Roald Dahl Day Each year, the life and works of Roald Dahl are celebrated in schools across the country on his birthday, 13th September. As this falls so early in the academic year, we wanted to give parents plenty of notice that we will be inviting children to come as their favourite Roald Dahl character on this day. Please get your swizzfiddling thinking hats on and start planning the most whizzpopping outfit for your child to wear on Friday 13th September! Big Book Boost The Book People will be launching their Big Book Boost this September. Every time a parent, friend or even ex- pupil of our school places an order over £10 with The Book People, a further £1 is donated to school for us to spend on books. We shall let you know more about this great fundraiser for school books in September. Y4 swimming Y4RL will be the first class to begin their 12-week swimming block this September. The first swimming session will take place on Friday 6th September during the afternoon. On the first day back, children in Y4RL will receive a letter containing important information about the timings for the afternoon and what they need to bring to each lesson. If you are thinking of purchasing swimming attire over the summer, girls are required to wear a one-piece swimming costume and boys will need swimming shorts or trunks, which must be shorter than knee length. If you have any queries then please do not hesitate to contact Miss Laycock. The Hub Food Bank The Hub Food Bank are now in their 6th year of supporting families in our community. They have asked us to share the following information with our families: 'With the long school holiday nearly upon us we would like to remind you that we are able to help during this holiday if parents are struggling to find meals for children who would normally have a meal at school.' The Hub are clearly a great service and are happy to help. Please do drop in at 512 Manchester Rd, Stocksbridge, Sheffield S36 2DU. Their phone number is: 0114 288 5315. And finally... As the end of the academic year comes to an end, it is an opportunity to reflect on yet another incredible year at Stocksbridge Junior School. We would like to thank every member of our magnificent staff for their determination to make a difference each and every day, to our superb team of governors for working tirelessly in the background to ensure we strive towards our aims, to our wonderfully supportive parents for working alongside us to ensure our children get the best education possible and, most importantly, to our children for making every day count through their love of learning and desire to grow and develop into the most wonderful young people. • West Ecclesfield Ward Priorities 2014-15
West Ecclesfield Ward Priorities 2014/15 Ward Description The West Ecclesfield Ward includes the neighbourhoods of Grenoside, Burncross and High Green and has a population of 17,699. The ward has a proportionately high young population (17%) and a large older population (21%). The 2011 Census indicates that 4% of West Ecclesfield Ward is BME, lower than the city average. High Green neighbourhood is the most deprived in the ward, with around 16% of people living in areas amongst the most deprived 10% in England. High Green, Burncross and Grenoside used to be villages in their own right and retain many of their distinctive features setting them apart from the urban area of north east Sheffield. Residents have good access to open fields and countryside including at Greno Woods in the west of the ward. The A61 Penistone Road, a key transport link to the M1 and major trans- pennine routes, runs through Grenoside. The established and stable Burncross population lives predominantly in owner occupied private houses. Grenoside has a mix of housing types and tenures, including post war social housing and new developments and old, stone-built cottages from the original village. There is a strong sense of identity in the neighbourhood with active community groups and organisations. High Green is Sheffield's most northerly suburban neighbourhood. New developments blur its boundary with Chapeltown. However a third of residents live in social housing; at the heart of the area is a large council estate surrounded by private housing. Part of High Green falls within the top 10% most deprived areas in the country and has been the focus of health and community development activity.
