Dedication To Çréla Prabhupäda, who fulfilled Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s prediction that His holy names would be chanted in every town and village of the world. “I have tested it definitely that melodious vibration of saìkértana, if they are performed by serious devotees, can attract people from the very spiritual platform, and it at once makes the spiritual background very smooth, when a spiritual instruction from the Bhagavad-gétä can be implemented very nicely. So my first concrete program is . to organize such a saìkértana party.” [Çréla Prabhupäda letter to Harikrishnadas Aggarwal, 3 March 1968] Acknowledgements We thank all the devotees who over the years worked on this manual and helped bring it to its present form. It was Lokanätha Mahäräja and Païcaratna Prabhu who initially requested Indradyumna Mahäräja to write this manual as an offering to Çréla Prabhupäda in his Centennial year, 1996. Mukunda Mahäräja offered great support and encouragement for the project and wrote an excellent introduction. Guëagrähi Mahäräja offered suggestions and corrections to the original draft. Bhakta Ken White was the first editor. The late Viläsé Mätäjé also reviewed the text and made many critical comments and suggestions, as did Nåsiàha Kavaca Prabhu. Sundara-nanda Gopäl Prabhu and Braja Sevaké Mätäjé further refined the text with their editing skills. Kåñëa Kåpa Prabhu of the Bhaktivedanta Institute in Alachua added Sanskrit diacritics, as well as the recipes and play scripts in the appendices. i CONTENTS Dedication THE MEANING OF VYASA PUJA nama oà viñëu-pädäya kåñëa-preñöhäya bhü-tale çrémate Bhakti Caitanya-svämin iti nämine nama oà viñëu-pädäya kåñëa-preñöhäya bhü-tale çrémate Bhaktivedänta-svämin iti nämine namas te Särasvate deve gaura-väëé-pracäriëe nirviçeña-çünyavädi-päçcätya-deça-täriëe Hare Krsna ! Dear Godbrothers. Godsisters, friends and well-wishers We are assembled here to celebrate the Vyäsa-püjä ceremony of the appearance day of our beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Caitanya Swami Maharaja. Vyäsa-püjä is the day on which we glorify the bona fide spiritual master appearing in disciplic succession from Çréla Vyäsadeva. The disciplic succession is an unbroken chain through which Vedic knowledge is passed down from the spiritual master to the disciple. Lord Kåñëa first imparted the Vedic knowledge to Lord Brahma within his heart. Lord Brahma then spoke it to Närada muni, and Närada muni explained this spiritual science to Srila Vyäsadeva. Srila Vyäsadeva is known as the literary incarnation because he compiled the Vedas and put them into written language. The word püjä means "worship." So Srila Vyäsadeva is our äcärya, therefore we offer Vyäsa-püjä. On the appearance day of the guru we offer vyäsa-püjä. Actually, it is not directly Vyäsa, but because the bona fide guru represents Vyäsadeva, his püjä is also vyäsa-püjä. Nobody can understand Kåñëa without going through His most confidential servant. Therefore Caitanya Mahäprabhu says, “guru-kåñëa-prasade päya bhakti-latä-béja [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. That is the Vedic injunction. Tad viddhi praëipätena paripraçnena sevayä[Bg. 4.34]. Nobody can understand Kåñëa without going through His most confidential servant.

  • Free Write Journal #111
1 Free Write Journal #111 * * * Free Writes A Matter of Faith A devotee living in an East coast USA temple wrote to me. He’s observed that new devotees, after practicing for a year, do not consider getting initiated. He is initiated, and he suggests to them that they should try to decide who they could be initiated by. But he says that people are really sensitive about someone emphasizing—or “pushing” as they say. He writes that he understands a lot of the hesitations that are in their minds. Still, it is a very basic point in our philosophy that initiation is required. It is stressed that Srila Prabhupada is everyone’s guru, but that may give everyone the idea that taking initiation is not so urgent. I wrote back to him and said he was right in suggesting devotees take initiation. There are many qualified ISKCON gurus, and the devotees should get acquainted with them, hear their Zoom presentations and read their writings. It is not that one should go on indefinitely in an uninitiated state. That would be to follow the ritvik philosophy, which is rejected by ISKCON and the GBC. They should closely observe the various initiating gurus and try to correspond with one and tell him their situation. It is a kind of pride that prevents one from humbly approaching a spiritual master. It can be an excuse for not taking vows and following them. All the Gaudiya Vaisnava acaryas recommend the importance of taking initiation. The GBC states that Prabhupada is the preeminent siksa-guru for all disciples in ISKCON.
