Mr. Charles Farrar, Executive Director International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Campus Avenue Oxford, Ohio 45 056

Dear Mr. Farrar:

As the administrative head of the College of Business at this university, it gives me great pleasure to recommend that Eta Delta Fraternity be granted a charter for membership in your international organization.

Eta Delta Fraternity is a very unique organization. Its membership includes many mature, married men who have demonstrated excep tional initiative, leadership and determination. Included in its thirty active members are some of the finest scholars within the college. To the best of my knowledge each man presents the personal attributes of which we can be proud.

During the short time Eta Delta has been in existence, its members

have formed strong and enduring fraternal bonds . Almost the entire membership will be in school for another year, thus the professional programs and activities launched this year will gain fruition without the usual lag resulting from graduation of fine leadership.

Ihave had the pleasure of learning to know personally some of the men of Eta Delta Fraternity and have been proud to have them within the College of Business. It is without hesitation that I recommend approval of their petition for affiliation with Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity.

Sincerely yours,

E. A. Roth, Dean College of Business

The Grand Council International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Campus Avenue Oxford, Ohio 45056

Dear Sirs:

I am very pleased that Eta Delta Business Fraternity at Eastern Michigan University is seeking affiliation with Delta Sigma Pi International Fraternity.

It has been evident for some time that there is a need for another business fraternity at Eastern Michigan. Alpha Kappa Psi, the only current business fraternity for men at EMU, is a highly competent organization. However, the quantity of highly qualified men seeking careers in business grows larger each year as our College of Business grows. Thus, there is a need for fraternal affiliation for these men, which I believe Delta Sigma Pi will effectively provide.

Eta Delta was granted organizational status on March 18, 1959, by the Student Senate, upon recommendation from the Co- Curricular Committee.

The membership of Eta Delta, which comprises 30 men, has a cumulative academic average of 2.74, and 2.72 for the 1968-59 Fall Semester, both of which are higher than the average for men students at Eastern Michigan.

Again, I wish to express my pleasure that the men of Eta Delta are seeking affiliation with the Delta Sigma Pi International Fraternity. I heartily endorse their request.

Gentlemen:

As chairman of the Department of General Business, I believe that a local chapter of Delta Sigma Pi will make a significant contri bution to the professional development of the students of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University.

A chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi has been active for several years, but I believe the current and projected enrollments in the College fully justify the formation of a second professional business fraternity.

As faculty advisor of Alpha Kappa Psi for several years, including the transition period from a local business fraternity to its affiliation with the National Chapter, I am cognizant of the need for and the problems of another fraternity. I believe that a second fraternity will be mutually beneficial to both groups, and I strongly endorse the formation of a local chapter of Delta Sigma Pi.

Sincerely yours, i^ (2^f-^^4^ &^^^^^^

The Grand Council International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Campus Avenue Oxford, Ohio 45056

Gentlemen:

May I add my support to the request of Eta Delta fraternity that they be given national affiliation with Delta Sigma Pi. Although it has not been my privilege to be closely associated with the members of Eta Delta thus far, I have been most favorably impressed in the con tacts which have been made, including their presentation to the College of Business Advisory Committee requesting recognition.

I think the College is large enough to support two business fraternities, and also believe some healthy competition will be good for both groups. I especially like the approach of Eta Delta in encouraging scholarship and believe this will foster professionalism in the fraternity.

It is hoped you will give favorable consideration to their petition.

Sincerely, ,

Gentlemen:

The members of Eta Delta professional business fraternity, Eastern Michigan University, are fine young men; worthy of recognition and acceptance into the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi. Having worked with them closely since their orientation meeting last November, I have been favorably impressed with their academic and leadership abilities, professional attitudes, sense of direction, and overall perspective.

This semester they have planned and are carrying out a program of pro fessional meetings, getting to know each other and working together toward common goals. They are a dependable, cohesive group, pre paring to meet the challenges of today's business world.

Because I am confident they will be an honor to the fraternity, the school, and themselves, I recommend acceptance of their petition for membership and chartering of the local chapter.

Sincerely yours,

Gentlemen:

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation on behalf, of Eta Delta Fraternity at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti.

In fact, I recently had the pleasure of meeting and talking with the 30 active members on a business subject and they are a fine group of young men with serious personal achievement goals. Many of them asked perceptive questions after my presentation.

It is my judgment and opinion that Eta Delta would make an excellent addition to the proud tradition and ranks of Delta Sigma Pi.

They appear to be a Fraternity of fine young men from our University who would be an asset to your organization. Their affiliation with you would also fit into the general trend of growth and excellence at Eastern Michigan University.

John D. Rentofn, President, JDR/st THE NATIONAK BANK OF YPSILANTI Eastern Michigan University History A History of Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University was founded by the State

Legislature in 1849 to educate teachers for public schools.

It was the first normal college west of Albany, New York.

In recent years Eastern has become a multi-purpose univer

sity with accredited and respected degrees in many areas

of the liberal arts, social and natural sciences, business,

and pre-professional programs.

Eastern also has the distinction of establishing

one of the first Student Union Buildings, McKenny Union,

which provides dining and recreational facilities for

students, faculty and staff, and guests. It also pro

vides meeting and conference rooms, food catering facil

ities, the bookstore, 12 bowling lanes, a billiard room,

and a ballroom.

On June 1, 1959, the college became Eastern Michigan

University, containing three colleges Arts and Sciences,

Education and the Graduate School. The College of Busi

ness was created in 1964 and is presently housed in Boone

Hall.

Enrollment at Eastern has increased from 3,400 students

in 1955 to 5,100 in 1960. The greatest student growth, however, has been from 5,900 in 1962 to its present 17,000, almost tripling its student body in seven years. Current Facts Current Facts About Eastern Michigan University

Eastern's 217-acre main campus bustles with nearly 17,000 students. Buildings needed to provide for this student body are transforming Eastern's campus. New construction, in ex cess of $16 million, is now underway. Included in this new construction are: 145 married student housing apartments, a six-story Physical Science building, and an athletic complex consisting of a 25,000 seat football stadium, track and field facilities, and a 2,500 seat baseball stadium. Also, the seven-story Pray-Harrold classroom building, which upon com pletion in June, 1969, will be the largest classroom building in the State of Michigan is capable of holding 5,000 students at one time. It will house the Departments of English Lan guage and Literature, History and Social Sciences and the

College of Business. Another complex of buildings are on the drawing boards, with the University's five-year plan for capital improvements reaching $30 million.

The estimate of enrollment for Eastern in 1970 is 20,000 students. The University's development plan is based on an anticipated enrollment of 26,000 by 1980, but this figure could be reached by the mid-1970s.

Profound changes are occurring simultaneously at EMU both the more obvious physical growth and the less obvious conversion from a teacher's college to a university, with all the enlargement in scope that this implies. Already in the ten years in which Eastern Michigan has been a university. more than 30 percent of EMU's students are in non-teaching curricula. This is reflected in new degrees being granted, the most recent of which is a bachelor's degree in fine arts, the seventh bachelor's degree offered. Other bachelor's degrees are in arts, science, art education, business educa tion, business administration, and music education. Master's degrees are offered in arts, science, and business administra tion.

Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Harold E. Sponberg, president of Eastern since July, 1965, Eastern has moved into a new era of excellence, in which the stated policy of the University is to make "E" stand at once for Eastern and for Excellence. The Campus The Water Tower

Located at the intersection of Cross Street and

Washtenaw Avenue, this tower has long been a landmark of

Ypsilanti and the EMU campus. It is still in use today as a reserve water supply for the city of Ypsilanti. The Administration Building

John D. Pierce Hall

This building houses all of the major administrative offices plus the Department of Education and general class room space. The bell tower chimes are heard throughout the campus and the conununity. strong Physical Science Building

This structure a has unique feature of being one of the most built economically facilities, per square foot, of any college building in the country. It houses the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Geography. Dining Commons

The center building houses the dining commons number 1 for 4 dormitories, Buell, Downing, Wise and Best Halls. Food services and off-campus housing and on-campus housing offices are located here also. fl^s*-'

Daniel L. Quirk Dramatic Arts Building

This building, dedicated in January, 1959, contains an instructional theater seating 381. It is also equipped with radio facilities, an outdoor amphitheater, and classrooms and offices housing dramatic and speech activities. The

University FM radio station, WHUR, has broadcast facilities in this building. Joseph E. Warner Physical Education Building

Dedicated on September 29, 1964, this physical education building houses a swimming pool of Olympic proportions, 3 large gymnasiums, locker facilities for 3,000 students, 4 general purpose classrooms, a lecture hall, 2 seminar rooms, and 3 handball courts. Many intra-fraternity basketball, handball, and water polo events are held here each semester. College of Business

Program College of Business

The of the origin College of Business at EMU may be

traced back to 1913 when life certificates in commerce were

awarded to teachers. In the 1929-30 academic year, two

distinct curricula began to emerge Business Administration

and Commercial Education. The Department of Business Educa

tion was formed in 1947-48 with majors first established in

accounting and secretarial studies. By 1950-51 two bachelor's

degrees were offered a Bachelor of Science Degree with

Teacher's Certificate and a Bachelor of Science Degree in

Business Administration. Majors in the Business Administra

tion curriculum were expanded in 1955 to encompass the areas of Accounting, Marketing, General Business, and Secretarial.

The department now became known as the Department of Business

Studies. In 1961-62 the department name was again changed to the Department of Business.

The College of Business was established in July, 1964, and has for its major responsibility the provision of educa tional programs of a professional nature for those persons who contemplate careers in business and public administration or as business teachers in our educational systems; the development of in-service professional training for those individuals presently employed in those fields; and the per formance of such related public service and research activities as required. To carry out its mission the college has established

both graduate and undergraduate curricula leading to the

bachelor of business administration and the bachelor of

business education degrees and the master of business admin

istration and the master of business education degrees respec

tively. The educational programs have been accredited by the

North Central Association of Colleges and Universities. The

college holds membership in the Assembly of the American

Association of Collegiate Schools of Business and in the

National Business Education Association.

The College of Business presently located in Boone Hall will be moved to the new seven-story Pray-Harrold classroom

building in summer of 1969. This move will increase our

present classroom facilities one and one-half times. Plans

are now underway for a separate College of Business building

in five years . Faculty School of Business

History HISTORY OF ETA DELTA FRATERNITY

On November 11, 1968, an informal information-orientation meeting was held in Starkweather Hall to determine whether or

not there was sufficient interest and enthusiasm among the students in the College of Business for organizing a profes sional business fraternity. Previously letters had been mailed

to selected would-be qualified members, and over fifty students

indicated their interest by their presence. At this meeting

the objectives of Delta Sigma Pi were discussed, a history of professional fraternities presented, and general topics dis cussed relating to the group. Out of this meeting almost all

of the students present signed up that they were interested

in pursuing organizing further, and a steering committee was

formed consisting of: William Duncan, Charles Gilmer, Gary

Hart, Joseph Honce, James Jeindl, Robert Knoke, Gregory Lockey,

Jeffrey Munroe, Artis Noel, Bradford Riedle, and Richard Weaver.

For the next three weeks the steering committee and

Professor Leland Brown (temporary advisor and member of Delta

Sigma Pi) met regularly to prepare by-laws and plans for

organizing a local business professional fraternity with the

possibility of applying for Delta Sigma Pi membership in the

Spring semester 1969.

The steering committee elected three temporary officers

officers were elected for the to serve until Spring semester:

1. Richard Weaver, President

2. Joseph Honce, Secretary

3. William Duncan, Treasurer Furthermore, the steering committee planned a series of three organizational meetings which were carried out. On December

11, 1968, presentation of fraternity objectives, officers* duties, and professional programs were discussed. By-laws were adopted at this meeting.

Initiation fees and dues were collected at the second general meeting, held Wednesday, January 8, 1969. Active mem bership in Eta Delta Fraternity became set at thirty. After wards, an open house was held by Professor Brown for all fraternity members. Mr. Tom Hall, District Director of Delta

Sigma Pi, and one of his fraternity brothers, Mr. Jurdzinski, also attended this social gathering.

At the third general meeting, held Wednesday, January 22,

1969, the following officers were elected for the Spring semester 1969:

President: William Duncan

Senior Vice-President : Richard Weaver

Vice-President: Jeffrey Munroe

Secretary : Joseph Honce

Treasurer : Robert Knoke

Historian: Thom Sharp

Chancellor : Gary Hart

Fraternity Advisor : Leland Brown

Subsequently, committees were appointed and began their duties.

Beginning in the Spring semester 1969, a program of professional meetings, informal social gatherings, and regular business meetings has been held. To date the program has consisted of two professional speakers, a fund-raising car wash, and a bowling party.

Of course, much time and effort have gone into preparing the petition for approval and in training preparatory for becoming charter members of Delta Sigma Pi in May, 1969. Steering Committee
