  • Film, Television and Video Productions Featuring Brass Bands
Film, Television and Video productions featuring brass bands Gavin Holman, October 2019 Over the years the brass bands in the UK, and elsewhere, have appeared numerous times on screen, whether in feature films or on television programmes. In most cases they are small appearances fulfilling the role of a “local” band in the background or supporting a musical event in the plot of the drama. At other times band have a more central role in the production, featuring in a documentary or being a major part of the activity (e.g. Brassed Off, or the few situation comedies with bands as their main topic). Bands have been used to provide music in various long-running television programmes, an example is the 40 or more appearances of Chalk Farm Salvation Army Band on the Christmas Blue Peter shows on BBC1. Bands have taken part in game shows, provided the backdrop for and focus of various commercial advertisements, played bands of the past in historical dramas, and more. This listing of 450 entries is a second attempt to document these appearances on the large and small screen – an original list had been part of the original Brass Band Bibliography in the IBEW, but was dropped in the early 2000s. Some overseas bands are included. Where the details of the broadcast can be determined (or remembered) these have been listed, but in some cases all that is known is that a particular band appeared on a certain show at some point in time - a little vague to say the least, but I hope that we can add detail in future as more information comes to light.

  • Via Email: 18 February 2009 Dear Mr Request for Information
Via email: 18 February 2009 Dear Mr Request for Information – RFI20080111 Thank you for your request of 22nd January 2009 under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 seeking the following information: Is it possible to tell me how much the BBC spends on entering external awards, for example the Sony Radio Academy awards, BAFTA Television awards, Online Journalism awards etc? Would you be able to break it down to radio, TV and online entries? By way of background, it may be helpful for me to provide some explanation of the way in which the BBC manages entry into external awards and how such expenditure is recorded. The BBC submits entries to a huge number of awards across multiple divisions. Entry into awards is coordinated differently within the BBC, depending on the awards in question and there is no general ledger code for this type of expenditure which means that we are unable to obtain a report on this category of expenditure from our central finance system. Entry into a number of identified “priority” awards is coordinated centrally by BBC Vision’s Awards Unit – this includes the BAFTA Television Awards, RTS Programme Awards and international events such as the International Emmys and the Banff World Television Festival. Where this is the case, information about the cost of entering these awards is centrally collated and readily accessible. Entry into a wide range of other awards is either partly or wholly managed locally by individual divisions. In this case cost information is not necessarily collated centrally by that team and is therefore not readily accessible.

In 2011 she was the online director for Series 3 of EastEnders: E20 (BBC3) and made behind-the-scenes content for the flagship drama. That same year she wrote and directed a new online drama series aimed at teenage fathers, Me and My Dad, for award-winning website YoungDads.TV and later directed a soap opera written by young people, Dead Ends, for Nick Hornby’s literacy charity Ministry of Stories. Charlotte has directed the Electronic Press Kit for many high-profile drama series. This included slotting into crews and creating original behind-the-scenes material, as well as both formal and on-set cast interviews. Charlotte also took part in the Channel 4/Directors UK scheme for women directors on Hollyoaks and then went on to direct 4 episodes, before taking time out earlier this year to have a baby. As a writer, Charlotte has a feature film in development, Bird, with Underground Films in Dublin, supported by the Irish Film Board, as well as a TV comedy with Urban Myth/Guilty Party, Invisible, along with other original projects. Charlotte excels in exploring difficult subject matters but with wit and warmth. Her aim is to write and direct high quality, entertaining fictionalised projects, which have the potential to introduce new audiences to characters and situations they might not otherwise encounter.

  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter.
