formula, but it takes regular guided practise to help make a relaxed state become your default setting. Eventually through regular practise of the slow, graceful and continuous movements Tai Chi is known for, a sense of tranquillity from deep within emerges. Practised by over 200 million people in China, (half of all participants take up Tai Chi between the ages of 50 and 80), it keeps everything inside you healthy, from the smallest muscles to ligaments, joints, bodily fluids, vertebrae and internal organs. Call 07505 033 568 for information on your local class.

Tai Chi Classes in Watlington China’s ancient internal system of moving meditation I teach people to use their bodies properly Learning correct Breathing and Posture will teach you how to relax and, as a result, health greatly improves - as does strength and balance Tai Chi specialises in relaxing and regulating the central nervous system, releasing physical and emotional stress, and promoting mental and emotional well-being. 29 30 Good Friday Activity Morning

A rather last minute idea, a couple of quick conversations at the school gate, a flurry of emails and the Methodist Church Kidz Church and St. Leonard’s Mustard Seeds together decided to organise a morning of Easter-themed activities on Good Friday morning with less than a week to do it! Could it possibly be done?

Well, it turned out to be a great success! Over 40 children came, bringing with them around 30 parents and carers, and together with various helpers and clergy, about 80 of us packed into the Methodist Church for a morning of fun and crafts. We made everything from woven palm leaves and decorated wine glasses, to edible Easter bonnets, Easter cards and chocolate nests! Local artist Rachel Gill helped the children to make a wonderful Easter collage, showing the hill at Calvary and the tomb in the garden, surrounded by lots of beautiful flowers.

We then had a short service, listening to the Easter story, and finished up with cups of tea and hot cross buns.

Many thanks go to all those who helped to make it such a fantastic morning, and to all the children and parents who came and joined in - it was wonderful to see so many there. We hope to do something similar later on in the year, maybe around Harvest time, so watch this space for more information, or get in touch if you would like to help!
