2010 Event Report
2010 Event Report The best ‘Mallory’ yet! The stars, the participants and the weather all combined to give the record crowds a weekend to remember. The VMCC Festival of 1000 Bikes is now an accepted and an essential fixture on the motorcyclist’s calendar. We now talk of “Mallory” or “1000 Bikes” and every motorcyclist knows what you mean. This opportunity for the owners of both road and track machines to experience riding on a genuine race circuit at their own pace and in the company of like-minded enthusiasts is so attractive that the event was over-subscribed yet again. But it’s more than that. It is now one of those occasions where you are likely to meet everyone you ever knew in your world of motorcycling. Where you see the famous in informal and accessible situations and where you make new acquaintances, see unique and/or rare machines, where you learn more about motorcycle history and technology and where you are able to savour the sights, the sounds and the aromas of machines of a bygone age. Whilst the key attractions are out on the track, the exponents of Vintage Grass-track and the more relaxed devotees of the “Pre-1965 Trials” put on demonstrations of their activities in the out- field areas and the VMCC Sprint section staged dramatic demonstrations of their skills to a vast and appreciative crowd on the track at Sunday Lunch time. Sunday afternoon saw the ‘Past Masters’ led by Freddie Spencer on his Honda RS500 and Carl Fogarty MBE on his Ducati 996 showing us the skills, the style and the panache that made them so successful. -
2008 Event Report/Souvenirs
2008 Event Report/Souvenirs Music Festival goers have Glastonbury, Opera Buffs have Glyndebourne and Horse lovers have Badminton. Motorcyclists have Mallory Park. This is the ‘Glastonbury’ of the motorcycle. There was even a little bit of mud around on Friday! Thousands of enthusiasts descended on Mallory Park for the weekend of 11/12/13 July to see and hear the ‘stars’ perform. But unlike Glastonbury, many of the enthusiasts were performers in their own right having signed up for appearances on the 1.35 mile track on both the Saturday and Sunday. However the VMCC had its own musical element this year with the famous Ace Cafe providing their “Rock N Roll” stage in the big entertainment marquee which included DJs and live bands each night. Rain on Friday seemed reluctant to give way, but Saturday did dawn dry and it remained so throughout most the day for the continuous succession of road machine track sessions that saw almost 1000 machines on the track in the course of the track sessions for road machines. The superb sunny day on Sunday brought record crowds through the gates who witnessed another 1000 machines out for Track sessions for road and (mostly) racing machinery. Indeed, roads around Mallory came to a standstill as traffic queued for more than an hour to get into the public car park! If Saturday was members’ day, then Sunny Sunday was the day for the ‘stars’- both man and machine. The Past Masters demonstrated to us that they have lost none of their style and their élan. Some iconic machines from the past wafted stylishly around the circuit piloted by some iconic names including Phil Read, Mick Grant, Sammy Miller & Charlie Williams. -

Motorcycle Design Defining a New Typology and Form for the Electric Motorcycle of the 21St Century
International Hellenic University School of Economics, Business Administration and Legal Studies MSc in Strategic Product Design Dissertation Thesis 31/1/2017 Motorcycle Design Defining a new typology and form for the electric motorcycle of the 21st century. Maioglou Dimitrios Student Name: Dimitrios Maioglou SID: 1106140007 Supervisor: Prof. Georgios Liamadis I hereby declare that the work submitted is mine and that where I have made use of another’s work, I have attributed the source(s) according to the Regulations set in the Student’s Handbook. January 2017 Thessaloniki - Greece 1 Abstract The following paper is a Thesis, written for the MSc in Strategic Product Design. The purpose of this project is to research the engineering and design identity of the electric motorcycle of the 21st century. As part of the project, a research has been conducted, regarding the history of motorcycles and engineering that shaped their current visual form. Following, in this paper, there has been presented the current technology in electric motorcycles with production models and brands that are investing in electric vehicles. The main goal of this paper, is to present a design proposal for an electric motorcycle. Based on the engineering research on electric motors for electric vehicles, a reader will find a full description of the parts that assembly an electric motorcycle, the important points that need to be addressed while designing a concept for an electric motorcycle and the trade-offs that must be resolved regarding the geometry, ergonomics and performance. At the final chapters, our concept electric motorcycle takes form with sketches and different variations. -
2009 Event Report
2009 Event Report Thousands of enthusiasts descended on Mallory Park for the weekend of 10/11/12 July to witness what has become the best “live action” Classic Motorcycling event in the UK. Not only did this year’s sold out event attract the most Star riders of any event in Europe but the 1100 enthusiasts who rode in the “public” track sessions were stars in their own right having signed up for appearances on the 1.35 mile track on both the Saturday and Sunday. With the famous Ace Cafe providing their “Rock N Roll” stage in the big entertainment marquee which included DJs and live bands each night and a massive firework display provided by Norton it certainly made for a packed weekend. Saturday’s weather provided some showers with all but 5 of the 27 track sessions for road machines being dry & which saw almost 1000 machines on the track through the course of the day. Hosted by the Taverners Section of the VMCC Saturday also saw over 50 entrants in the pre-65 Trial that took place in the wooded area adjacent to Gerards Bend. The superb sunny day on Sunday brought record crowds through the gates who witnessed another 1000 machines out for the 23 Track sessions for racing machinery. Indeed, roads around Mallory came to a standstill as traffic queued for more than an hour to get into the public car park. The record crowds know that there is always so much happening on Sunday including 2 sessions of Sprinting on the circuit start/finish straight & a highly competitive Grass Track which saw over 30 entrants on both solos & outfits. -

Front Suspension
Front suspension The most common form of front suspension for a modern motorcycle is the telescopic fork. Other fork designs are girder forks, suspended on sprung parallel links (not common since the 1940s) and bottom leading link designs, not common since the 1960s. Vincent Black Lightning with Girdraulic front suspension Some manufacturers (e.g. Greeves) used a version of the swinging arm for front suspension on their motocross designs. A single-sided version of the idea is also used in motor scooters such as the Vespa. The Hub-center steering as developed by Ascanio Rodorigo, on a concept associated to Massimo Tamburini is a complex front swingarm alternative system that entails suspension and steering, as seen in projects such as Bimota Tesi and Vyrus motorcycles. Telescopic forks Scott produced a motorcycle with telescopic forks in 1908, [2][3] and would continue to use them until 1931. [4] In 1935 BMW became the first manufacturer to produce a motorcycle with hydraulically damped telescopic forks. [5] Most motorcycles today use telescopic forks for the front suspension. The forks can be most easily understood as simply large hydraulic shock absorbers with internal coil springs. They allow the front wheel to react to imperfections in the road while isolating the rest of the motorcycle from that motion. Telescopic forks on a 1969 BMW The top of the forks are connected to the motorcycle's frame in a triple tree clamp (known as a "yoke" in the UK), which allows the forks to be turned in order to steer the motorcycle. The bottom of the forks is connected to the front wheel's axle.
