  • Kauto Star, a Steeplechasing Legend1 Dr Katherine Dashper and Dr
‘Like a hawk among house sparrows’: Kauto Star, a steeplechasing legend1 Dr Katherine Dashper and Dr Thomas Fletcher, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK The concept of ‘icon’ has been applied to numerous athletes as a result of their sporting achievements, likeable public personas, and stories of triumph, resilience and courage. The cultural role of the horse as icon, hero, celebrity and national luminary, however, is lacking within the literature. In this article we extend this human concept to apply to the racehorse Kauto Star, who was heralded by many as the saviour of British racing in the early twenty‐first century. We argue that the narrative surrounding Kauto Star had all the essential ingredients for the construction of a heroic storyline around this equine superstar: his sporting talent; his flaws and ability to overcome adversity; his ‘rivalry’ with his stable mate; his ‘connections’ to high profile humans in the racing world; and, the adoration he received from the racing public. Media representations are key elements in the construction of sporting narratives, and the production of heroes and villains within sport. In this paper we construct a narrative of Kauto Star, as produced through media reports and published biographies, to explore how this equine star has been elevated beyond the status of ‘animal’, ‘racehorse’ or even ‘athlete’ to the exalted position of sporting icon. Key words: Animals, celebrity, equine sport, hero, icon, media representation, racing Introduction Sports lend themselves to the production and presentation of cultural icons. The status of a sporting icon is usually conferred on men and women for their performances on a field of play.2 However, is iconicity defined by performances alone? Over the last three/four decades there has been a proliferation of writings about the achievements of certain sports men and women.

  • Bulletin Book Extracts
Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.

  • November 2014 Edition of the Donn Mcclean Racing Newsletter
Welcome to the November 2014 edition of the Donn McClean Racing newsletter. Looking ahead These are the golden weekends of the National Hunt season. Morgiana Hurdle/Paddy Power Gold Cup weekend has just passed, and the schedule over the next few weeks now, leading up to the end of the year, is just about as good as it gets: 22nd/23rd November: Ascot Hurdle, Betfair Chase, Troytown Chase 29th/30th November: Hennessy Gold Cup, Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, Drinmore Chase 6th/7th December: Tingle Creek Chase, John Durkan Chase 13th/14th December: December Gold Cup, International Hurdle 20th/21st December: Long Walk Hurdle, Ladbroke Hurdle 26th-29th December: King George VI Chase, Lexus Chase, Christmas Hurdle, Paddy Power Chase, Welsh Grand National Over the next few weeks, we are probably going to see Sprinter Sacre, Simonsig, Cue Card, Silviniaco Conti, Faugheen, The New One, Djakadam, Smad Place, Bobs Worth, Lord Windermere, Vautour, and just about every other top National Hunt horse in training. The six-week period that runs from now until the end of the calendar year is probably the most exciting six-week period of the season! Looking back After a good end to the Flat season, Private Clients of Donn McClean Racing have also made a good start to the National Hunt season. Open Eagle (advised ante post at 12/1) ran out an easy winner of the November Handicap at Doncaster to ensure that the Flat season ended on a high, and the National Hunt season got off to a good start with the Open meeting at Cheltenham last weekend.

  • Cheltenham Festival Winning Profiles 2017
Cheltenham Festival Winning Profiles 2017 (Races to be run Tuesday 14th March to Friday 17th March) www.againstthecrowd.co.uk Page 2 Key trends point to Festival winners The Cheltenham Festival represents the pinnacle of National Hunt racing. The G1 Championship races that take place at the venue every March are designed to find the best horses in specific divisions of the jump racing game. • The Champion Hurdle run on the Tuesday is designed to find the best 2-mile hurdler. • The Queen Mother Champion Chase is designed to find the best horse over the bigger obstacles at the minimum distance of 2-miles. The race is run on the Wednesday of the Festival • On Thursday Cheltenham Stages the Stayers’ Hurdle designed to find the best staying hurdler over a trip of 3-miles. • Thursday also plays host to the Ryanair Chase – a race which has become a Championship event for chasers specialising in a trip of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. • On the Friday of the Festival, we have the Gold Cup – the staying chasers’ Championship event run over 3 miles and 2 furlongs. These races are difficult to read. All the most talented horses in each division – at least those which are fit – tend to show up. All the major yards are represented. Every single runner is trying. Nothing is being saved for another day. The championship races are invariably run at a red-hot pace. This, in combination with the specific demands of the track, means that only horses at the top of their game, horses tuned to the moment and horses in receipt of luck in running, can prevail on the day.
