CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by University of Bolton Institutional Repository (UBIR) Numinous Connections: Poetry in the Hospice Philip Isherwood A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Bolton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2015 Numinous Connections - Poetry in the Hospice - Philip Isherwood A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Bolton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Philip Isherwood Numinous Connections: Poetry in the Hospice Abstract This thesis offers a distinctive approach to writing poetry which has been developed within the context of the author’s/researcher’s observations of, and participation in, end of life care. It will be argued that poetry can have a unique role in supporting patients within a hospice setting. It emerges that there may be a further role of the poem as ‘memorial art’. The practical base to the research has been writing poetry based on conversations with, and the creative artwork of, hospice patients throughout a period of over three years. These working methods have enabled the author to produce a substantial collection of poetry, presented at the start of the thesis, as the prime evidence of the value of the approach. In this research context the ‘numinous’ is interpreted from its extended definition as relating to transcendence, wonder and otherness. Particular components of the writing practice have formed a ‘numinous poetics’. The numinous as a focus in this research has emerged through careful and scholarly reading and reflection as part of the author’s response to the perceived qualities and value of the poems as they were written.

[Market Trends] Vol. 21 No. 6 June 2011 Candy Bars You Can Feel Good About By Kimberly J. Decker, Contributing Editor Paul Frantellizzi thinks we should all just give up the guilt and make like the ancients. The founder and CEO of Good Cacao, Boise, ID, notes the “many recent articles and studies now surfacing to confirm what the Mayan culture knew all along: Chocolate is good for you." To those of us who always considered a premium bar a bit of an over-the-counter “wonder drug, “this comes as little surprise. But to others— enamored of the notion that whatever tastes good must be bad for you—it flies in the face of conventional wisdom. But convention isn’t what it used to be, as more of us accept that a judiciously savored (and strategically formulated) candy bar need not oblige one to do penance. “The response we’ve gotten Candy a Top Impulse Buy at Checkout has been huge," Frantellizzi says of his company’s organic “functional" chocolates. According to the Hebrew calendar, the day begins at sunset, the week begins on Saturday night, and the new year is celebrated in the fall. • Cutting. We Started a Research Program to Investigate the Process of Curing Fish in Traditional Kilns
THE TORRY KILN ITS DESIGN AND APPLICATION WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE COLD SMOKING OF SALMON, HERRING, AND COD Alex M cK . Bannerman, M BE A. I. F . S. T. Independent Consultant Swanland, North Ferriby Yorkshire HU14 3QT En gland 44! 0482-633124 In 1933, I was privileged to join the Torry Research Station in Aberdeen, Scotland. I worked for the director, the late Dr. G. A. Reay, investigating fish proteins, freezing, cold storage, salting, and dehydration of herring and cod, and the analytical techniques to test these processes ~ In 1936 37, I became involved in smoke curing fish, working with Dr. Charles Cutting. We started a research program to investigate the process of curing fish in traditional kilns. Some of these kiln s were 800 ft square and 30 ft high. We measured air flow, temperatures, humidities, and weight loss of fish during smoking. From the data, we built a picture of the irregularities and disadvantages of smoking in these old kilns. However, this also led to improving the process. After several attempts, we developed a simple tunnel design in which fish could be smoked under controlled conditions. The process was more economical, faster, and the product more uniform. This is a bit of history, but it was from this work that we built our expertise and knowledge of fish. A previous speaker suggested that with modern, programmable smoking equipment it is only necessary to push buttons, and "witch doctors" are no longer needed. I would agr ee with this for products such as salami, sausages, and other products manufactured from uniform ingredients in skins of uniform length and thickness ~ However, fish come in all shapes and sizes, with differing fat, protein and water content.

  • Case with Questions J Cadbury 1
j Case with questions Cadbury 1 Cadbury is a very well known British confectionery company. Originally a family fi rm started by John Cadbury and grounded in Quaker values and ideals, it started life in 1824 as a shop selling chocolate as a virtuous alternative to alcohol. It went on to become a large-scale manufacturer of chocolate based at the now legendary Bournville factory, built in 1879, and its picturesque workers’ village with its red-brick terraces, cottages, duck ponds and wide open parks. Over the next 100 years Cadbury developed the products that have become so familiar: Dairy Milk in 1905, Milk Tray in 1915, Flake in 1920, Creme Egg in 1923, Roses in 1938 and more. From 1969 it traded as Cadbury Schweppes plc until, in 2008, it separated its global con- fectionery business (which retained the name ‘Cadbury’) from its US beverages business, which was renamed Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. Cadbury Schweppes had already sold off most of its beverages businesses in other countries around the world, a process started in 1999 and concluded in 2009 with the sale of its Australian beverages business. The reason for the exit from the beverages business was to enable Cadbury to focus more clearly on what it saw as its core strengths in confectionery, and better enhance shareholder value. Beverages had become the ‘poor sister’ in the relationship, with a separate management structure but delivering growth below the targets for the company. In 2008 the newly de-merged Cadbury set as its goal maintaining its market leadership position, and leveraging its scale and advantaged positions so as to maximise growth and returns.
