Just as Matisse created alongside Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Massine, and Muelle, there are numerous players that contributed to this thesis. First and foremost, I want to thank my thesis advisor Dr. Heidi Näsström Evans for her continual commitment to this project and her knowledgeable guidance from its conception to completion. Julia Burke, Textile Conservator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, was instrumental to gaining not only access to the costumes for observation and photography, but her energetic devotion and expertise in the subject of textiles within the realm of fine arts served as an immeasurable inspiration.

Liberty Pines Academy 10901 Russell Sampson Rd. Saint Johns, Fl 32259 Meet the Artist WHAT IS A Collage? Collage Collage came from the French word “ coller ”, which means “ to glue ”. A collage is an artwork made by gluing things together, such as: • String • Feathers • Fabric • Stones • Newspaper • and even Broken Bits of Toys. • Photos • Cardboard • Bits of paintings • Tissue or wrapping paper, • Shells Matisse had appendicitis when he was 21 years old. While sick in bed, his mother gave him a box of paints, brushes and a how-to-paint book. These art supplies made Matisse feel free and gave him a love for colors. A year later, much Henri Matisse against the wishes of his father, was also a Matisse quit law school to great French painter become a painter. 1869 to 1954 He also created many collages and sculptors and lead the modern art movement, which encouraged artists to use bold primary colors along with free, simple forms. The Open Window, Collioure, 1905 In 1905 Matisse and a group of artists exhibited their paintings using a new style. An art critic called this new style Fauvism, which means “WILD BEAST” in French, because the art was so wild and expressive with strange shapes and bright colors. Matisse lived in South France most of his adult life, and also traveled to Morocco and Tahiti. All those places provided inspiration for many of his pictures and collages. In Tahiti he was so overwhelmed by the colorful ocean, sea life, and colorful array of nature that he was unable to paint for a while, but could only look in amazement.

  • Matisse Cut-Outs Free
FREE MATISSE CUT-OUTS PDF Gilles Neret | 96 pages | 01 Jul 1999 | Taschen GmbH | 9783822886588 | English | Cologne, Germany Henri Matisse: Cut-Outs | The Art of Choosing As the artist entered his 70's Matisse Cut-outs health was starting to deteriorate. But rather than feel restricted, he adapted successfully and Matisse Cut-outs to make huge numbers of Matisse Cut-outs. The idea of creating genuine art from paper cut-outs was entirely new, and a technique that Matisse had invented himself. As he continued down this path he realised that it was actually just Matisse Cut-outs extension of his previous work, rather than an abrupt change in style. He had, for example, Matisse Cut-outs moving towards greater abstraction for a number Matisse Cut-outs years and this form of art provided him with the tools to simplify his work even more. In creating individual objects for each "painting", Matisse could change the arrangements as necessary without having to redraw anything. He found this to be a very flexible way of working. The large photograph found here is of Icarus, one of Matisse's most famous cut-out artworks. One can quickly see the various elements of the scene, with each one having been individually cut from paper. The artist is likely to have moved the figure around the scene several times before deciding upon the composition that we find here. An additional advantage Matisse Cut-outs this approach was the uniformity of colour. He could have single shades covering whole Matisse Cut-outs, perfect colours if you will, chosen for their high Matisse Cut-outs of luminosity.

Now, with the unprecedented cooperation of museums in Russia, Western Europe, and the United States, and through the generosity of many international lenders, we have an extraordinary opportunity to see his best-known works as well as those less familiar or rarely exhibited.

Much of the material here was found at the Baltimore Museum of Art website (www.artmba.org)’ the Metropolitan Museum of Art (www.metmuseum.org) and the National Gallery of Art (www.nga.gov) Bonjour, class! I am (name) and I am here for Art in the Classroom today. Bonjour means “Hello” in French. The artist we are going to talk about today is French, but before we talk about him, can anyone tell me briefly what you remember from the last visit (try to limit to 2-3 minutes)? Before we talk about today’s artist let’s remember the tools that every artist uses when creating his or her work. These are called the Elements of Art. (Elements of Art slide – line, shape, color, light, shape, texture and space) Slide 1 Let’s look at a painting by today’s artist Henri Matisse: Slide 2 Please take a moment to look at this painting and tell me what you see. Boats, sails, masts, sea, water, sky, potted plants, window, vine, leaves, balcony, walls. How did Matisse use color in this painting? Bold color; purple, violets, green, orange. Blocks of color on the interior of the room, short wavy lines of color outside the window. Would you see water this color in nature? Would you see sky this color in nature? Do you think that the walls really were painted those colors? Does this look like a photograph? No, it is Matisse’s idea of the view.
