Hashim2 1Environmental Research Center, University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq 2Applied Sciences Department, University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Indoor radon concentrations, the annual effective dose rate and the annual equivalent dose rate to the lung and to the public were measured in the dwellings of 10 neighborhoods located on the west side of the river Tigris (Al- Karkh) in Baghdad city using passive dosimeters. CR-39 solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) technique was used for radon measurements. Ninety-one dosimeters were distributed in the dwellings of the study area, three dosimeters were planted in three rooms of each house depending on the usage of the room (bedroom, living or sitting room and kitchen). They were left for a period of 3 months during winter time from November 2013 to February 2014. Radon concentrations were found to range from 64.9 Bq.m-3 to 94.7 Bq.m-3 in Daoudi and Hayy Al-Jamiaa, respectively, with a mean value of 79.82±1.05 Bq.m-3. The mean annual effective dose rate and the mean equivalent dose rate were found 2.00±0.04 mSv.y-1and 4.81±0.06 mSv.y-1. The dwellers of Hayy Al-Jamiaa were found to be exposed annually to the highest equivalent dose rate of 5.74 mSv.y-1. The sensing system is built on Atmega128 and CC2420 platform. We designed and implemented a sensor function for wireless sensor network application using special network named (WSN) for measuring environmental acoustic noise. Based on the readings obtained became clear that 90 % out of the locations during the peak time have equivalent sound level over 75 dBA, and 60 % out of the total number of locations measured display during the normal time equivalent sound level over 75 dBA. The field study of the research revealed two types of spaces: the built space which represents all the spaces of concrete, iron, or asphalt nature penetrating the city environment that exist in the city, and the green space represented by the areas of individual characteristics and need a sustainable care for representing a living organism with requirements that should be provided so that they take their space in the city. The research revealed a decline in the area of green zones which is caused by the annual increase of population size, the increase of demand over the residential supply and also the increase in the size of middle and small industries on the account of green lands. Also, the field study of the research showed that there are two functions controlling the use of green zones, one of them of closed nature that is only used by the concerned one, especially sports stadiums of all kinds and swimming pools, and the other of open nature distributed hierarchically according to the importance of the city and its population size, representing entertainment and recreational areas for all people.

    UNHCR ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES FOR ASSESSING THE INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION NEEDS OF IRAQI ASYLUM-SEEKERS United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Geneva April 2009 NOTE UNHCR Eligibility Guidelines are issued by the Office to assist decision-makers, including UNHCR staff, Governments and private practitioners, in assessing the international protection needs of asylum-seekers from a given country. They are authoritative legal interpretations of the refugee criteria in respect of specific groups on the basis of objectively assessed social, political, economic, security, human rights, and humanitarian conditions in the country of origin concerned. The pertinent protection needs are analyzed in detail and recommendations made as to how the applications in question should be decided upon in line with the relevant principles and criteria of refugee law as per, notably, the 1951 Convention and its 1967 Protocol, the UNHCR Statute and relevant regional instruments such as the Cartagena Declaration, the 1969 OAU Convention and the EU Asylum Directives. The recommendations may also touch upon, as relevant, complementary or subsidiary protection regimes. UNHCR issues its Eligibility Guidelines pursuant to its responsibility to promote the accurate interpretation and application of the above-mentioned refugee criteria as envisaged by Article 8 of its Statute, Article 35 of the 1951 Convention and Article II of its 1967 Protocol and based on the expertise it has developed over several years in eligibility and refugee status determination matters. It is expected that the positions and guidance contained in the Guidelines should be weighed heavily by the relevant decision-making authorities in reaching a decision on the asylum applications concerned.
