    AUSTRALASIAN HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY, 23, 2005 The Archaeology of Subsistence on the Maritime Frontier: Faunal Analysis of the Cheyne Beach Whaling Station 1845–1877 MARTIN GIBBS The mid-nineteenth-century shore-based whaling stations scattered along the western and southern Western Australian coasts were often at the extreme edge of the frontier of European settlement. This paper explores the archaeological evidence for food supply at the Cheyne Beach whaling station, northeast of Albany. It establishes that, despite the difficulties of supply, the occupants of the station retained a heavy reliance on sheep in preference to either salted meats or readily accessible native fauna. It is suggested that this may have been a result of dietary preference, but could also result from whaling requiring a state of constant preparedness that kept the workers in the immediate vicinity of the site and unable to undertake hunting or farming activities.     For Release 8 Feb 2017 The Perth Freight Link: Facts and Fiction Prepared by Peter Newman and Philip Jennings for The Beeliar Group – Professors for Environmental Responsibility The supporters of Roe 8 and the Perth Freight Link (PFL) have been spreading misinformation and half truths about the developments. Their aim is to discredit alternatives by the selective use of the facts. This analysis of the Roe 8 and PFL myths provides a more complete picture. Myth 1: The PFL has been on the books for 60 years and no one objected until recently. The PFL was a Prime Minister Abbott “Captain’s Call” presented to the former Transport Minister, Dean Nalder, at a meeting in Canberra in early 2015, along with similar highly controversial roads in Melbourne and Sydney. The Melbourne East-West Link was rejected by the Victorian people at their last election. It is extremely unusual to have a road project proposed by a Commonwealth politician and it has disrupted all planning processes since it was dropped on Perth without any history or warning. The PFL is still a vague proposal and the detailed design has never been released publicly or assessed by the EPA. Roe 8 was included in the Metropolitan Region Scheme in 1963 without any public consultation or environmental impact assessment as part of a ring road bringing traffic to the coast between North Coogee and South Beach and then north to Fremantle. The Cockburn Wetlands Study of 1975 first suggested that the road should not proceed. The first environmental assessment was carried out by the EPA in 1978 and it recommended in its System Six report in 1980 that a new route be found because the proposed route was environmentally unacceptable.

    Public Transport Authority Northern Suburbs Railway Alignment Butler to Yanchep Environmental Investigation November 2012 Executive summary The Public Transport Authority (PTA) is in the process of planning the early stages for an extension of the northern suburbs passenger railway from Romeo Road to Yanchep. The alignment extends from Romeo Road to the proposed Yanchep Railway station, a distance of 12.5 km, the rail reserve is 40 m wide, increasing at some station locations. The alignment covers approximately 50 ha. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) conducted both desktop and field surveys to identify and map the environmental values of the alignment. The desktop assessment identified any environmental constraints prior to the field survey in order to which may be in, or adjoining the study area. A desktop search upon indigenous heritage revealed no registered heritage sites within 200m of the study area. However, a search of surrounding Native Title Claims indicated that the site is located within the external extent of both the Single Noongar Claim (Area 1) and Swan River People. The PTA will therefore need to consult the Native Title Claimants prior to undertaking works. The registered National Parks of Neerabup National Park (1.4km east) and Yanchep National Park (500m east) are both within the local area, however, will be further separated from the rail extension by the proposed Mitchell freeway extension. Two isolated pockets of ASS risk have been identified in association with the nearby Pipidinny Swamp and Beonaddy Swamp. Pipidinny Swamp is the closest area with associated ASS, being approximately 1km east of the mid-section of the proposed railway.

They all copulated at least once. ” Richard Dawkins (b. 1941). 2 Summary The phenotype of any living organism reflects not only its genotype, but also direct effects of environmental conditions. Some manifestations of environmental effects may be non-adaptive, such as fluctuating asymmetry. Growing evidence nevertheless suggests that natural selection has fashioned norms of reaction such that organisms will tend to display developmental trajectories that maximise their fitness in the environment which they encounter via enhanced growth, survival, and/or reproduction. Over recent decades, the adaptive value of phenotypic plasticity has become a central theme in evolutionary biology. Plasticity may have evolutionary significance either by retarding evolution (by making selection on genetic variants less effective), or by enhancing evolution (as a precursor to adaptive genetic change). Reptiles are excellent models for the study of such theories, notably because they show high degrees of phenotypic plasticity. Many plastic responses have now been documented, using a diversity of taxa (turtles, crocodiles, snakes, lizards) and examining a number of different traits such as morphology, locomotor performance, and general behaviour. Islands are of special interest to ecologists and evolutionary biologists because of the rapid shifts possible in island taxa with small and discrete populations, living under conditions (and selective pressures) often very different from those experienced by their mainland conspecific.
