Five-Times-Great-Grandparents to G D Audcent

The Early Life of Jacques BEAUGENDRE: He was born and baptised on 13 February 1742 at Bouffry (Loir et Cher). He was the son of Charles BEAUGENDRE (a farm labourer and small 1 holder), and Marguerite CHERET. For godparents he had Jacques DE LANDES and Anne CONNEAU, and neither of them knew how to sign their names.

The BEAUGENDRE family had lived at Bouffry since at least 1709, and in the adjacent parish of Bourguérin (today Droué) since at least the 1630s. Their maternal side ancestors had lived in the locality since at least the 1480s.

His father died in 1747 leaving Charles fatherless at the age of only five years. His mother then remarried. It seems he was brought up by his mother and step-father at nearby Ruan (today Ruan- sur-Egvonne). Although his ancestors had lived in the locality for hundreds of years, he decided to move away, first going to live in city of Chartres (parish of Sainte Foy). Then - by 1774 - settling in the town of Châteaudun, some 19 kilometres to the east of his childhood home (where his mother still lived).2

Jacques’s baptism at Bouffry in 1742

The Early Life of Anne Marguerite MARTIN: She was born in the town of Châteaudun, and baptised there in the eglise de La Madeleine on 1 March 1755, the daughter of Francois MARTIN

1 Proof of his parentage is (i) his baptism in the parish registers of Bouffry (Loir et Cher) and (ii) his acte de décès in 1810, which states the date and place of his birth, and the names of parents. 2 His acte de marriage records that he was formerly of the ville de Ruan in the diocese of , and also of the parish of Ste Foy in the ville de Chartres. (jardinier - gardener) and his wife Marguerite GARNIER (or GARRIER). For godparents she had Pierre DAUPHIN and Marguerite PHILIPPE, both residents of the parish of La Madeleine. Her parents died when she was young, and Pierre BOURGOGNE (probably her maternal uncle) became her legal guardian (tuteur).

Marguerite’s baptism at Châteaudun in 1755

The Married Life of Jacques and Anne Marguerite: They were married on 7 February 1774 in the eglise de St Lubin (opposite) at Châteaudun. Banns were read on three preceeding Sundays in the churches of St Lubin at Châteaudun, Sainte Foy at Chartres and at Ruan. The wedding was celebrated in the presence, and with the consent, of Jacques’ mother and the bride’s guardian (Pierre BOURGOGNE). Also present were Jacques’s half-brother (Pierre GANCHE), and Anne Marguerite’s brother (Jean Louis MARTIN), her aunt Françoise GARNIER (or GARRIER - wife of Florent BERNERON) and others.

Jacques was often described in the parish registers as a marchand. Between 1776 and 1778 he was described more specifically as a marchand de poterie (pottery merchant). However, at the time of his death in 1810 he was described as a marchand de bois (timber merchant).

Jacques and Anne Marguerite were sufficiently prosperous to own property in Châteaudun and at nearby Chapelle de Noyer.

Jacques and Anne Marguerite lived in the town of Châteaudun, where their children were baptised in the eglise de St Lubin between 1774 and 1792:

1. Marguerite Anthoinete BEAUGENDRE. AND HIS WIFE Marguerite CHERET c1719 - 1779

Six-Times-Great-Grandparents to G D Audcent

The Early Life of Charles BEAUGENDRE: He was born c1709 (aged 38 at his death in 1747), 5 the son of François BEAUGENDRE and Jeanne PÉAN. He was probably baptised at Bouffry, where his parents were living around this date, but where the registers are missing for the relevant period. By the time of his marriage in 1740 he had moved just 5 kilometres way to nearby Boisgasson.

Charles was still legally a minor when his father died. Bartelemi BEAUGENDRE was therefore appointed as his legal guardian (tuteur).

The Early Life of Marguerite CHERET: She was born c1719 (being aged 60 at death in 6 1779), the daughter of Léonard CHERET (farm labourer, journalier) and Louise AUGER. She was probably baptised in the parish of Langey (where her parents wed in 1708), but where the registers are missing for the relevant period.

The Married Life of Charles and Marguerite: They were married on 11 January 1740 at Boisgasson (Eure-et-Loir), a village within 5 kilometres of both Bouffry and Langey. Banns were read in the parish churches of Boisgasson, Ruan and Fontaine-Raoul.7 The marriage took place with the permission of Charles’s guardian (Bartelemi BEAUGENDRE) and Marguerite’s father.8

On 21 February 1740 Charles witnessed the burial of his father-in-law, Léonard CHERET, at Ruan (today Ruan-sur-Egvonne). He did not sign the parish register, having declared that he could not write (illiteracy was not unknown within the family. Indeed, his great-uncle François DE DENIAU, ecuyer, Sieur de Garenne, had also been illiterate not withstanding his noble status).

Soon after his wedding Charles moved back to Bouffry, the rural parish in which his parents had once lived and where own son was baptised in 1742.

5 Proof of his parentage is his acte de marriage, which names them both. 6 Proof of her parentage is her acte de marriage, which names them both, and her baptism. Also, the burial of her father at Ruan-sur-Egvonne on 21 February 1740, which had Charles Beaugendre as a witness. 7 The acte de mariage is preserved in the registers deposited in the Mairie de Boisgasson (which have been copied and indexed by the Cercle de Recherches Généalogiques du Perche-Gouet), but is missing from the duplicate register (collection de greffe) published on-line by the Archives departmenales (reference 3 E 044/1). The latter is incomplete and contains gaps for certain years. 8 It was common for the consent of parents or guardians to be recorded in the acte de mariage, even when the bride or groom was no longer a minor – such as at the marriage of Charles son Jacques in 1774. Despite being descended from the ancient nobility (through his grandmother, demoiselle Françoise Denise DE DENIAU) Charles was a commoner. Moreover, the family had fallen on hard times, having become somewhat impoverished over the course of three generations.9 Charles therefore worked on the land as a farm labourer and small holder, being described as a labourer (journalier à Lorière) in 1742 and as a small holder (bordager) at the burial of his widow. Being illiterate meant he was only suited to manual work.

The family had prospered through trade during the sixteenth century and and rose in social status, with the result that Charles’s great-grandfather had lived as noble duing the 1660s, and and his had grandfather married into the ancient nobility in 1682. That brought prestige to the family but probably little wealth, and the family’s preference for farming, rather than education, commerce or the professions, gradually depeleted their resources over time. The situation was probably exacerbated by the fact that several successive generations of the family suffered the loss of their fathers at a young age.

Charles and Marguerite had only one known child before he died when still a relatively young man:

1. Jacques BEAUGENDRE: He was born and baptised on 13 February 1742 at Bouffry. For godparents he had Jacques DE LANDES (this would be the Jacques DE LANDES, fermier, who was buried at Bouffy 21 June 1758) and Anne CONNEAU. He married Ann Marguerite MARTIN in 1774. Ancestors of the AUDCENT family.

Charles died on 12 August 1747 after receiving the last rites. He was aged around 38 years. The burial followed the next day at Bouffry in the presence of his widow, as well as Leonard CHERET (brother-in-law) and several other family members.

Burial of Charles at Bouffry on 13 August 1747

Marguerite survived her first-husband by thirty years. Widowed and with a young son to raise, she was married for a second time to Pierre GANCHE (bordager - smallholder, who died by July 1779. She had another son by her second husband:10

9 The documentary evidence provided clear and unambiguous proof that Charles was decended from the noble Deniau (in particular his acte de marriage in 1707, combined with his parents acte de marriage in 1742 and his grandparentd acte de marriage in 1682). 10 The fact that she remarried Pierre Ganche is stated in the acte de décès of her son Charles in 1810.  Pierre GANCHE. He was present at the wedding of his half-brother (Jacques BEAUGENDRE) in at Châteaudun in 1774, and at his mother’s burial, also at Châteaudun, in 1779. Noted as a berger of the parish of Romilly in 1779.

In later life Marguerite lived at Pont Blossier, a small hamlet within the parish of Ruan, as this was noted as her place of residence when she was buried. She died on 27 July 1779 aged sixty years after receiving the last rites, having gone to stay with her eldest son Jacques at Châteaudun. She was buried the following day in the cimetière de Ceans, in the parish of St Lubin, at Châteaudun. She was buried in the presence of both her sons (Jacques BEAUGENDRE and Pierre GANCHE). The acte de mariage is preserved in the registers deposited in the Mairie de Boisgasson (which have been copied and indexed by the Cercle de Recherches Généalogiques du Perche-Gouet), but is missing from the duplicate register (collection de greffe) published on-line by the Archives departmentales (reference 3 E 044/1) as the latter are incomplete and contain gaps for certain years. Seven-Times-Great-Grandparents to G D Audcent

The Early Life of François BEAUGENDRE: He was the son of Isaac (Jean) BEAUGENDRE and 11 demoiselle Françoise Denise DE DENIAU. Details of his birth and baptism are not known, but he was born c1684 (certainly between Spring 1683 and early 1686). All that can be said is that the baptism did not take place in same parish as his parents’ marriage.

François was still an infant (less than three years old) when his father died in 1685. Joseph BROISSIN was therefore appointed as his legal guardian (tuteur) (this would be Joseph BROISSIN, sieur de la Grange, who lived at Touche Gonthier in the parish of Lignieres, husband of François’s aunt Magdeleine).

He wase was living in the parish of La Chapelle-Vicomtesse in 1707, at the time of his marriage (where his maternal-side ancestors had lived since 1481).

The Early Life of Jeanne PÉAN: She was born and baptised on 28 December 1689 at La Bazoche-Gouët (Eure-et-Loir), and brought up there. She was the daughter of Jean PÉAN and 12 Louise BOIS. For godparents she had Jean Baptiste DOUBLET, priest and curé of La Bazoche-Gouet, and Louisse LAUMEY, wife of Jean COUSSANCE, marchand.

The Married Life of François and Jeanne: They were married on 25 July 1707 at Saint- Agil (Loir-et-Cher) in the presence of Joseph BROISSIN (“son tuteur”) and Francois HACHARD (“son oncle”) (note - both men were married to his aunts, and had been present at the burial of his grandfather in 1673), and “sa mere”. (Nb. his father - who had died 22 years - earlier - was incorrectly named as “Jean” BEAUGENDRE in the acte de marriage).

Following their wedding the François and Jeanne settled at Bouffry (although their first-born child was actually born at La Bazoche-Gouët, where Jeanne went to stay with her mother for the birth). The family connection with the parish of Bouffy would last another forty years, until his grandson was burried there in 1747.

François was described as the sieur de la Montière in his acte de marriage, suggesting he was probably a farmer. La Moinetière was a farm in the parish Chauvigny, about 4 kilometres south of Bouffry.

11 Proof of his parentage is his acte de marriage, which names them both. 12 Proof of her parentage is her acte de marriage, which names them both, and her baptism. Found with thanks to Eliane Droucheau (Geneanet - gsk3) http://gw.geneanet.org/gsk3?lang=en&v=PEAN&m=N. The marriage of François and Jeanne at St Agil in 1707 (frame 38/222)

François and Jeanne had at least two children:

1. Jeanne BEAUGENDRE: She was born and baptised at La Bazoche-Gouët on 24 April 1708 having for godparents Jacques BARBÉ, marchand, and Magdelaine MERCIER of La Bazoche-Gouët;

2. Charles BEAUGENDRE: He was probably baptised at Bouffry (where his parents lived, but where the registers are missing for the relevant period). He married Marguerite CHERET at Boisgasson in 1740. Ancestors of the AUDCENT family.

On 13 May 1708 François BEAUGENDRE became godfather to Susanne COUDRE and signed the parish register at Bouffry (frame 97/361):

Nothing more is known of François and Jeanne, although there were both deceased by the time of their son’s wedding in 1740. Isaac BEAUGENDRE 1649 - 1685 Sieur de la Moinetière

AND HIS WIFE Françoise Denise DE DENIAU 1658 – 1706

Eight-Times-Great-Grandparents to G D Audcent

The Early Life of Isaac BEAUGENDRE: He was the son of noble homme Isaac BEAUGENDRE, 13 seigneur de la Triboudière, and Marguerite GOISLARD. He was born at Bourguérin (today Droué) on 6 November 1649, having for godparents Pierre OUDINEAU and Marie 14 LEBRETHON. Both his father and his maternal grandfather had faithfully served members of the royal family, in the domestic households of Gaston, Duke of Orleans (brother of King Louis XIII) and the Queen (Anne of Austria, wife of Louis XIII).

François was twenty-three and when his father died in 1673. He was therefore still legally a minor and it was necessary for guardians (tuteurs) to be appointed for him and his younger brother. An acte of emancipation was subsequently passed, recognising the ending of the guardianship arrangement - this legal document identified him as “fils d'Isaac Beaugendre, seigneur de La Tribaudiére, et de Marguerite Goislard”. The document was preserved amongst the GOISLARD family papers and is now in the Archives départementales de Loir-et- Cher (Nb. the Inventaire Sommaire states that the acte d’emancipation was dated 1672, but this cannot be right as his father died in 1673).15

Isaac was known as the sieur de La Moinetière, deing described as such at his marriage in 1682.

Isaac’s father was a noble homme, indicating that although he was a commoner he lived as a noble. This, together with the family’s prestigious service to the royal family, was sufficient to secure a marriage between Isaac and a young lady from a local family of noble status -

13 Proof of his parentage is his acte de marriage, which names them both. He is also identified as a son in his father’s burial record in 1673. 14 Information on his baptism is curtesy of Pascal Leroy (pleroy99) http://gw.geneanet.org/pleroy99?lang=en;pz=pascal+jean+louis;nz=leroy;ocz=0;p=isaac;n=beaugendre;oc=1. 15 Inventaire sommaire des Archives départementales anterieures à 1790, Loir-et-Cher: archives civiles; series C, D, E et E supplément (1887) pages 73-74; Serie E; Titres de familles; E332 (Liasse.) 32 pièces , parchemin: 1544-1672 - Goislard - Vente : par Jacquin et Simon Bézard à Jean Goislard, marchand de draps, d'un quartier de vigne à La Thibaudière ; - par Laurent Sallé, cordonnier, à noble homme Pierre Goislard, sieur de Repussey, anciennement fourrier de la Reine, de terres au Cormier-Teroz (1550) ; - par Antoine Besnard à Jean Goislard, marchand à Chicheray, de diverses pièces de terre à Pezou ; — par Françoise Papineau, veuve Cueillette, à Jean et Pierre Goislard, d'une boisselée de terre à la fontaine Sainte-Ouzille, à Pezou ; quittance de profits de fief de ladite terre , signée de Marie de Bourbon, dame de (1584); - par François Quarat, à Pierre Goislard, d'une demi boisselée de terre à Pezou ; quittance des profits de fief signée de Marie de Bourbon, dame de Renay; — par Jean Goislard, sieur de Lépau, à Michel Goislard, praticien, de trois quartiers de vigne, à Pezou, relevant du fief de Mont-Henry (1613). — Emmancipation d'Isaac Beaugendre, fils d'Isaac Beaugendre, seigneur de La Thibaudiére, et de Marguerite Goislard (1672). although apparently of modest means and education (both his wife and brotjher-in-law were illiterate).

The Early Life of Françoise Denise DE DENIAU: She was baptised 3 May 1658 at Le Plessis-Dorin (Loir-et-Cher), the daughter of Louis DE DENIAU, ecuyer, sieur de La Garenne, 16 and Renée DES PIERRES. For godparents she had Messire Claude DE COURTARVEL and demoiselle Françoise DE BROSSARD.

Françoise Denise was of noble birth and she was therefore addressed as Damoiselle (in her son’s acte de marriage) and as Dame (at her burial). However, her family were probably not particularly weathly nor well educated (she was illiterate, as was her brother). She was descended from several faimilies of the ancient noble lineage - including the DES PIERRES, DE COURTARVEL and DE COUTANCE families. According to some sources she was even descended from English and French royalty, but the veracity of this descent has not been established.

The short marriage produced only one known child:

1. François BEAUGENDRE: Details of his birth and baptism are not known (it was not in same parish as his parents’ marriage), but he was living in the village of La Chapelle Vicomtesse at the time of his marriage. He married Jeanne PÉAN on 25 July 1707 at Saint-Agil (Loir-et-Cher) in the presence of Joseph BROISSIN (“son tuteur”) and Francois HACHARD. Ancestors of the AUDCENT family.

Isaac died within three years of his wedding. He was buried on 26 March 1685 at Fontaine- Raoul aged 35 years. Joseph BROISSIN was then appointed as guardian to his son.

The marriage was bewteeen Isaac Beaugendre, siuer de Moutierie aged 32 of the parish of ..?.. and Denise Francoise Deniau, aged 22, of the parish of Le Plessis-Dorin. 18 Note - there was also a marriage at Droué on 29/01/1671 between Jacques Beaugendre (son of the late David Beaugendre, labourer, and Jacquine Meudville) of the parish of Poilay and Magdeleine Deniau (daughter of Nicolas and niece Pierre), of this parish. Magdeleine was baptised at Droué on 5 Feb 1650 and had as godmother, Marguerite Goislard, femme de noble home Isaac Beaugendre. Françoise Denise (noted as the widow of Sr Beaugendre) was married for a second time on 29 November 1687 at Chauvigny to Mr Pierre Bertrand DE LUNEL, Sieur du Pavillon, (he was the son of Bertrand and Madeleine DE GRAFFARD).

The Early Life of Isaac BEAUGENDRE: Isaac was the son of honourable homme Alexandre 20 BEAUGENDRE, merchant (marchand) and honorable femme Jacquine CHAVIGNY. He was born c1593 (being 80 years old at death in 1673), but details of his baptism are not known.

Isaac was a bourgeois and his signature was that of an educated gentleman. His was addressed as noble homme, indicating that although he was a commoner he lived as a noble. He was frequently described as a noble homme, such in 1638 when becoming a godfather, as well as at his wedding and burial (in his acte de mariage and acte de sépulture). He was not a true noble and therefore never used the title ecuyer.

He entered royal service in the household of Gaston, Duke of Orléans (1608-1660). The Duke was known at court by the traditional honorific ‘Monsieur’, being the son of King Henry IV and brother of King Louis XIII. Isaac entered service in the Duke’s household by 1638, at which time the Duke was hier to the throne. The Duke was a powerful royal prince and constantly engaged in political intrigue at court, with the result that he repeatedly fell in and out of favour with the King and his ministers, until eventually exiled to Blois in 1652.

Issac served the Duke for over sixteen years as a valet de garde-robe, meaning he looked after the prince’s wardrobe, clothing and shoes. He was first recorded as a valet to the duke in 1638 and continued to serve in the duke’s household until at least 1654: in 1638 (on standing as godfather) he was described as vallet de garde robe de son Monseigneur, in 1642 (as his marriage) as vallet de garde robe de son Monsieur, in 1650 (at his daughter’s baptism) as vallet de garde robe de son Monseigneur le duc d’Orelans, in 1654 (at his son’s baptism) as vallet de garde robes de son Altesse royale and in 1673 (at his burial) as officier de feu Altesse le duc d’Orléans.

Isaac’s role, which brought him close to a senior member of the royal family, was a prestigious and trusted position within the duke’s domestic household. Costume at court was not merely a matter of fashion, but an important signifier of wealth, power and status. Inappropriate or shabby attire would not only demean the courtier but would insult the monarch. As a valet Issac would have ensured the appropriate items of clothing were available according to the occasion and he waould have overseen their care, storage, repair and cleaning.

20 Proof of his parentage is his acte de marriage, which names them both. Isaac would undoubtedly have performed his duties as valet at the Louvre in Paris, which was the principle royal residence and focus of court affairs at time. However, from 1652 onwards he would have served his master at the Château of Blois, this being the royal palace to which the troublesome Duke had been banished.

The valets served on rotation for a quarter of each year, meaning that Isaac could spend most of his time on his manor at La Triboudière in the parish of Bourguérin. He was there in 1638 when he became godfather to Louis, son of Pierre PEAY and Jacquette AUBURT (this being the first occasion he was described as a valet to the Duke of Orleans).21 He was also godfather to his nephew Isaac, son of François DUVALLET and Madeleine BEAUGENDRE, who was baptised at Bourguérin on 6 November 1626. Issace signed the register but there was no reference to his occupation at the time.

It must have been through his service at court that Isaac met his wife, as her father served in the royal household of the Queen.

The Early Life of Marguerite GOISLARD: She was the daughter of noble homme Michel 22 GOISLARD and Louise CHAUFFOURNEAU. Her father was an officier in the royal household of the Queen, as a Fourrier des Logis du Corps de la Reyne.

The Married Life of Isaac and Marguerite: They were married on 30 September 1642 at Pezou (Loir-et-Cher).23 Isaac would have been almost sixty years old, and considerably older than his bride.

Isaac was known as the sieur de la Triboudière,24 and resided near the village of Bourguérin (which in combination with Boisseleau has become the present day village of Droué).25 The BEAUGENDRE family were known in this locailty back to at least 1556, when a Noël 26 BEAUGENDRE was the curé de Boisseleau. La Triboudière was a farm to the east of Bourguérin, and around 4 kilomtres north of Bouffry (where later generations of the famiy lived). Around 1656 (sometime between 1655 and 1658) “Isaac Beaugendre, sieur de la Triboudière” of the paroisse de Bourguérin is recorded as receiving the sum of 22 livres de

The marriage was therefore recorded in the registers of both Pezou and Droué, with the bride’s name misread as Graffart by the indexers (the brides signature at Pezou was definitely Goislard). 24 La Tribaudière (not to be confused with la Thiboudière), Cne de Droué. The present church at Droué is the ancient church of Bourguérin, which was perhaps the former chapel of the manor house at Bourguérin. Bourguérin and Boisseleau shared the same curé, who resided at Boisseleau. Bourguérin was served by a vicar. In the eighteenth century the two parishes amalgamated into a single village, called Droué. 26 Archives départementales d'Eure-et-Loir, Inventaire sommaire, Série E, tome 2, page 372: E. 3001.
