Sir Arthur Conan Doyle : Sir Nigel before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Sir Nigel:

Why does one Kindle edition of this book cost $11.26 (virtually the same price as the paperback), while this one - which is annotated, presumably making it the better choice - is 99 cents? And why no indication on the page for the $11.26 version that there is a cheaper option? Lesson for the day, boys and girls: If the version you're looking to buy seems a bit dear, don't assume that there aren't other choices, just because there is no "other editions" button to click on.Anyway, to the book at hand: If you, like most people (sadly), are unaware that Conan Doyle's oeuvre is not limited to the stories, google his bibliography sometime. His prolificacy is as impressive as his versatility -- 22 novels and hundreds of shorter works of fantasy and science fiction, romances, historical novels, and non-fiction, not to mention a dozen or so plays, and several poetry collections. Sir Nigel and White Company (its prequel) are, in my humble opinion, his best in the historical novel category. Both are rollicking good tales, and they will teach you something about the Hundred Years War, which most folks slept through during their high school history class, if it was covered at all. John Wayne loved these books, according to his biographer -- pretty much the only thing I have in common with the Duke. Highly recommended.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sir Nigel Loring Before The White CompanyBy Bob JacksonSir Nigel is a prequel to , providing the early history of Sir Nigel Loring and Samkin Aylward who are principal characters (but not the main character) in the earlier book. To have a full understanding and get full enjoyment from Sir Nigel, one certainly should read it after having read The White Company, not before. I gave The White Company 5 stars; and Sir Nigel is not as good; so, I give it only 4 stars. My main dissatisfaction with Sir Nigel is that Conan Doyle belabors the details in a few chapters, and I would have been happier if those chapters had ended more quickly. However, the details in many chapters are outstanding. Particularly the early chapter describing how Nigel Loring came to own and successfully ride his great war horse Pommers is outstanding. I felt like a few of the details in Sir Nigel might not be entirely consistent with details describe in The White Company, and I may have to re-read the earlier book to confirm or correct my thinking. Not an unpleasant undertaking to anticipate.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Doyle's DaydreamsBy Daniel DeGennaroThe biggest hurdle is understanding the language. The story itself is consistent with Doyle's view of the world. He was a man of his times, somewhat nostalgic for the age of , when warfare was seen by him as glorious and masculine. I find the story overall to be uncomplicated and cartoonish. Not one of Doyle's better efforts by any stretch of my imagination. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish physician and writer known around the world for his stories about detective Sherlock Holmes, which all but created the literary field of crime fiction and made the name Sherlock Holmes synonymous with detectives. Aside from the Sherlock Holmes stories, he was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction.
