Submitted in full requirement for the degree of Master of Arts (Research) Division of Research & Commercialisation Queensland University of Technology 2014 Keywords Anglo-Boer War, Boer, Brisbane Courier, Dawson, Dickson, Kitchener, Kruger, Orange Free State, Philp, Queensland, Queenslander, Transvaal, War. ii Abstract This thesis examines the myth that Queensland was the first colonial government to offer troops to support England in the fight against the Boers in the Transvaal and Orange Free State in 1899. The offer was unconstitutional because on 10 July 1899, the Premier made it in response to a request from the Commandant and senior officers of the Queensland Defence Force that ‘in the event of war breaking out in South Africa the Colony of Queensland could send a contingent of troops and a machine gun’. War was not declared until 10 October 1899. Under Westminster government conventions, the Commandant’s request for military intervention in an overseas war should have been discussed by the elected legislators in the House. However, Parliament had gone into recess on 24 June following the Federation debate. During the critical 10-week period, the politicians were in their electorates preparing for the Federation Referendum on 2 September 1899, after which Parliament would resume. -

How Activism during the Vietnam Era Influenced Change in the Student Role on Campus Camas ChapmanGraves The University in Peace and War: HC 421 Professor Suzanne Clark March 13, 2005 ChapmanGraves 2 In describing United States student activists of the 1990’s, Kate Zernike says they are “a very different pack of protesters from the long-haired, antiestablishment dissenters of the past”.1 This seems to be a common attitude toward the student protesters of the 1960’s. The reality of 1960’s protests was not however what many may have imagined. While protests of the sixties may have included token hippies and a few violent dissenters, student protesters were not antiestablishment. On many campuses they even had their own form of establishment, and many members of this establishment would go on to play an important role in the United States government. At the University of Oregon, the student protest movement and its leaders became an integral part of student government. Not only was student government involved in protests, but the official actions taken by the University of Oregon student government, the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO), during this time reflect the attitudes of the student protesters. Students of the sixties wanted control over myriad aspects of their lives, and used the establishment of student government to fight for this control. This was clearly seen through specific actions taken by student government in the late 1960’s in an attempt to gain control over their education. At the University of Oregon, student government and student protest went hand in hand. -

(Oxford, England; Santa Barbara, California; Denver, Colorado) Abstract: Antigua and Barbuda, two islands of Leeward Island group in the eastern Caribbean, together make up a single independent state. The union is an uneasy one, for their relationship has always been ambiguous and their differences in history and economy greater than their similarities. Barbuda was forced unwillingly into the union and it is fair to say that Barbudan fears of subordination and exploitation under an Antiguan central government have been realized. Barbuda is a flat, dry limestone island. Its economy was never dominated by plantation agriculture. Instead, its inhabitants raised food and livestock for their own use and for provisioning the Antigua plantations of the island's lessees, the Codrington family. After the end of slavery, Barbudans resisted attempts to introduce commercial agriculture and stock-rearing on the island. They maintained a subsistence and small cash economy based on shifting cultivation, fishing, livestock, and charcoal-making, and carried it out under a commons system that gave equal rights to land to all Barbudans. Antigua, by contrast, was dominated by a sugar plantation economy that persisted after slave emancipation into the twentieth century. Its economy and goals are now shaped by the kind of high-impact tourism development that includes gambling casinos and luxury hotels. The Antiguan government values Barbuda primarily for its sparsely populated lands and comparatively empty beaches. This bibliography is the only comprehensive reference book available for locating information about Antigua and Barbuda. -

Greig Crysler Professor Richard Walker Summer 2015 Sagan Copyright page Sagan Abstract Specters of '68: Protest, Policing, and Urban Space by Hans Nicholas Sagan Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture University of California, Berkeley Professor Galen Cranz, Chair Political protest is an increasingly frequent occurrence in urban public space. During times of protest, the use of urban space transforms according to special regulatory circumstances and dictates. The reorganization of economic relationships under neoliberalism carries with it changes in the regulation of urban space. Environmental design is part of the toolkit of protest control. Existing literature on the interrelation of protest, policing, and urban space can be broken down into four general categories: radical politics, criminological, technocratic, and technical- professional. Each of these bodies of literature problematizes core ideas of crowds, space, and protest differently. This leads to entirely different philosophical and methodological approaches to protests from different parties and agencies. This paper approaches protest, policing, and urban space using a critical-theoretical methodology coupled with person-environment relations methods. This paper examines political protest at American Presidential National Conventions. Using genealogical-historical analysis and discourse analysis, this paper examines two historical protest event-sites to develop baselines for comparison: Chicago 1968 and Dallas 1984. Trials H 2228 BACKGROUND: The free-floating subdivision BTrials, litigation, etc. is used under names of individual persons, families, corporate bodies, or jurisdictions for the proceedings of civil or criminal actions to which they are parties, or for works about such proceedings, as described below. As a general rule, the same practices are followed in assigning subject headings to the actual proceedings of a trial as to works about a trial. In this second and revised edition General Sherrill has written the entire Introduction and First Generation which are signed with his name. The editor assumes the usual responsibility for the remainder of the book and hopes that it will be acceptable to the Sherrills and to his fellow genealogists. The arrangement of material is the one generally found in modem genealogies. Each head of a family is given a number, in a sequence beginning with the first settler who is No. 1. By looking ahead to the given number the succeeding generation will 4 be found. The superior or raised numbers ( as Jonathan ) indicate the degree of descent from the founder of the family in America. The usual abbreviations are used.
