The marketing of the event was done through Digicel text messages, Nauru television, radio and by word of mouth. The veg- etable and egg charity sale event has become very popular over the year and is attracting expatriates, refugees and fly in and fly out workers in addition to Nauru locals. The popularity of the event can be seen by the long queues before every event.

On this day the more people than ever lined up and waited patiently to purchase the inex- pensive and good quality fresh fruits, vegeta- bles and eggs produced on the different agri- cultural farms supported by TTM. Due to recent good harvest there were plen- ty of items and almost everyone ended up buying something. During the school break, TTM will hold more charity sales. In celebration of the Angam Day, the Nauru government organized a one- day carnival at Linkbelt Oval. Many stalls were set up around the sport field. There were foods, drinks, souvenirs, face painting etc. The TTM also had a stall selling vegetables and eggs.

As per previous sale, many people queued in front of the stall hoping to buy the fresh and locally grown vegetables and eggs. All the items were sold out very quickly raising a total of AUD1583.50.

H.E. Ambassador Joseph Chow donated the income from the charity sale to Nauru Disabled Peoples’ Association repre- sentative Ms. Miniva Dapanue. President Waqa also thanked Ambassador Chow for the kind donation and their participation in the various events to make Angam Day 2017 Carnival a memorable day.

Taiwan Embassy Staff Joins Traditional Ball Game

The Republic of Nauru marks 50th anniversary of Independence on 31st Jan- uary 2018. To celebrate the event, Nauru government has been holding a number of events leading up to that date from July 2017.

In celebration of the auspicious event with Nauru people, Taiwan Embassy formed a special team comprising of embassy staff to compete in the tradi- tional ball game (Itsibweb) at the Linkbelt Oval Carnival on Angam Day The Taiwan Itsibweb team giving a 2017. Even though in the end the Taiwan team didn’t win the game, it was a glorious defeat for the team as they put on their best fight.

To sponsor Nauru 50th Independence Day activities, the Taiwan Embassy donated AUD 1150 towards prize money presented by H.E. Ambassador Joseph Chow to the first and second team representatives amount of AUD 750 and AUD 400 respectively.

The Taiwan cultural troupe is invited by Nauru government to perform on 28 January to 4 February as part of Nauru 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

The Taiwan Acrobatic Troupe from National Taiwan College of Performing Arts, is currently the only official performing group of acrobatic art and stunt in Taiwan.

The troupe comprises a number of young artists who have been receiving stringent training for more than eight years. They are proficient and skillful in a spectrum of acrobatic techniques and assemblies. Their performanc- es are loaded with grace and enjoyed by people of all ages. Since the troupe’s inception, all members have been dedicated to the pursuit and expansion of traditional culture, as well as promoting the ethnic and grass- root art values.

The troupe members have performed extensively at home and overseas. Their performances have earned ex- cellence reviews worldwide and they are effectively promoting folk art and cultural exchange around the globe. Page 4 World Diabetes Day Speech by Dr. Kwok Ching-fai & Zhuang Yu-ren

The 14th of November is the World Diabetes Day. In order to raise the public's awareness and vigilance on diabetes, Dr. Kwok Ching-fai, a dia- betes specialist from Taiwan, and Zhuang Yu-ren, a nutritionist in the Tai- wan Technical Mission spoke to the about pre- vention and management of diabetes. The lecture was held in the library of the school.

Dr. Kwok’s topic was "Prevention of Diabetes," while Zhuang’s was "Nutritional Therapy for ." These two lectures were aimed at ad- dressing the long-term health impacts of diabetes on individuals as one of the most serious non- communicable disease affecting Nauru population. The students were provided with practical and useful information to help them understand and practice the principle of “prevention is better than treatment”.

More than 20 students, teach- ers including the Principal at- tended the lecture. Three staffs from the Republic of Nauru Public Health Center, includ- ing Director Dr. James Auto, Senior Nurse Rina Hartman and Manager NCD Don Kadir also presented at the event. Dr. Auto praised this meeting as H.E. Welcome Dr. Ho, Tzung Yo

A new Taiwanese medical expert specializing in kidney diseases Dr. Ho, Tzung Yo joined the Nauru Ministry of Health on 1 January 2018. He is from the Department of Nephrology of Kaohsiung Veterans Gen- eral Hospital in Taiwan and will stay in Nauru until 31 March 2018. Everyone is encouraged to seek appointment with Dr. Ho through the diabetes clinic at RON public health and hospital services. Page 5 A Donation to Tuvalu Overseas Community in Nauru

H.E. Ambassador Joseph Chow and the Embassy staff had the pleas- ure of attending the Christmas dinner organized by the Tuvalu over- seas community on 11 December 2017 at Deneng District. On this occasion H.E. Ambassador Chow donated a total of AUD 5,000, on behalf of the Taiwanese government, to the Tuvalu Over- seas Community in Nauru for repairing their community hall.

H.E. Ambassador Chow said that Taiwan and Tuvalu are brotherhood countries and continue to enjoy a very close relationship for a long time. It is our honor to share what we have with our good friends and we are looking forward to seeing a new Tuvalu Community Hall soon. Moreover, 300 eggs and 10 boxes of mineral water were also donated on the day for the dinner party.

The donations were accepted with great appreciation by Ms. Vae Kepae, the President of the Tuvalu Overseas Community in Nauru. She thanked the Taiwanese government for their financial support for renovating the community hall that plays an important role in the life of the Tuvalu people living and working in Nauru.
