Wood Department of Entomology and Applied Ecology, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19717 INTRODUCTION Subsocial behavior is the most primitive level of social interaction involving parents and offspring (79). Although preovipositional behaviors such as nest construction (48, 77) or various resource manipulations (10, 162) eventually benefit offspring, subsociality by definition is restricted to postovipositional parental behavior that promotes the survival, growth, and development of offspring (33). Insect parental adaptations comprise a continuum of care rang ing from passive egg guarding to an array of complex grooming, feeding, by PALCI on 04/18/09. For personal use only. protective, and nesting behaviors (for comprehensive reviews see 33, 54, 171). Although levels of complexity are diverse, parental care can be categorized into three primary behaviors: (a) those that physically protect the young from danger, (b) those that protect resources vital to offspring, and (c) those that facilitate offspringfeeding. The effectiveness of these behaviors in neutralizing or alleviating conditions detrimental to young is evidenced by their repeated Annu. Rev. Entomol. 1986.31:369-390. In the insects, parental behavior lies at the core of all levels of insect sociality and has arisen independently in at least 13 different orders (33). Wilson (172) has identified four environmental "prime movers" that create conditions favorable to the evolution of parental care: stable or structured environments, physically stressful environments, rich and ephemeral re sources, and predation. -

The biology of the family Coccinellidae has been sum- merized by Balduf 1935, Clausen 1940, Hagen 1962, and Hodek 1967. Hippodamia parenthesis and Hippodamia tredecimpunctata are two of the species of coccinellids which feed on potato infesting aphids in Maine. In attempting to determine the effect of these coccinellids on the populations of potato infesting aphids, it is necessary to know which other arthropods would serve as possible food sources. Lady beetles have certain food preferences, and the food source has an effect on de velopment. -

Qualitative and quantitative differences in prey are known to affect the life histories of predators. A laboratory study was used to evaluate the suitability of three aphid prey, Aphis gossypii, Aphis craccivora and Lipaphis erysimi, for the ladybird beetle, Anegleis cardoni (Weise). Development was fastest on A. gossypii followed by A. craccivora and L. erysimi. Percentage pupation, immature survival, adult weight and the growth index were all highest when reared on A. gossypii and lowest on L. erysimi. Simi- larly, oviposition period, lifetime fecundity and egg viability were all highest on a diet of A. gossypii, lowest on L. erysimi and inter- mediate on A. craccivora. Age-specific fecundity functions were parabolic. Adult longevity, reproductive rate and intrinsic rate of increase were all highest on A. gossypii and lowest on L. erysimi. Life table parameters reflected the good performance on A. gossypii and poor performance on L. erysimi. Estimates of individual fitness values for the adults reared on A. gossypii and A. crac- civora were similar and higher than that of adults reared on L. erysimi. Thus, the three species of aphid can all be considered essen- tial prey for A. -

ECOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENT Gargaphia decoris DRAKE (HEMIPTERA: TINGIDAE) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Science at Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand Cecilia María Falla 2017 ABSTRACT The Brazilian lace bug (Gargaphia decoris Drake (Hemiptera:Tingidae)) was released in New Zealand in 2010 for the biological control of the invasive weed woolly nightshade (Solanum mauritianum Scopoli (Solanaceae)). Currently there is scarce information about the potential effect of ecological factors on the establishment of this biological control agent. This study investigated: 1) the effect of maternal care and aggregation on nymphal survival and development; 2) the effect of temperature, photoperiod and humidity on G. decoris performance; and 3) the effect of light intensity on S. mauritianum and G. decoris performance. Maternal care and aggregation are characteristic behaviours of G. decoris. These behaviours have an adaptive significance for the offspring and are key determinants for the survival of the species under natural conditions. Maternal care is reported to increase the survival and development of offspring under field conditions, and higher aggregations to increase the survival of the offspring. However, in this study, maternal care negatively affected the survival and development of the offspring, and higher aggregations had no significant impact on offspring survival. -

Bell 1 Accepted August 16, 2005; revised July 13, 2005 Cooperative care of offspring is a hallmark of animal sociality, but it is un- clear how conflicts over care-giving effort are resolved in taxa that do not use dominance and physical force to induce cooperation in others. To ascertain if taxa without dominance-enforcing traits such as stings or biting mouth- parts show conflicts over offspring care, we used a lace bug (Heteroptera: Tingidae) that has communal guarding of young but lacks morphologies for dominance or coercion. In Leptobyrsa decora females oviposit communally and then aggressively guard communal broods from arthropod predators. Since guarding has mortality risks, we tested if individuals lower their own risk by behaving less aggressively than the partner guard. We show that effort towards protecting brood, and thus guard risk of death, is strongly positively correlated between guarding partners. This finding suggests that mechanisms other than dominance or coercion are used by L. decora to establish an equi- table and possibly conflict-minimizing distribution of care-giving effort.
