    1 The Jungle Book Scene 1: Mowgli’s Found in the Jungle Basu: Many strange legends are told of these jungles of India. But none as strange as the story of a small boy named Mowgli. It all began when the silence of the jungle was broken by an unfamiliar sound. (O.S. Baby is crying) It was a sound like one never heard before in this part of the jungle. Bagheera: (enters on stage) It’s a man-cub! Basu: Had Bagheera known how deeply he would be involved with Mowgli, he might have obeyed his first impulse to walk away. But Bagheera knew this man-cub would need nourishment, and soon. It would take many days to travel to the nearest man-village, and without a mother's care, well, he would soon perish. Then it occurred to him. (Bagheera grabs the basket by his mouth and starts walking to the corner to the wolves’ family den. Bagheera places basket by cave and nudges basket, creating a cry from Mowgli. Bagheera hides on the side of the stage watching the interaction of Mother Raksha and 4 wolf cubs coming to see what the noise was) Basu: Bagheera knew a family of wolves that had been blessed with a litter of cubs, and he believed there'd be no problem with the mother, Raksha, accepting this man-cub into the family thanks to maternal instinct. But he wasn’t so sure about Rama, the father. [Rama comes from side stage, looks at the man-cub and smiling face of Raksha, looks at cute Mowgli again and smiles too.] Basu: Ten times the rains have come and gone.

    Plackis 1 Elena Plackis Professor Hearne English 4995 May 2015 The Imitation Phenomenon By emphasizing the societal components of law, language, and conformity in The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling analyzes the condition of mankind internally and externally. The internal condition explores the progress of man evolutionarily while the external investigates man in relation to other men. One moment in particular that exemplifies the convergence of these motifs is the point at which the wolf pack ostracizes the feral child, Mowgli. Despite Mowgli’s conformity to the wolves in law and language, the lawless animals reject him from their pack: “‘No man's cub can run with the people of the jungle!’ roared Shere Khan. ‘Give him to me.’ ’He is our brother in all but blood,’ Akela went on; ‘and ye would kill him here. In truth, I have lived too long. Some of ye are eaters of cattle, and of others I have heard that, under Shere Khan's teaching, ye go by dark night and snatch children from the villager's doorstep. Therefore I know ye to be cowards, and it is to cowards I speak. It is certain that I must die, and my life is of no worth, or I would offer that in the man-cub's place. But for the sake of the Honor of the Pack,— a little matter that, by being without a leader, ye have forgotten,— I promise that if ye let the man-cub go to his own place, I will not, when my time comes to die, bare one tooth against ye.

    Plot Summary-Jungle Book Deep in the heart of the jungle, Mowgli the man cub is raised by wolves (Jungle prologue). When Shere Kahn the tiger decides that Mowgli is no longer welcome in the jungle, Bagheera the panther plans to guide him to the man village. Mowgli refuses to leave his home so they settle down for the night under a coconut tree. Their peaceful night is interrupted (Kaa the snake) when Kaa the snake lulls Mowgli into a deep sleep (Trust in me.)Bagheera chases of the snake (Night into Day) just in time for an elephant stampede (Colonel Hathi’s March). As the elephants march off, Bagheera commands Mowgli to follow him without any more argument. Mowgli sulks by a big rock (Baloo the bear), Only to discover that the rock is actually Baloo the bear (The Bare Necessities) during the song Mowgli is kidnapped by monkeys (Bare Necessities-Reprise) and taken to their leader, King Louie, who wants to learn how to be a man (I wan’na be like you). Bagheera rescues Mowgli while the disguised Baloo distracts King Louie (I wan’na be like you-Reprise). When the monkeys try to follow, Shere khan scares them away (Shere Khan the tiger). Baloo realizes that the jungle is not a safe place for Mowgli, who overhears him and runs away, dejected (Mowgli Runs). Mowgli’s jungle friends promise to protect him (That’s what friends are for), but Shere Kahn finds him anyway. Baloo, Mowgli and the Jungle work together to tie up the tiger (The Battle).

Specially adapted from the classic Disney animated film, Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS features a host of colorful characters and your favorite songs from the movie. Banished by the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan, a human boy named Mowgli and his panther friend, Bagheera, are on the run in the deepest parts of the jungle. On their journey, the two meet a sinister snake named Kaa, a herd of elephants and a giant bear named Baloo, who teaches them the swingin' musical rhythms of the jungle. After surviving a dangerous encounter with a band of monkeys led by King Louie, Mowgli and Bagheera are forced to run for their lives. When Shere Khan returns, our heroes must rally their fellow animals into battle and restore peace throughout the jungle. Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS has a large, expandable ensemble and many strong, featured roles for good singers. Several roles, including Baloo and King Louie, are great for kids with strong comedic skills. The chorus can be expanded to include various animals, trees, plants, rocks and many other jungle inhabitants.   • Jungle Book Script and Masks
    Make a Play Day Script Adapted by Stephen Richards © Splats Entertainment 2010 1 Masks Making o Print out the number of mask templates you need (see scenery and prop instructions). If in doubt please check with the splats teacher. o Glue the templates to thin card- although they also work as just paper. o The pupils can colour in or paint the masks as they wish. The panther should be black but you can highlight the designs of eyebrows. King Louis should be as wild as you wish. Orange hair and beard is probably a good idea but have fun with him! Again with the monkeys they don’t all have to be brown. o Cut out your mask with scissors. Cut each eyehole out with a craft knife (adults only). o Attach the masks with a paper band (as illustrated.) This is the easiest way for the pupils to get the masks on and off as they often play several characters. You can also use elastic or string but may be not as practical for the show o The Snake mask has a tongue that should be concertinaed up and attached to the mask. o On the Tiger, Wolf and Panther masks you can give a 3d effect by cutting along the blue lines as illustrated o King Louis is a two-part mask so you need to attach the beard leaving room for the mouth so pupil can speak easily. Adjust the bottom part to fit pupil.
