RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer uma tradução comentada para o português do Brasil do conto The other boat, do escritor inglês Edward Morgan Forster. A tradução é a primeira feita em português do conto, escrito entre os anos de 1957-8 e publicado postumamente em 1972. O conto é sobre um encontro erótico, homossexual e trágico entre dois personagens de classes e raças diferentes no início do século 20. A tese propõe tornar o texto visível, mais lido e discutido, contribuindo assim para a criação de um cânone mais inclusivo onde qualquer leitor se reconheça independente de raça, identidade sexual, nacionalidade e língua Palavras-chave: Tradução comentada. RÉSUMÉ Le but de ce travail est celui de faire une traduction commentée au portugais brésilien de la nouvelle The other boat, de l'écrivain anglais Edward Morgan Forster. Cette traduction est la première faite en portugais de cette nouvelle. Elle a été écrite entre les années 1957-8 et publié à titre posthume en 1972. L'histoire est celle d'une rencontre érotique, homosexuelle et tragique entre deux personnages de différentes classes et races au début du 20e siècle. La thèse se propose de rendre le texte plus visible, plus lu et discuté, en apportant, ainsi, des contributions pour créer un canon plus inclusif à partir du quel le lecteur se reconnaisse indépendamment de la race, de l'identité sexuelle, de la nationalité et de la langue. ABSTRACT The objective of this work is to do a commented translation into Brazilian Portuguese of Edward Morgan Forster's short story The other boat. This translation of the short story, written between 1957 and 1958, and published posthumously, is the first one into Portuguese. The short story is about an erotic, homosexual and tragic encounter between two characters of different social classes and races at the beginnning of the 20th century. The thesis proposes to make the text visible, much more read and discussed, thus contributing to the creation of a more inclusive canon, where any reader, regardless of race, sexual identity, nationality or language, can recgonize themselves. Ana Cristina César, Recuperação da Adolescência A primeira vez que li o conto de Forster em 1981, criei imediatamente um projeto de tradução do conto: porque todo mundo que eu conhecia então precisava também ler. Meus amigos que liam Giovanni quando sozinhos ou escondidos mesmo e me diziam que o livro era único precisavam saber que havia outros, que o conto também era trágico e que também era sobre aquele tipo de amor que ninguém ainda dizia que era mesmo amor mas outro nome que não sabiam dizer o que era isso que sentiam, essa coisa que por aqui, que por ali onde morávamos era melhor deixada em silêncio. Sabiam apenas que era mais que amizade e eu explicava que no conto tudo começava mesmo com amizade só acontecia uma alteração anos depois, dez anos depois, em outro barco1 mas ainda nesse lugar sem terra, sem chão, essa fluidez contínua, água por todos lados, até do lado de dentro dos olhos mas saindo, fluindo; uma alteridade quase feminina, eles precisavam ler para entender.     A Qualitative Study of the Role of Friendship in Late Adolescent and Young Adult Heterosexual Romantic Relationships Billy Kidd Walden University, Minneapolis, Mn Magy Martin Walden University, Minneapolis, Mn Don Martina Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio Abstract Friendship is considered one of the pillars of satisfying, long-term, romantic relationships and marriage. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the role of friendship in heterosexual romantic relationships. Eight single participants, ages 18 to 29, were selected from two West Coast metropolitan areas in the United States to explore whether or not friendship facilitates future long term relationships. Participants reported that friendship helped establish economic independence, adult identity and improved communication skills. Participants also reported that the development and stability of long term relationships was tenuous and temporal in their lives. Late adolescents and young adults in our study believed that their selection of partners was very different than their parents and that the success of their long term relationships was enhanced by a strong friendship with their partner. Keywords: friendship; adolescence; romantic relationships Certain psychosocial factors have been found to document that adult romantic affiliations are defined differently by the younger generation. There has been a sizable shift in sociocultural forces such as technological innovations, a globalized job market, constant mobility, shifting gender roles as well as the deinstitutionalization of marriage that influence late adolescent and young urban adult romantic relationships (Arnett, 2004, Coontz, 2006; Le Bourdais & Lapierre-Adamcyk, 2004). This process creates uncertainty in close relationships so that the traditional timelines and milestones for romantic relationships are seen as outdated (Collins & van Dulmen, 2006; Reitzle, 2007).

In their accounts, participants constructed versions of friendship (e.g., friends not having ulterior motives for their friendship) in many ways, while managing their own moral accountability. They also engaged in significant conversational work in order to construct friendship and romance as distinct relationship categories, addressing issues of sexual attraction and desire between friends, and partners. In doing so, they positioned themselves morally, drawing on the presumption of heterosexuality and the prescription of monogamy in romantic partnerships. At times (i.e., friend moments), participants performed their friendship by addressing each other directly and drawing on locally shared resources. They positioned themselves as insiders (i.e., friends), supported by the interviewer taking up a subject position as an outsider.

RUSBULT University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Received June 13, 1979 Two experiments were designed to test the adequacy of the investment model of developing relationships in predicting satisfaction with and commitment to ongo- ing associations. According to the investment model, attraction to and satisfaction with a relationship is a function of a comparison of the relationship outcome value (both rewards and costs) to the individual’s expectations, or comparison level. Commitment to a relationship is said to be a function not only of the relationship outcome value, but also the quality of the best available alternative and the magnitude of the individual’s investment in the relationship. The intrinsic or extrinsic investment of resources serves to increase commitment by increasing the costs of leaving the relationship. Thus, increases in investment size, decreases in alternative value, and increases in relationship value should increase commitment to an ongoing relationship. In Experiment 1, a role-playing study, commitment to relationships increased with intrinsic and extrinsic investment size and decreased with the value of alternatives, but was not appreciably affected by relation- ship costs. Satisfaction/attraction significantly increased as relationship costs decreased. In Experiment 2, a survey of ongoing romantic associations, satisfaction/attraction was predicted by relationship reward value and relationship cost value. Commitment to relationships increased as relationship reward value and investment size increased and as alternative value and relationship cost value decreased, although the effects of cost value were weak.

Sci Swinburne University B.A. Hons Swinburne University This thesis is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy for the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences Swinburne University of Technology August 2013 Abstract Few studies exist which describe the actual initiation and progression of new late-life romantic relationships, particularly within an Australian context. This is surprising, as it is likely that the dynamics of romance in later life differ from romance amongst younger adults. Previous research which has looked specifically at heterosexual older adults has largely described their sexual functioning rather than the meaning they give to their loving partnerships. Because of this dearth of research, little is known about late life dating and mating habits. This thesis attempts to fill this gap, by investigating romantic relationships which begin in later life – after divorce or widowhood, or for those who have never married – with a special focus on relationships which are mediated via online technology. It presents findings from qualitative semi-structured interviews with 45 older adults, aged 60 years of age and over residing in Australia. The findings show that the older adults in this study found new romantic partnerships as a consequence of their offline social activities and also by deliberately joining online dating websites. These partnerships were meaningful, important and sexually intimate. However, very few progressed to cohabitation or marriage, with most of the older adults preferring to date or live functionally separately, even when their relationships were long-term and committed, in order to avoid providing care-giving and instrumental support.
