Protecting the environment is a central part of what the Waita- kere Ranges Local Board wants to focus on. The board has floated six priorities to guide it over the next three years, and has asked for public feedback. Chairman Greg Presland said the draft plan sets out the board’s key areas of interest. ‘‘Our challenge is to address the needs of all, with a limited budget and resources, over a huge geographical landscape,’’ he said. For the coming financial year, the board had operating funding of $9.34 million on top of $1.46 million for spending on capital projects. The draft plan said the first outcome the board desired was to get the Waitakere Ranges Heri- tage Area recognised as a ‘‘taonga for the people of Auckland’’. ‘‘We will advocate to the governing body to elevate its status and prioritise resourcing actions that will protect the heri- tage area in the long term,’’ it said. Peter Roberts loved owning birds so much that he decided to breed them. The Henderson resident had owned a range of birds over 44 years, but had only bred budgies. ‘‘I was given a sparrow when I was young and it died. I was pretty upset and mum and dad went to the pet shop and got me a pair of budgies. That’s where it all started,’’ he said. ‘‘I always come back to budgies.’’ Roberts said he breeds this par- ticular bird because it is so easy to do so. They were fed every second day and had their aviaries cleaned on weekends. ‘‘They are easy birds to look after. They are easy to breed. We have bred about 60 chicks this year. They are just easy to care [for] and I just like the parrot-type birds,’’ he said. Seeing new eggs hatch was Roberts’ favourite part of having the birds. ‘‘It’s exciting when the chicks come out of the eggs to see what colour they are and you see mum and dad feed them, it’s really neat.’’ Eggs take about 18 days to Peter Roberts says he loves breeding budgies because of how easy they are to care for. Auckland Council is rejecting claims a restructuring process for libraries will result in ‘‘rolling closures’’. Community group Love Our Libraries, which originally tried to stop the restructure, released a statement on Monday criticising Auckland Coun- cil’s Fit for the Future programme. The pro- gramme was designed to evolve Auckland’s libraries to better meet the growing demand for digital and online services. As part of the programme, Auckland Libraries underwent a restructure which resulted in volun- tary redundancies from 74 staff in March. Many of its remaining 926 staff were required to reapply for their jobs. Love Our Libraries spokeswoman Julia Schiller said under-staffing was impacting services and could lead to shortened library hours. Schiller said she was aware of 71 shifts needing to be filled by workers in July. She said library managers had been asked to consider what programmes or special events could be cut, due to reduced staff hours. Auckland Libraries general manager Mirla Edmundson said no programmes would be cut, opening hours wouldn’t change and services hadn’t been impacted. ‘‘There will not be any rolling closures. This is purely speculation on behalf of Love our Libraries,’’ Edmundson said. summerset.co.nz Edmundson said there were some temporary staffing gaps because some libraries had staff opt for voluntary redundancy or take roles in differ- ent libraries. An Auckland woman claims her rental home was burgled because the windows didn’t close. Kumeu resident Kathy Pearson had been paying $550 a week for her four-bedroom house. The house had been broken into twice, the first time in Octo- ber, and she blamed window latches that wouldn’t shut. Because the windows were not secure, Pearson’s insurance wouldn’t pay out for the stolen items. So she used her rent money to pay for them instead.
